Just found this rad thread, I've played all the video games but know nothing about the tabletop so this is really cool.

I'm surprised the cicada has a PPC, that seems like crazy firepower for the size. Then again the original mechcommander had a firestarter variant with a PPC.

Not much to add, cool thread!

The puma/adder also has dual ppc's, seems mw3 was correct

But then I remember the cougar is meant to be a heavier, more powerful derivative and yet it's only got large lasers?

How does the infantry work in this situation? Are they basically a small laser with zero armour or do they have some meaningful combat value?

Can infantry ambush from cover at all somehow?

As someone who’s first experience with BT was the 2018 computer game, my opinion on light mechs was largely formed from that game’s version of the rules. Which Led me to believe that the runs hot and hits hard breed of light mech (Jenner and Javelin mostly) and the “has one gun well above it’s weight class” breed of light mech (Urbanmech, Panther) we’re pretty good. The rest (Locust, Commando, and Spider) might have been very fast, but their anemic armor and weapons meant one good punch was an instant subsystem loss and they were usually incapable of serious damage.

This is mostly due to the game tying difficulty directly to tonnage, and the way that evasion pips work

So far this match is convincing me that they are much better in the tabletop game.

This is an irritating thing that basically all of the games do, only mech commander 1 bucked the trend as far as I know, you could only field a fleet of mostly heavy and assault mechs in the last few missions.

Alternatively, already armed missiles vomiting out of an lrm20 and showering the launcher with fire and shrapnel

When it reaches melee range, it doesn't punch its enemies. It just reaches out and... strokes them. Very gently.

Highly disturbing :catstare:

But even better is when your elevation is 1 above your target and you get to KICK on the punch table. A 60 ton 'mech will one-shot anything it kicks in the head, a 50 ton 'mech will force a crit roll.
Bonus points if you're attacking from behind for a 50% chance of hitting a rear torso and getting to crit roll on that.

I asked because mech commander 1 is my all time favorite giant robot game. Following a davion guard unit from the initial landings, through the inevitably atrocity-packed cities, all the way to the desperate last stand for the space port would be some good stuff in book form

The expansion with the deranged jaguar colonel trying to score some star league nukes would also be rad

As a fellow watcher, to me it seems the galleon and infantry are virtually no threat, whereas unloading everything on the rear of the stinger could potentially lead to a lucky shot that cripples it or forces the pilot to eject leading to more of that sweet sweet salvage with no downside I can see.

Do the AC numbers correspond to anything real like caliber or are they totally abstract? Iirc the lasers are sized by beam diameter (ML is 50cm...?), in my mind I picture ac2 being 20mm, ac5 being 50 etc and this seems like it would line up well with their actual capability ie an ac20 is basically a short barrel howitzer, ac2 is an AA gun and so on

This breaks down somewhat when you get to LBX though

The numbers corroborate to how many 16th of a ton of standard armor they can destroy in a single volley

Slavvy
Dec 11, 2012

I suppose it's no more or less abstract than having 'small' and 'medium' lasers

Irl these things usually have a functional, tactical difference rather than being broken down by size which I guess they AC's kind of do, if the ac5's tactical role consists of being mostly useless

I mean. The stock Leopard, which we have already made fun of for being small and wimpy for the given role of "Mech Transport" is armed with 2 PPCs, 3 LRM 20s, 7 Medium Lasers, and 5 Large Lasers

That is on the low end of what Drop Ships can be armed with, especially considering the Leopard is a little more than half the tonnage of the Union.

I kind of like capping off a mission of MW5 by just leading the enemy to my Leopard and letting it rip them to shreds with missiles.

Yeah me too, I am also definitely doing this for fun and not out of desperate necessity
