Haunted High Rise would have also featured the Hex Girls, who first showed up in Scooby-Doo! and the Witch's Ghost and became a cult favorite

My son had a BIG TIME Scooby Phase and I assure you the Hex Girls own and Witch's Ghost is a banger (for Scooby Doo...which means it's often barely tolerable but somehow gets by on charm and wholesomeness).

Yeah. I mean Hellboy isn't boring to me but his whole shtick is that he's nonplussed and competent, so it's low energy by design. Gotta bring in characters to shake it up.

The way the comic is structured, it honestly shouldn't be a movie.

How the gently caress is this even possible? The CGI in that movie looks like utter GARBAGE. Is Hollywood just a massive embezzlement scam now? How can more and more money be spent on movies that keep looking worse and worse?

Well I have a theory just based on some observations and conversations with people who did this work:

The VFX industry is horrible to work in now (it was always "bad" but you got paid a lot and could take big chunks of time off occasionally) but now there's garbage pay, unreasonable deadlines, and poo poo working conditions.

So what happens is that these companies can charge a lot and then use their bumper crop of new VFX employees to do the work badly. Then most of their employees quit. Hire new employees, churn 'em and burn 'em because it's a cool job and people want to do it. Disney has nobody else to work with because they dug their own grave with their working conditions and demands - only the desperate or amoral bid for them now. (or if they use a big effect house, the senior employees are not as subject to this treatement)

I know 3 VFX people who have all left the industry in the past 5 years. Two of them were around 20 year vets. All of them are a lot happier and healthier now.

It's why movies from 2013 had better VFX than now. The people doing them were actually better artistically. The computers and tools may have improved but the actual hands guiding them are substantially worse or just not given enough time to excel.

This is a phenomenon in a lot of industries, it's called 'institutional amnesia.' When a lot of people quit or leave a business or industry in a short space of time (it's hit hospitality over the last couple of years, the Australian public service inflicted it on itself) a lot of knowledge is lost, especially knowledge that is acquired, rather than learned. It would not surprise me that, even outside of the increasingly awful conditions, the new people simply haven't had time to learn their craft and there may be no one to teach them.

That's very interesting, thank you for posting! I had seen this first hand when I worked adjacent to the manufacturing industry and watched everything go overseas and all the plant managers get new jobs in different industries and now America has great difficulty making things, but I did not know there was an actual term for that. AI is just going to become another artist's tool or, when sufficiently advanced, a budget-cutting measure.

Doing it for real will still have prestige and be the preferred approach. Historically, all the artists thought that the camera was going to kill them but it turns out it did not.

There's also ways to ethically use the technology (alas, they did not go that route to start).

I think that intro is a mixed bag. Some of it looks pretty good. Some of it just flat out looks like a bad gen that I would toss in the delete pile. Bad AI has a very particular "look" and it's all over that intro.

Just so you guys know, there's a ton of firms right now that are repackaging bog-standard analytics as "AI-driven strategies", lot of hucksterism and snake oil going on right now.

As somebody who actually understands LLMs and diffusion-based image creation, the things that AI can do are being massively oversold right now to generate headlines and get business. It's possible we'll get there but we are so very very very far away, on the order of decades IMO.

IShallRiseAgain posted:

NFTs are a completely worthless technology that never has and never will have value. AI might be production ready a few years down the road (I think its first use case will be SFX and not image generation from scratch), but its absolutely not the case now.

I wouldn’t have killed the other Spiderman. I’d have made the new Spiderman one of his friends, and I’d have given him a name like ‘the Black Spider’ and they would fight crime together before he got his own comic!”

It’s a wonderful quote because that’s exactly what Stan would have done, except his comic would have died in ten issues.

This is exactly what Sony did with their Spider-Man games only they just called him "Spider-Man" as well.

I'm 100% willing to discuss any director's influence and I'm just not seeing it. Nolan made the first two Batman movies, Following, The Prestige, and had Inception in the can before any of the murder stuff, any of the prison break stuff. Post murder accusation and escape conviction he's made Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, and Oppenheimer. This seems like another internet meme trying to take root.

The budget for both movies combined is $166 million, $83 million per movie.

Triple Frontier was 115 million.

On a per movie basis, Rebel Moon is far closer to Extraction 2 (70 million).

Eh, to each it's own. I find a lot of the very fake digital set-pieces and the fake one take scene-stitching to be quite distracting and to hurt the movie's overall look, although overall the movies are enjoyeable.

For reference, John Wick 3 cost 5 million more than Extraction 2 and looked much better.
