Zork I would say is a little different, because I think it's like that on purpose. instead of incompetence and needing you to read the game designers' mind, Zork that knows what it's doing is wrong, but it's toying with you. it's a bit like I Wanna Be the Guy- the point is that it's unfair, and the fun of it (if you like) is tangoing with the unfairness and this kinda smug persona of the all-knowing designer.
I actually really like Zork lol. it's deeply flawed, but there's a playfulness to what it's doing

Zork rules, even with bullshit like the earthquake in zork ii (permanently blocks off an area if you don't get through it by the time it happens) or the wizard showing up and stealing critical items (just a random gently caress-you softlock). In the third one there are simple solutions to many of the puzzles, but they require you giving up items you've acquired, and since the goal of the game is to become the dungeon master, whose raiment is the items you have to give up to solve them you can't actually win the game if you take the shortcuts. I have a lot of fond memories of all the text-based Zorks and the Enchanter series

the early sierra games and infocom games, especially zork since that was their very first game, were directly inspired by stuff like the colossal cave adventure, which gave you text descriptions of rooms, a text parser for interactions, and killed you nonstop. everyone at infocom went to mit and had access to the pdp-10s and poo poo which is what the great cave adventure was designed on in like 1976, and thats what the original zork ran on (it was "released" in like 1977 or 78).

Once shot a man in Reno.
Tangential but since we're on the subject of text adventure games, check this one out (free): https://dwheeler.com/anchorhead/

It's a Cthulhu horror game where you play a woman that moved to a fishing town with your family. The game happens over a few days. Besides the infocom games this one stuck with me. It won a lot of awards.

I've never heard of it so I looked it up:

quote:

The background story is told by a 64-page novella with 19 chapters written by Rupert Goodwins.

Steve is in love with his attractive coworker Emily. Unbeknownst to Steve, Emily is possessed by a daemon named Zelloripus who was banished to Earth, stripped of most of her powers, and trapped into a human female due to unspecified crimes done to other daemons. Emily sees a chance to let someone else suffer and stifle her boredom. She tricks Steve to take three pills she has mixed to "cure his flu". While the pills do cure him, they also grant Zelloripus access to his body and mind. His dreams become both more lucid and strange, each one getting more intense and painful. Steve's psychiatrist does not understand what causes the dreams, and neither does Steve. He refers him to a neurosurgeon. After his health dramatically declines, Steve undertakes brain surgery in an attempt to stop the dreams. Under an anaesthetic, he slips into one more dream, possibly his last.

So basically it seems like an interactive Outer Limits episode
