i thought the mls vs liga mx thing was kinda fun but its a bit less appealing i guess with leagues cup now

maybe it could be mls all stars v the us national team since they're increasingly mutually exclusive :v:

I've been watching this the last couple of years and been banging the drum about how good it is for MLS in the medium term but this is pretty stark:

quote:

Since 2021, MLS is the league that has spent the most on transfer fees in the Americas, according to analysis by AFP on transfer reports provided by world football's governing body FIFA.

In 2021, MLS spent $159.9 million on transfers: three times more than Brazil, five times more than Mexico and 11 times more than Argentina.

The next year, when the other three leagues were recovering from the pandemic, they still outspent the Argentine and Mexican leagues by more than two-to-one and the Brazilian league by 1.6-to-one.

Good article overall

My assumption is we're getting to at minimum 36, maybe 40? If promotion/relegation really comes into play maybe more, but that's still a ways off i think. I think as it is we're gravitating more and more toward 2 fully separate conferences that only real crossover for playoffs and cups. I know a lot people criticize the expansion but its not as if there is a lack of talent pool to keep up as long as salaries keep rising, and the best way to create more mls fans is to add more teams in more places - local connection is MLS's best pitch, otherwise its hard to make a good case why someone in san diego or las vegas or whichever other potential expansion city should be watching MLS over Liga MX, premier league, etc.

Its also been a pretty long time since we've had an expansion team that was an ill-advised failure - chivas usa, rest in peace. Even Inter Miami with their dumb name and high levels of bad management is drawing decent attendance in a notoriously bad market for sports attendance and lots of the recent expansion sides have been pretty big successes on multiple levels.

To be clear i'm skeptical pro/rel is a thing anytime soon or probably ever but who knows. I think at best theres a limited, closed 2 division style system but I don't neccessarily see why that happens versus just more parallel divisions/conferences. MLS Next pro is also kind of a wild card at the moment, I'm not sure the league knows quite what to do with it, they've had big talk about expanding it into more markets and having more unaffiliated sides in it. St Louis used it in an interesting way but i'm generally skeptical how far they can get with it in terms of fan appeal versus just a place for reserves to play. But be it MLS, next pro, or USL for that matter more teams, more soccer stadiums seems like a generally good trend and there isn't really any reason to think we've run out of places in the U.S. and Canada for professional soccer teams to exist.

also if anyone ITT doesn't have it

Toronto FC is a poo poo show:

- Baerdeschi called out Coach Bradley last week post game
- Player Bradley, Osorio and Vasquez (ie "The Midfield" are all out until July or later
- Insigne traveled with the team but got in some kind of fight with Coach Bradley before Saturday night's game and didn't play
- Team is playing incredibly boring uncoordinated football
- Team can't seem to score

Excited to see what happens next!

and they have the highest payroll in MLS, by a good amount!

the 2 highest payrolls in the league are currently bottom of their respective conferences

i wonder who is available they could actually get

assuming they have 10-15m to play with from the sell, theres probably plenty of options available in that range in either europe or argentina or something, the problem is they need to get it done now. If they didnt already have something in motion that seems pretty difficult.

if they can buy someone similar but 5~ years younger it might be a great bit of business, but i dunno if that is doable in this window and it would be rough for cbus fans to be like welp on the season and wait until winter
