FoxTrot is a newspaper comic strip written and drawn by Bill Amend, first hitting comics sections on April 10th, 1988 (34 years next month!). Its focus has always been about the Fox family - Roger, Andy (Andrea), Peter, Paige, and Jason, along with Jason's pet iguana Quincy.

Showcased somewhere in suburban Midwestern America, Amend's strip has notably been pop culture-friendly, giving his take on current social trends, popular fads, and most notably geekdom, poking fun at video games, movies, music and, later on, consumer products like the iPhone.

Amend makes liberal use of the floating timeline, a literary tool that allows for Fox family to exist in a "continuous present". And, depending on who you ask, this either ages the strip, or creates a look back at what was going on in the world, such as Jason's early obsessions with Super Mario Bros. 2, The Simpsons, and 1989's Batman.

Amend will, albeit rarely, give the characters self-awareness that they're in a comic strip, though it does make for interesting storylines that quickly go forgotten as in the next story run, the characters act just as normal as before.

Perhaps because of its relatability to readers, particularly middle class Midwesterners and pop culture enthusiasts, FoxTrot has proven to be a popular comic strip, with Amend touching on topics all of us could approach, either on a familial or consumer level.

Amend himself, a student of physics as that was his college degree, loves nerdom, weaving storylines around World of Warcraft, The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, and of course, Star Wars. He's even admitted to visiting the Starcraft subreddit before.

Amend is still drawing FoxTrot to this day, now publishing the strip only on Sunday's, which can be found on the strip's official website.

At one point in time, there was an animated pilot done, but it never got picked up, and there isn't too much available about it out there other than this link right here basically. Which could be a shame, depending on who you ask - the show is ripe for animation in my opinion, but to many, hearing the voices differently than how they've heard them in their heads for years may be just enough to ruin it for them.

FoxTrot has also had its share of cameos from other comic strips, and even had guest artists do a panel.

If you've never read FoxTrot, you owe it to yourself to give it a shot. For us personally, it's tied with The Far Side as our favorite newspaper comic strip.

What about you guys? What's your take on Amend's strip?

Also, going back to the "floating timeline" device, here's a good (and probably the darkest) comic yet from the strip which acknowledges that while also shedding light on a current social issue:

We're only here to un-do the damage you've done to our family name.
