This was actually a triple dip, because EQSB was a 6th rounder.

The double dips didn't start with Gutekunst though, since Thompson did Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones in 2017.

And who could forget the the 2014 Adams/Abbrederis/Janis receiving hydra.

Do the Jets have the coaching for it? Saleh has a worse record than Fangio did his first two years. The Jets went 7-10 last year which is the same record Denver had in 2021 in a harder division. And the Jets just hired the coach that architected the Broncos putrid offense to be their OC.

Who is also the ex-Packers offensive coordinator. Not that that makes him good but at least he'll be able to install an offense Rodgers knows. Rodgers will audible any play call he doesn't like, so offensive playcaller doesn't even matter much.

The big problem with the Jets is that while they have good skill players at WR and RB, their offensive line is bad.

Hackett didn’t run Lafleur’s offense in Denver, don’t know why you’d expect him to do it in NY. It’s not his offense and he didn’t run it in Green Bay.

If the Jets get Aaron Rodgers, then I'd expect his former OC to run the offense that Aaron Rodgers is most familiar with.

Does he run the LaFleur offense if Rodgers isn't there? Who knows. But if Rodgers is there and Hackett knows the offense, he'd take "being a bad coach" to new heights.

The Bears didn't send a linebacker to the Pro Bowl in 2023 and that just does not fly. This is nature healing.

Nobody is trading for Rodgers other than the Jets. They can’t just ship him off for some low pick to a poo poo team because nobody is taking on that contract if he doesn’t want to play there. Why do you think the Packers only have one suitor?

Their options are trade him to the Jets, he retires and they get nothing and eat a big dead cap charge immediately, or he doesn’t retire, they get nothing, and are forced to pay him an extra 60m to sit on the bench while Jordan Love struggles.

Well, they still have to pay it, they just get to split the cap hit over two years. But even if the trade itself is executed then both sides surely want a trade in principle agreed to well before that.

Yes, but the Jets are incentivized to get this done now while the Packers are incentivized to wait regardless of whether there is an agreement in principle. So if the Jets want to have Rodgers before June 1st, that should cost extra.

I kind of wonder what Claypool's value would be if we tried to trade him again right now. One would assume nobody would give up anything worthwhile for him after a dud season with one year left under contract, but if the asking price for Jerry Jeudy is a first rounder, maybe the WR market is still wonky and you could blame his down year on general Bears stink to recoup a third or something

It's probably smarter to just keep him and see if Fields connects with him during training camp at this point, but it is a bummer that the trade basically broke as badly as it possibly could have to this point

Claypool put up two 800+ yard seasons in a bad offense with a fully washed Ben Roethlisberger throwing to him. I'd at least give him a full offseason before looking to cut bait.

No, I said that it's dumb for a rebuilding team to trade for someone who is going to be a free agent in a year. That's a move contenders make.

Would you rather have Chase Claypool for 2023 or 4 years of control over the 32nd pick in the draft? That's the trade as it presently stands. Every single one of you would take the latter, so I don't get why people are still trying to defend it.

If that 32nd overall pick turns out to be Lamar Jackson, you want the pick. If that 32nd overall pick turns out to be N'Keal Harry, you want Chase Claypool.

As far as "trustworthy wide receivers for a rookie QB to have help them learn the game" Randall Cobb wouldn't be a bad fit.

I think most GMs would tell their decade long QB that they were about to trade up to do a reach for their replacement, yeah.

As has been mentioned, the Bears gave Andy Dalton the courtesy of a phone call and he had been on the team for about 20 minutes at the time.

While I think Gutenkunst should've called Rodgers, the Dalton situation is not comparable.

Dalton signed with them to be the starter and then the Bears traded up for the QB of the future who was obviously going to start before the end of the season like a month later.

quote:

One day after agreeing to a one-year contract, Dalton revealed that the Bears have assured him that he'll be their No. 1 quarterback. It's a guarantee that helped convince him to pick Chicago over other potential free-agent destinations.
