Having your own domain is pretty much it, IMO.

The ISP that I used to use when I was a kid let their domain lapse and I was able to snap it up, so I use that for a lot of stuff now.

Most of the time I get canned cat food shipped from petsmart or chewy they're all dented. At first I thought it was the box getting dropped and sometomes it is - just a few cans dented and some worse than others - but lately it's every drat can with a nearly identical dent. I don't understand how unless they hosed up the canning machines or something. Some redditors speculate that they're deliberately buying factory rejects and mixing them in with normal cans.

Other consumer fuckery - I've had a vendetta against Dawn dish soap because that poo poo leaves a foul petrochemical stench on sponges and my skin that's difficult to wash off. A few years ago I could find a few posts complaining about this but most people claimed they didn't notice anything and it must be bacteria in the sponges (bullshit). I dunno if it's a particular sensitivity like the cilantro soap taste gene.

Anyway, check reviews of most Dawn poo poo in the last few months including the PowerWash that's all the rage and there are thousands of people complaining that it smells godawful since they reformulated. Probably they added more of whatever was bothering me originally. I see now it has a preservative called methylisothiazolinone that is allergenic, cytotoxic and banned in most countries except for uses that require rinsing but hey, I'm sure it's only present in totally safe concentrations.

Oh there's also C9-11 PARETH-8, a surfactant that "gently aids soil removal". This farm to table poo poo is getting too literal.

Yeah, cat food's one of the main ones I've noticed since I feed my cat from a can more often than I feed myself, but it's the same with other cans I've opened. They just feel so flimsy now.

On the shrinkflation tip, I've been watching with grim fascination the rapid diminution of the little breakfast sandwiches I've been getting the last year and a half so that I have something easy to eat in the morning when I'm having a depression day and struggling to muster the willpower to make a full breakfast (I've found that not eating makes sure the depression day gets locked in really bad). The diameter of these things has shrunk for sure, but what's really comical is the little slice of cheese that comes on it. It used to be a square that roughly fit the sandwich, even poking out beyond it.

As of the box my wife picked up this past week, the cheese has finished its gradual and subtle shrinkage and is now very obviously a rectangle that is half the size of what it is supposed to be. I'll try to remember to take a picture next time. It's really funny, like it's SO obvious what's going on there. I haven't even been eating these for two years and they're already unrecognizable.

pretty sure it just goes by raw products, some are measured by pound where they're typically sold at a static price (meat, etc.)

Which brand/store are they from? But yeah, that type of stuff is now all over the place. I wouldn't be surprised if selection also shrinks over time just because of demand.

quote:

In the U.S., the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) monthly collects the prices of some 94,000 items from a scientifically selected sample of goods and services to assemble its representative basket. The numbers are then adjusted to ensure price changes don't reflect improvements in product quality, and weighted in proportion with consumer spending patterns derived from a separate survey of about 36,000 consumers in a given year.

The CPI should be adjusted upwards theoretically in terms of item weight at least (it is why a chained CPI is a such a big deal because it doesn't take into account substitution). That said, there is probably a bunch of ways to game the system especially in terms of additives.

Yeah, the massive drops for Nvidia, Netflix, and to a lesser extent Facebook make a lot of sense if you just see the Nasdaq/S&P having become a "crypto"fied casino where value is just based on betting behavior rather than anything resembling value. Obviously, this applies to stocks as a whole to an extent but really a lot of tech just really doesn't act that different than BTC at this point and huge moves in terms of value are just based on a handful of equities while the Russell 2000 has been going sideways if not losing versus inflation.

Admittedly, I do think the craps table just became hot due to some decent news about inflation that was coming in late last year and then it just took until now for reality to set in and the players are fleeing the table again. The Nasdaq is already back to where it was in late December and the movement is pretty negative.

The VIX is the highest it has been since October, it is just VIX-based ETFs usually are extremely high risk.

Speaking of number going down.

It’s looking like ozempic causes a 260% increase in deep vein thrombosis rates among diabetics, the primary group it’s being prescribed for.

https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/endocrj/68/6/68_EJ21-0129/_html/

More studies are being done so there’s going to be a lag before they pull it but I’d say if we were in the pre-Covid world, Ozempic would definitely get pulled.

That might not be the case anymore, however. I can’t state enough how Trump’s waiving of vaccine safety measures fundamentally changed the paradigm in getting and keeping profitable meds on the market.

I was part of the group that broke the news on the problems with COX-2 inhibitors back in the day and even then there was tremendous corporate pressure to find in favor of the drug company. (They offered funding and future jobs to the grad students who were only making $25k/yr at the time.) One of the major factors in keeping that analysis on course was knowing federal oversight would be there to double check the data. The FDA has been gutted and compromised now so there really aren’t many guardrails left.
