What no that's not how it works at all. Swallowing ice will actually make your body produce more heat. Your body already has their own internal regulation and it always will want to maintain the same internal temperature. Our body evolved to dump excess heat out in the environment, so the best way to cool yourself is by sweating and using the evaporation effect or just use A/C.

Just look up any heatstroke or heat exhaustion tips, they never mention anything about drinking ice water or anything, it's always external, not internal for a reason.

If you couldn't tell by my suggestion to "swallow the ice whole" I was joking friend as people don't generally just knock back ice cubes like a large pill.

I would say in a general science context I'm skeptical that this wouldn't be an effective way of cooling someone down because you know thermodynamics and such, it's going to on a raw level absorb more heat because that's what ice does, but I'm not a doctor and it wasn't a serious suggestion in the first place.

You piqued my curiosity so I googled heat stroke treatment and the mayo clinic directly suggests "chilled water" so I think "nah bro it actually makes your body hotter drinking ice water because of how we evolved" is a half remembered "fact" you learned somewhere from a bad source. Otherwise the inverse would also be true and they'd recommend giving people ice to ward off a cold environment.

You're thinking of deionized water. Distilled is fine, if a little plain tasting.

Yeah, deionized water has long been a no-go for drinking, because of potential long term issues with bones and other organs, but even then, if it's all you have, it isn't going to make you sick to drink if it's limited in use.

Distilled is fine, just... not very tasty.

When I was in college in prep for the semiconductor industry our professor would always say "yeah they put DI water in the drinking fountains they have so much of it" and when actually get our jobs the people working g there are like "no that's loving dumb it's way more expensive than tap water and really not good for you to drink."

Literally never say anything in here about drinking chilled water, every single thing in here is all about external.

It's the same reason why you don't just hook up a hot saline IV or a cup of hot water to someone suffering from hypothermia or frostbite, it's still all external. Your body is already highly regulated with their internal temperatures and trying to change it from the internal by consuming something hot or cold won't work.

You seriously need to do more research if you’re trying to correlate the treatments for heat exhaustion/stroke with those of hypothermia, in terms of consumption of fluids, external treatment, etc.

No offense, but I’m worried you’ll give someone really dangerous suggestions based on hearsay/etc.

And just for fun/shits and giggles, have a few fun references/quotes related to hypothermia:

“Diagnosis and Treatment of Hypothermia” posted:

Airway rewarming with humidified oxygen at 40°C (104°F) is done easily, increases core temperature by 1.0°C (1.8°F) to 2.5°C (4.5°F) per hour, and decreases evaporative heat loss via respiration.17 Intravenous fluids (preferably 5 percent dextrose and normal saline) should be heated to 40°C to 45°C. Heating intravenous fluids can be accomplished most easily using a blood warmer, but a microwave can be used, if calibrated in advance.18 These two methods of active core rewarming have minimal drawbacks and should be implemented on all patients, except those who require passive rewarming measures only.
