Calvin wanted to know how much money I currently had in my bank accounts. I told him that I had two — checking and savings — with a combined balance of a little over $80,000. As a freelancer in a volatile industry, I keep a sizable emergency fund, and I also set aside cash to pay my taxes at the end of the year, since they aren’t withheld from my paychecks.

His voice took on a more urgent tone. “You must have worked very hard to save all that money,” he said. “Do not share your bank-account information with anyone. I am going to help you keep your money safe.” He said that he would transfer me to his colleague at the CIA who was the lead investigator on my case and gave me a nine-digit case number for my records. (I Googled the number. Nothing.) He said the CIA agent would tell me what to do next, and he wished me luck.

Very clearly a rich kid.

I mean, it's true for most of the arts these days, the only people who can afford to pursue them don't need to work for a living, but yeah being a freelancer doesn't pay that well.

It's so funny that this is entirely forgotten. It's not just considered politically impossible anymore, I think a segment of the people in charge have genuinely forgotten that this is something they can do.

I realize most of the handwringing "how can we pay for XYZ" is done in bad faith, but when it comes to their own navies falling apart, I think the western leadership that grew up under neoliberalism and internalized all of the pablum and axioms are kind of hosed lol.

Who regulates online gambling anyway?

At a casino, government inspectors come in to inspect the tables, monitor the dealers, whatever. The Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency monitors every aspect of horse racing, including the horses themselves and how betting is carried out.

But these online slots and roulette, is there anyone watching the code (live, not just when it's approved) to make sure the competition is fair? Is there even a legal requirement that they have to work the same way as the table games they're emulating? Like, how do they know a virtual roulette wheel is as fair and works the same way as a physical table, which is inspected every however many weeks or months?

Modern slot machines are networked and average payout across the floor. If you're playing slots and some prick 300 feet away hits, pack it up and go home, he's snagged your luck for tonight.

So reasonably the apps would also average payouts across the platform right?

And more to the point there’s no reason that wouldn’t also happen with table games, as far as I can tell. Since you can’t virtually count cards, how do you know e-blackjack actually has a randomly shuffled deck and isn’t switching out cards before the draw to produce a certain result?

At the casino, the dealer altering the deck would be obvious, and so would the dealer putting his hand on the roulette wheel to stop it on a certain number, but you would not be able to see this on the apps, it would all be back end, right? (Not a computer guy don’t know how much you can see in the UI, what’s on the app, and what’s going on server side)

If no one is regulating this, it seems comically easy to do from a technical point of view.

"the creative minds of the people who are really into this are so lovely. You know? In their minds, they can create anything, there are no limits, and the things they make are like "what if Ronald Reagan got Rick Rolled?"

"It was one where someone said "Very soon we'll be able to do a new season in 2025..." believe VC from first Mark Capital who said this, "by 2025 I'll be able to put into an AI that I can have a new season of Narcos with Brad Pitt, Travis Kelce and Mr Beast!", and this is the best they can do. All the world's creations and this is what they come up with. This is the future for them - I just want Brand and Mr Beast in the Narcos with SpongeBob."

"You mentioned it, but whether it's a custom season of Narcos just for you starring Mr Beast,...how do you view the tech industry's relationship to culture? Because it seems to me, I think they fundamentally misunderstand that culture needs to be, has something, that's a reference point that's available to everyone, rather than something that is has no relevance, because it is only just the preferences of one individual. That's, like, boutique created for them alone. Like, hey let's say I want a season of Narcos with Mr Bean instead of Mr Beast, what is the mentality of the people the people selling AI? How do you view their relationship to culture and how they understand it?"

"So there's two different ways here. There is the people making these AI models, and the people who are profiting off of it. So the Sam Altmans of the world, I don't believe that they care about creativity, they care about finding new ways to sell cloud computing to people and they've got a whole industry believing this as well. That this is going to be the future.

Now, AI fantasists, I believe that they look at creativity as a skill issue. That, if they could just play guitar, they too could be Iron Maiden - and the only thing stopping them from doing Narcos with SpongeBob is that they just they lack the skill. Which is just... they (think they would have creative ability but) don't have the time because they're too busy coding, or whatever vacuous business thing they do.

It kind of goes back, I don't know if you remember the George Carlin AI special ...Will Sasso on that podcast said it we could really use a voice like George Carlin in 2024, and that is ultimately the problem. They see art as something that is generative. You learn enough funny, you are now a comedian. They don't see it as, you do enough stand up and you get funny, but the problem is they don't understand that creativity is limited. It's fallible, it's finite. George Carlin is dead, and he got different, in the way he was funny changed over the years as he got older. That's because it was an experience-based. Things based on the people he met, the things he did, and the things he read, and so on and so forth. They don't understand that. They don't believe culture is experiential."

"I believe with the wider AI thing, the reason that they're able to look at these horrifying videos - these really like genuinely chilling videos that just are gross they make you feel nasty inside - like some of the AI generated art, they just see culture as a commodity. "

"I guess like, I mean yeah, like put all the the sort of triumphal triumphalist language about like Hollywood is over this is a holy poo poo moment - I just think it speaks to like a fundamental misunderstanding here, because like if what these models are doing is only scouring existing images and human knowledge, then it fundamentally can never create anything new or novel or different. It's only just recycling the same poo poo that's already out there. Which is like, I mean like, for art really to matter people want a unique emotional experience, they want to see something they haven't seen before, or look at the world in a new way. None of these models are able to."

"Without human beings you can't do that, and it's funny people say "well what about covers of songs or what about remakes?" - even with House of the Rising Sun, we don't even know who made that, could be hundreds of years old, they've never actually found out who, there are some insane versions of that song because people reinterpret it every time. The Animals', most famous version arguably, very different from the Muse version, which I absolutely love. Great version of that song. The Jimmy Hendrix (cover) is kind of poo poo but nevertheless it was it's interesting."

The whole concept of diversity in that sense is basically confined to America, because of being a white settler colony with chattel slavery, followed by waves of immigration. Even then, it's not evenly distributed. Wisconsin is, generally, not a racial rainbow, there are counties in the Deep South that are almost entirely black, Indian reservations and Eskimo villages etc.

It doesn't have to do with woke or not woke, but what the people who live where media is made think the country, and in this case world, looks like.

Not just America, as PFC said, controlling disease has been a major focus for states as long as they have existed and long before diseases were understood. Even before states, primitive taboos most often have a practical effect that mitigates what we would call a public health risk, to one degree or another.

Not doing anything about a pandemic disease just wouldn't compute until the logic of capitalism fully overtook ... well every other belief system, human connection etc.

A morally good act requires the goodness of the object, of the end, and of the circumstances together. An evil end corrupts the action, even if the object is good in itself.

The object of the choice can by itself vitiate an act in its entirety. There are some concrete acts - that it is always wrong to choose, because choosing them entails a disorder of the will, that is, a moral evil.

It is therefore an error to judge the morality of human acts by considering only the intention that inspires them or the circumstances (environment, social pressure, duress or emergency, etc.) which supply their context. There are acts which, in and of themselves, independently of circumstances and intentions, are always gravely illicit by reason of their object; such as blasphemy and perjury, murder and adultery. One may not do evil so that good may result from it.

So, by the same token, however evil the circumstances are - the American healthcare system - an individual choosing to do good is good.

A single doctor cannot provide aid for everyone who suffers in America, but he could have provided aid for this man. You can’t just confront evil in principle, or verbally, you have to act against it. It couldn’t address the large scale system that leads to suffering, but it could have spared someone from it.

Finally, it’s always best to lead by example. Tweet “someone should do something” after you have done something, and moreover, something very few people are in a position financially, or even literally, the surgeon responsible, to do.
