My first exposure to the Alchemist class, although I didn't know it, was in Final Fantasy X. Rikku was definitely meant to be like a thief/alchemist specialist. And i never wanted to use those abilities / didnt get much out of it. But i remember that, because of her "Mix" ability where she mixes items together, or, like, mixes ingredits together to make super-items(?), FFX strategy guides had to have massive Appendices with every possible combination of stuff.

The X-2 alchemist is ok, it's cool that they can use items without actually consuming them, but all it does is turn them into a crappy white mage.

I'd probably use item classes more if they fired the potions or whatever from a military grade sniper rifle while prone. You want a potion? *BANG* Eat poison! *KAPOW* Mixed this up special just for you! *BLAMMO*

sometimes the mix ability will let you turn mundane items into powerful items like mega elixirs.

not the most romantic job, but a powerful support class if you will give it the time of day and maybe some positive reinforcement

The Chemist in FFT is honestly pretty good. Sure, you must spend money to keep a decent lineup of items and they cannot use their cures on an EOE but the lack of casting times and no need for MP and far more accurate healing makes it more desirable to chuck an Elixir or X Potion at your ally during a pinch (or even a Phoenix Down when you are too late).

Also in the Atelier series, while your Alchemist main character is indeed mediocre in combat compared to the rest of the party, their item creation capability makes them far more flexible compared to them, and often you are better off using them to wipe out an enemy encounter with the single use of a Bomb.

Yup. Chemist = looking something up on a big rear end chart on gamefaqs, alchemist = your potions are better

This lol. I don't even use consumables normally, the thought of using them up to fight is well, frankly it's sickening.

Blowing people up with items such as grenades or magic scrolls is good, however, it should not require a dedicated class. The point of items in a JRPG is that anyone can use them to perform actions beyond their normal abilities, at the cost of a permanent resource. When you require a specialized party member to do it it's just magic that costs money. Basically, it's a redundant mechanic.

First time I ever messed with an alchemist class was in ragnarok online and I didn't like it one bit, but more power to those who do.

Combining items to make new items is a win idea but needs to be something that happens outside battle like the Alchemy Pot in DQ8.

i agree in principle op BUT the ff5 chemist is some hype poo poo because mix can do some wicked weird stuff and break game mechanics. you cn use mix to avoid fighting the second phase of the last boss for instance, or gve pcs the heavy status effect that bosses have and breaks scripting for a bunch of crap. all other chemsists suck though

One of my favorite JRPG battle moments was in octopath, using my very last full hp/mp/bp recovery item with the alchemist's "affect entire party" special ability in order to perfectly cancel out the final boss's ultimate super move where he completely drains and debuffs everyone

Trying to think of my second coolest JRPG alchemy moment and coming up empty though
