What are the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and/or Canadian Championship? These two competitions are the tournaments to determine the best club, regardless of level of play, in their respective country. What this really means is any team, regardless of how good they are, can win a trophy. What's so important about these competitions? Other than the trophy, the winners of these competitions get access to the CONCACAF Champions League, where they will proceed to lose to a Mexican team in depressing fashion. Who gets to play? All professional teams NOT in MLS Next Pro; amateur and semi-pro teams must qualify in their respective leagues and competitions. How do the competitions work? Both competitions are single-leg knockout competitions. The U.S. Open Cup features 100 clubs, while this year's Canadian Championship features 14 clubs. The U.S. Open Cup's competition is staggered by the quality of team: First Round (USL League Two, NPSL, and other assorted amateur clubs enter) Second Round (USL Championship, USL League One, and NISA clubs enter) Third Round (most MLS clubs enter) Fourth Round (MLS clubs playing in Champions League and four others enter) Then the Round of 16 onwards For the Canadian Championship, Toronto and the Vancouver Whitecaps receive byes to the quarterfinals, while the remaining 12 clubs play-in. The U.S. Open Cup is usually bracketed by geography, and draws happen every two rounds. The Canadian Championship's fixtures have all been set already. Where can I watch these games? The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will be on HBO Max (with some early-round matches on Bleacher Report's app and YouTube page), while OneSoccer hosts the Canadian Championship. When does this start? Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup: March 21 Canadian Championship: April 18

Never heard of this competition. Sounds a lot like the FA Cup. Do the MLS teams actually put effort into this once they start getting into the fixtures?

Much like the FA Cup, it matters to some teams more than others, and it also depends on how far they have gotten in the competition. You don't see a first-squad lineup for MLS teams in the Third Round very often, but as it gets closer to the final more starters will play. The best example of "who wants it more" would be 2013 D.C. United, which won the U.S. Open Cup while achieving the worst record in League play in the HISTORY of MLS. They had more wins in Cup fixtures (4) than League fixtures (3)!!!!!

blue squares posted:Never heard of this competition. Sounds a lot like the FA Cup. Do the MLS teams actually put effort into this once they start getting into the fixtures? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Open_Cup It was in fact modeled on the FA Cup; the original trophy was donated by Thomas Dewar, 1st Baron Dewar, and the competition dates from the 1913–1914 season when it was known as the National Challenge Cup. I don't like the name change to Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup or the change in the actual trophy, which is a nice enough trophy, but doesn't have the history of the original Dewar Cup trophy. They should have taken a cue from the NHL and kept the original trophy and name (Stanley Cup/Dewar Cup); frankly the original trophy is a classic; it has been retired to the US National Soccer Hall of Fame, but they could have made multiple replicas of the original trophy, like what the NHL does with the Stanley Cup. Instead in its infinite wisdom, USSF broke that connection to the past. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dewar_Cup
