The first thing I ever typed in a browser bar was farts.com.
http://web.archive.org/web/19981212024901/http://www.farts.com/

Oh hell yeah. I need to find that story about the camping trip and the partially rehydrated tuna noodle cassarole and the farts trapped in the sleeping bag that had me in loving tears back in the day.

The stories section isn't working. Boo.

libraries were really weird about the internet in the early days. a huge proportion of librarians thought searching was going to be all about doing complex boolean searches in online databases, and then filtering based on author or article title. i suppose it's just an extension of how books and academic papers are catalogued, but in hindsight it's very odd to imagine navigating the web in that way, what with the constantly changing content.

I absolutely remember: it was "music jokes" and it led me to this page, miraculously still up, which I printed out and handed out to kids at school

"sound off in the comments!" is, even by the standards of web comics, a terrible final-panel punchline holy poo poo

it was in my home town's public library on a shared computer you could reserve for an hour at a time, and the search itself was almost definitely about a) scary movies, b) professional wrestling, or c) the newspaper comic strip foxtrot.

there weren’t really any search engines at the time. I remember going to a page on the caltech website that had some sort of prototype search engine. I don’t remember what my first search was, but it was probably some anime thing.

yea calvin and hobbes being in the papers was a bit before my time so that was my big go-to. its one of those things i've mostly forgotten about now but had a big impact on my development. i still have a bunch of those books somewhere.
