It's been many many years since we've heard from the Cylons and they might not even exist anymore! That said, we should always be on guard.

What is BSG all about?
BSG is a semi-cooperative board game for 3-9 players (realistically 5, 6 or 7). Each character has unique abilities and all must work together to save humanity. However, some number of players are secretly Cylons. The humans must uncover the traitors while managing their own resources and scrambling to escape the threat of Cylon ships pursuing their tiny fleet.

Purpose of this thread
This thread is designed to be a central BSG discussion thread. The OP will be kept up to date with all past and currently running games. Moderators can post their intent to run new games and post links to those games and players can check in to see what games are going to start up. In addition, any and all questions about the game, especially rules questions are welcome.

All prior games require archives, but I will get them posted on here in due time.

For the interim, I mainly want to use this thread to see if people are still interested in discussing and possibly playing BSG again and if so, to try and try and finish Coolguye's moderation tool, which has been in limbo for a long time.

I'm interested in playing, though I've never PBF -- it's all been live for me.

My only contribution at this time is I'm amazed that, for a game with this many moving parts and variables (e.g., when humans can become Cylons), it so often comes down to a matter of inches. Game before last, the freaking toasters pulled out a win by reducing a resource, can't remember which but it wasn't pop, to zero. On the next turn, mine, I would have been able to activate FTL. I had a strategic planning card and rolled just to see what would have happened; I got the hard eight (yes, I know that's a craps reference, whatever) even without the card, and I would have been able to jump us away to victory with 1 pop left.

oooh, good idea, Numbers! Although I enjoy playing BSG IRL, unfortunately I missed the boat for BSG forum games. I'm a bit busier these days, but I'd give it a shot!

Also, no Exodus to burn for me... mostly because I held off on buying the expansions, thinking to myself, "oh, I'll wait until there's a sale!"... two weeks later, they're out of print and cost a fortune. oops :v:

I forget, did I ever ask for DeckManager to alert the mod when the current player is in the Brig?

If not, please add that to the list of features, because I've lost count of the number of times a moderator has lost track of who's in the Brig.

there was definitely never any alerts specifically for the brig coded, but everything is a Location and every Location has a sense of which players are present. so it would absolutely know if someone is in the brig, i even have a ToString for the locations that specifically spits out who is present where.

i should at least update this stuff to use more recent versions of .net so when you go to use it you aren't scraping for whatever the gently caress version of .nutz was in use *checks notes* TEN YEARS AGO.

I'm interested in hearing what people who played a lot of old BSG think about Unfathomable.(the Cthulhu themed remake from FFG)

The two times I've played it, it felt even more doom spirally than BSG because invaders interfered with rooms, so as the situation got worse the good team had less and less options available. But in the second game we used items a lot more, and they seemed very overtuned for good.

I've never been able to work myself up for any of the non-BSG iterations. Too much of the BSG boardgame's feel comes from evoking the early tone of the show. Kind of akin to the Dune boardgame: the theme carries a huge amount of imaginative weight for getting players invested that just isn't there for a mechanical reproduction (see: Rex).

I haven't played or looked through Unfathomable, but I imagine it suffers because it can't pull on four seasons and one miniseries of screen grabs, quotes, and plot points to make the cards come alive.

When Sual uses his OPG to declare martial law you remember the scene from the miniseries when he's just up to his shoulders in poo poo trying not to drown.

Add to that having screen grabs and evocative titles on all the skill cards (as I understand it, UF lacks solid art here) and corners of the game just get filled in. Then screen grabs on quorum cards, mutiny cards, etc...on everything. It really evokes the show, while not necessarily leaving those who haven't been big fans out of it.

the return of this thread inspired me to rewatch the miniseries and 33 for the first time in probably a dozen years, and guess what: this show still absolutely whips rear end

If we do a forum BSG game, can I call dibs on that character who's ability is GUN, with one round? (...Cally, I think? From an expack IIRC) Since both times I've played as them, I've headshotted a Cylon early on despite other people doubting me immensely, then was immediately vindicated each time with hilarious results haha :D
(Basically, I barged in both times, was uncompromisingly adamant I was right and made my argument about someone, then everyone else disregarded it and were like "WTF are you doing??? STO- ...oh, you were totally right. Yep good call, you can be our cylon detector." It was pretty funny for the group both during and after. Definitely my most memorable moments)

It is hard for me to put into words how much I despise Cally's design, but I'm going to try.

1) Cally's Skill Set is awful. She draws 2 Eng, which is the second (third?) worst color in the game and 1 each of Pol/Lea/Tac, which are the good colors. That means that on average, her hand will be minorly positive for most checks, but not good enough to ensure having good cards.
2) Her drawback is incredibly painful, due to how dilute her hand is. Oh, you used your one XO on your turn and drew a Lea/Tac Crisis? Well too bad, you have to play a negative card or not play at all! And it's not going to get any better as your hand gets smaller
3) Her static ability is good, but with some severe caveats, namely a) you have to draw a Skill Check Crisis (about 60% or so), b) the team has to decide it's worth it to try and pass and c) there then needs to be a card that you actually want to remove, because if you overkill the check, her ability does literally nothing.
4) Her OPG is the dumbest thing put to cardboard and that includes the Ionian Nebula and they buffed it with the release of Daybreak. Her OPG is the single best Cylon reveal in the entire game: -1 Morale, the player discards their entire hand and they lose access to their OPG. After Daybreak, they don't even get the new character's OPG. It's completely insane.

I played a tabletop game where I was Apollo and a friend of mine who drew 6 Cylon cards in his first 5 games played Cally. I had no proof he was a Cylon, but I was wary of him anyway, just in case. I abused Apollo's static as much as I could, pulled all the Viper tricks in my arsenal to stay in space before his turn. Then, we jumped at an awkward time, I landed on the Hangar Deck right before his turn, he drew his cards and shot me.

Literally nothing I could do about it.

I think it subverts the entire spirit of the game to be able to directly and with 100% clarity verify whether or not someone is a cylon with such a small penalty for being wrong (for the humans). Isn't that a big part of why people think Pegasus sucks?

Nah, Pegasus is fine. Exodus is the one that sucks.

I'm glad you find it funny, but it doesn't make me feel better. That game was at least 10 years ago and I still remember how pissed I was.

Actually, it wasn't even pissed, it was more resigned and annoyed.

I do dislike how the airlock provides an immediate, definitive answer. Pegasus' guns are also too strong imo, and the second ship tends to make ship damage largely irrelevant. People still generally like Pegasus on balance though. Shoving someone out the airlock is certainly thematic and dramatic.

If there was a BSG 2.0, I'd take the good parts of Pegasus (the ship), shove them into Galactica's design, and bin the second ship mechanic entirely. I've played a basic, no-Pegasus game or two over the years since our group quit grinding the game and I actually really enjoy how fragile Galactica feels and how important fighters and their positioning becomes. It adds a lot of tension to the combat that is sorely lacking post-Pegasus (and that a ton of house rules exist to try to bring back).

The Exodus modules are mostly disasters and some of the characters are busted (Tory lol)

does anyone remember what the Dee Maneuver was? for some reason it seems to have escaped my memory sometime between now and fifteen years ago when I last played/ran a PBP game

It probably has something to do with using her OPG and spiking morale to change into a different character with a new OPG.

Which wouldn't work in Daybreak with the change to OPGs.

Cally was an Exodus character, actually. The Pegasus characters were Cain, Ellen, Kat, Dee and the Cylon Leaders.

Also Ellen rules.

Honestly, Daybreak is the only essential expansion imo. And that's mostly for the better treachery deck and mutiny mechanics. None of the expansion module/gametypes were ever good iirc.

I was reading through the old PBP games of this recently and there’s some great moments. Probably the laugh out loud funniest moment was the Double Secret Cylons game where (human) Mills accused (human) CC of being a cylon in some kind of insane gambit to get himself killed and flip cylon.

Efficient -- When you activate the Communications location, you may look at every Civilian Ship on the game board and may move any number of them.


Pretty certain the Dee manoeuvre was moving every Civ on the board into raiders. Combine with forward-XO or crit-sit to double/triple move them, then the next raider activation could mean -10 pop if enough civs were on the board.
