Honkai: Star Rail is a turn-based gacha RPG by HoYoverse (formerly MiHoYo), developers of Genshin Impact and Honkai Impact, featuring very high production values (wow I wonder where they got the money for that), a snappy turn-based combat system, and a space train. It will release on PC, Android, and IOS on April 26th, with PS4 and PS5 versions in the works. man that theme song was cheesy but it kinda owns, ps2 jrpg vibes.

Characters
Characters are your party members, obviously. You're given a fair few for free throughout the story or for completing certain side content or temporary events, but most must be obtained through the gacha.

Characters are defined by two things - their Element, and their Path, or their role in combat.

The elements are:
Physical
Fire
Ice
Lightning
Wind
Quantum
Imaginary

And the Paths are:
Destruction (All-Rounder)
Hunt (Single Target DPS)
Erudition (Multi-Target DPS)
Harmony (Offensive/Utility Support)
Nihility (Debuffer)
Preservation (Defensive Support/Tank)
Abundance (Healer)

Characters exclusively deal damage of their element, and their Path indicates what role they fulfill in combat, as well as affecting the benefits they get from certain equipment. You can think of Paths as their class, if that helps explain things.

Going back to the screenshot above, we can see that Seele is a Quantum Hunt character. In other words, a single target DPS character that deals Quantum Damage.

Combat

As mentioned, Star Rail is a turn-based RPG. Characters and enemies take individual turns (the order indicated by the icons on the left) using their basic attack, skills, and ultimates. Using a skill consumes Skill Points, which are shared among your party. Basic Attacks, meanwhile, regenerate skill points. As characters use their skills and attack, they will generate energy. When their energy is full, they can use their ultimate, a powerful technique. Unlike Skill Points, Energy is on a per character basis.

Each enemy has two bars - the red bar, representing their HP, and a white bar, representing their toughness. Enemies are weak to up to 3 elements - rather than taking increased damage from that element, taking damage of that element will reduce their toughness bar. When having their toughness reduced to 0, that enemy will be broken, taking increased damage and suffering a debuff based on what element broke them. After a turn, the enemy that was broken will return to normal with its toughness bar fully restored.

There are support characters that can push allies forward in the turn order, as well as attacks that can push enemies back in it - therefore, managing turn order and setting up a barrage of attacks on turns the enemy is broken is a key part of the game.

Exploration
Rather than the full open world of Genshin, Star Rail's map is more similar to a classical JRPG, with large cities and more boxed in dungeons. There are still puzzles and bonus challenges to find, but there's less ground to cover, for the most part. While exploring outside of cities, enemies will appear on the overworld - you can launch an attack with your active character to initiate combat, or avoid them.

How much is this like Genshin?
As mentioned, it lacks the open world aspect, and the elemental system is much simpler. However, the aesthetic and artstyle is obviously pretty similar, though Star Rail is obviously far more science fantasy than just raw fantasy. It also lacks any sort of co-op features, at least at the moment.

Do I need to know anything about Honkai?
Star Rail takes place in an alternate universe version of Honkai's setting. Some characters will recur, but so far they serve different roles than they did in Honkai, and are basically different people. It's not a direct sequel or anything.

Is this gacha?
Yes, sadly.

Is this worth playing anyway?
Combat's fun and it looks really nice, and the story seems neat if a bit technobabbly. I like the writing more than Genshin's just because there's no Paimon equivalent to make every conversation go in circles for five minutes. Up to you. Gacha is extremely bad, though. Always remember that. Don't spend any money, and if you must spend money, set a hard spending limit per month, make it low, and don't get tempted to spend more money if spending money still doesn't get you what you want. If money's burning a hole in your pocket, go get some food you like, you'll probably enjoy it more than losing at a virtual anime jpg casino. i had a giant fuckoff calzone the other day, it was great.

The mobile gaming subforum on this site and the gachagaming subreddit on, well, reddit, both have useful addiction resources. Do not let the anime gacha game devs gently caress you, even if you enjoy the game they're putting out. Even if you want to support them (and i dont think the genshin devs need money at this point), buy official merch or something. And if you do gacha, you go to hell, before you die. Please.

How bad is the Gacha system?
Roughly equivalent to Genshin's - currency split between standard banner currency and limited banner currency, character banner with a pretty low rate, soft pity at 75, hard pity at 90, 50/50 chance to get the thing that's on rateup, if you don't get the thing on rateup you're guaranteed to get it the next time, dupes of a character/weapon give small bonuses or niche gimmicks rather than anything game changing.

There's a few niceties, like being able to access some 5* Lightcones (weapons) for free via certain endgame grinds, the standard banner giving you a selector at 300 pulls (which is a very high amount but will eventually happen if you play the game for long enough), and the lightcone banner having only a single lightcone on rateup instead of the two genshin's weapon banner has, and very slightly higher rates, but it's still basically the same system. You're given a free standard pool 5* via the new player banner, called the Departure Warp, which lasts 50 rolls and is guaranteed to give you that 5* before those 50 rolls are up. Roll on that before anything else.

Do I have to spend?
I realize everyone says this for every gacha game and its varying amounts of true but the characters you're given for free in this game do actually seem very good, especially the Fire version of the protagonist. There are also several good 4*s. With the pity system working like Genshin's and thus carrying over between banners, you will also inevitably get 5* characters over time, even if you won't get every single one you want. (And all limited time characters will be rerun eventually, and then rerun again, etc, like every other gacha game, so don't let FOMO get to you.)

I have more indepth questions.
Prydwen.gg has very good, well-formatted guides that should answer any questions you have, as well as information on things like characters and gear.

When does this come out?
~18 hours from now at the time of this OP.

I played this during closed beta. It's good. Can't wait for the launch.

Well I guess I'll have to wait, actually. Tick tock.

Hmm. Playing Genshin like a year ago was my first experience with gachas, and the whole thing seemed scummy enough to make me think I'd never play another. I'm an absolute sucker for good turn based combat though, I'll probably wind up trying it out against my better judgement. No risk of it ever sucking money out of me, so whatever. No paimon equivalent is a huge plus, that was maybe the most aggressively annoying I've ever found a videogame character.

Hope the combat is genuinely engaging and fun for a while at least!

Is it just me or wouldn't it make more sense to swap the roles for Erudition and Destruction?

Seems more intuitive to me. Erudition being jack of all trades and Destruction being AoE damage.

Is there any reason to jump into this right at launch if I’m mildly interested? Promotional launch pulls that’ll go away later or whatever.

Click the button and find out. I don't think so but also I don't remember.

Fun fact: deleting the beta also deletes the launch client. So do that first before downloading. (its only ~10gb though so no big deal)

about 40-60 standard banner rolls, plus some random other goodies like Serval (a 4* character) and rando currencies.

You can borrow a unit from a friend in some content, but it's just you borrowing the character and controlling them yourselves, not co-op.

The MC actually does get a bit of voiced dialog in a few cutscenes/sidequests, not a ton but more than Genshin. In terms of general vibes, the male MC's animations and VAing goes way more passionate while the female MC is more detached, almost has an emotionless vibe.

No actual gameplay difference but compared to Genshin they do give off fairly different vibes.

Havent really played a turned based rpg on my phone since like ffbe. Genshin is fine on PC but I can never get my hands to do what they need to do on the phone and it sucks when Im tdy out of town without access to my pc.

So really looking forward to it.

The first time I tried, it sounded like they wanted me to preload the game on EGS to finish the process, but I soon learned you can't do that, so I went back to the website and tried to get to that page again to reread it, and that's when it started throwing errors.

Anyway, I downloaded the client from their own site and was able to log into it, so I assume I must have done what it wanted at some point in there. It never explicitly said "Nice, you've successfully preregistered" or anything, though.

Oh make sure you log into the game before it launches and hit the download all button on the main screen.

That way you aren’t stuck waiting for it to download with the 100 million other people.

It’s about a 5.5 gig download.

You get one guaranteed 5* from the 40 roll starter banner then another 5* selector after 300 rolls on the standard banner.

Don’t use the premium currency on the standard banner though since they supposedly will be giving plenty of tickets for that one.

I'm assuming it's less plenty and more consistent. As far as hoyo goes I only know genshin but like how you get a consistentt trickle of standard pulls through the free battle pass, by leveling characters, and then the five you can buy each month with the stardust.

I'm just assuming they'll be following that same philosophy.

E: this doesn't change the point of don't spend money on the standard banner

the 4*s are good and of the 5*s only bronya is that busted, and you can get her via the selector eventually. It's really not worth bothering with unless you just genuinely enjoy rerolling, even with the time investment.

the value of a busted starter will decrease in the long run as you naturally pull more and more, especially if the game ends up powercreeping
