captain I ahave a penis where My vagiana was supposed to be now giant penus.
I've been away from the forums for quite a long time but never forgot spending way too much of my teen years here. . . has there been any kind of vision or communication from the new site owners? Any plans to breathe new life into the site? There are still active threads from years ago...hell there is a thread in ask/tell with over 30000 replies. How is anyone supposed to catch up and be a part of the conversation in something like that?

It seems like nothing has really changed since lowtax sold the site. What gives? Or am I just out of touch and missing everything?

Part of that is nothing really needs to change.

New features show up and all that, but if you are suggesting that there should be a push attract a new audience, I think that would not end well. For better or worse, the community of SA is kinda what it is and I'm unconvinced that the majority of folks here would not want to see that compromised.

I'd put my money on SA being 'fine' and 'treading water' for awhile yet. It's a pretty unique spot on the Internet and it seems people trickle in and out relatively slowly on both ends.

Yeah, it's pretty refreshing that nothing is significantly changing just for the sake of change. If the forums pursued Reddit style revamps where individual posts can be upvoted and every loving reply gets indented, it would pretty much kill my interest in reading.

I hope things remain more or less the same. SA is unique in not changing that much and that's part of it's charm.

As for a 3000 page thread. Just post. Still better than whatever facebook does.

Are you aware of why lowtax sold the site? If you are, why would you expect that the intent of the current owner would be to change it?

with most of those threads you only need to read the last couple pages to be "caught up" enough to join the conversation.

there are also several shorter threads you could join.

The SA forums went through several iterations but stopped evolving at some point, and I think now the general vibe is that to keep it like a historic community while the userbase slowly declines. A lot of the activity has been subsumed by megathread with their own in-group, culture and rules that more or less function as a whatsapp convo, and due to various fortunate or unfortunate happenings over time a lot of activity migrated to discord channels. Its not a bad end for SA considering how many other community sites on the internet ended up disintegrating completely.

Now you use SA basically just access your bookmarked threads, and use them kind of like giant chat threads.

As far as why I come back to SA after using other forums for many years, or why don't I use reddit more, because on specific threads the quality to noice level is waaayy better than any sub you can find on reddit.

Multithreaded convos are the #1 reason why I don't gently caress with Reddit. Irredeemable poo poo tier format. Updoots are technically worse but the indented reply thing really gets under my skin.

its very much a personal preference, and like 15 years ago there were several major web forum platforms that simply allowed the user to choose between threaded vs chain view, which makes a lot more sense than what either sa or reddit do, but its kind of an archaic format either way

that's been the case for 25 years. it's always been the unique community and frankly, the $10 making it prohibitive for people to create accounts that will just get banned, leading to growth and popularity of SA.

its population decline right now is pretty tightly correlated to "how would folks come here". SA doesn't have cultural influence it gained in the mid-2000s anymore but it also lacks any content generation that LED to folks joining in the mid-early-2000s, as well as the early 2010s when the curated and moderated LP's were popping off.

i dont really see that reversing anymore though the new leadership made it feel like it could for a bit, fwiw

if we want the forums to become popular again we should get back into the piracy business. all the big streaming companies are disappearing their shows and movies as part of some tax scam its important archival work to keep art alive

the issue is that nowadays the way people access content is largely through video format rather than text which is what SA had being about. Text-based LPs have long being subhumed by twitch for instance.

Maybe it's just me: but I notice that there's a tendency nowadays for newer online communities to coalise around YT personalities.

SA is mostly unique as kind of a repo of mid-2000s internet culture frozen in stasis. Other than that it's just a chatgroup for people in their late 30s/early 40s at this point.

Uniqueness isn't nessessarily a selling point by itself

It’s completely useless for discussion as the voting system rewards a pithy one liner more than a salient point because 99% of humanity are idiots. Small curated subreddits can be all right but most of them are like reading the dialogue in a marvel movie.

It also rewards things that sound true or things the community believes over reality. Every subreddit ends up as its own little echo chamber where the same ideas are cargo culted day in and day out and people are routinely removed for pointing this out.

there are some subreddits where everyone just shitposts and that seems to reduce the echo chamber tendency.

The forums have only a sliver of the activity of compared to what they had before, but I guess some people aren't happy until its all consolidated down to 10 mega-threads with the same 40 people posting for that special community feel.

I took a hiatus around the time LowTax smacked his 3rd wife/girlfriend around. I left because I felt like the community is becoming too closed off, this place need fresh blood to survive. I came back because Reddit and Facebook both suck balls and Twitter is dead.

I thought Jeff bought the forums to try to make things better, not more of the same.

I think the cost to join is a feature. It helps drive away bots and other scammy accounts that plague so much of the internet. Even if it cost just 1$ it would serve the purpose of filtering out a lot of undesirables.

What else do people even use? Obviously there's reddit and social media. I think a lot of people are getting burnt out on those. There's discord of course. Are there any other big BBcode forums still around? Or other alternatives?

I would appreciate some new users joining each year and seeing the frequency of content go back up.

I got burnt out on other social medium platforms. Reddit/TikTok/Instagram are addictive and made me feel like I was rotting my brain away, so I've stepped away. I don't think I'm the only one who feels that way, but I'm not sure those under the age of 25 remember a time without video-style social media - I think it's worth spreading the word around.

I think as someone who is the rare new user I'd like to comment that I think the value of these forums is that it does feel like a small community of people who can slow down and have more of a conversation.

I got unhappy with new social media cause it felt like my brain was rotting and people would constantly just parrot the same received wisdom at each other.

I don't know that a ton of new people would maintain that vibe but I feel like if others end up in the same situation as me there may be something of a newbie boom not enough to stop the decline just slow it for a bit the Internet tends to be unpredictable.

Sorry for the long post.

I wonder this as well. Anyone who isn't a re-reg that has legit signed up for the first time in the past several years seems to have some variant of "I knew about this place for many years because of X (fill in the blank here, could be a friend, photoshop, let's play, whatever) and just finally decided to sign up for Y (fill in the blank reason here).

I can't remember anyone saying they signed up recently because they just stumbled upon the site all on their own lately, I'm not sure how you would even do that anymore. Is the "join for game" still a thing sometimes?

I think I found it when I was a teenager in the 2010's and trying to find LP's of the old DOS hidden agenda game I think I might have found some here or on the Bay12Game forums after that I would usually lurk in the LP threads that were available to the public.

I recently rediscovered the site cause of the aforementioned social media starting to feel like doing the daily Walmart chant. I've been lurking a bit since then but recently bought an account as a Christmas present to myself.
