some crazy thing

The better question is why you would *want* these forums to change in order to be more popular? Look at all the big social sites, and think about the forums just becoming more like them, twitter, Reddit, other, etc.

syntaxfunction posted:

"right combination of extremely woke, terminally online, and alone/fat" is extremely stupid and dumb, but hell I'd still take it over jailbait and CHUD subreddits, the hellhole that is tweeters, or just posting thirty seconds clips about nothing for engagement bait.

I have to say the main people that have given me pause on writing anything else in this thread or contributing to it in a meaningful way are the broke brained goons who believe that this internet space should be as lovely and right wing poisoned as the rest of the internet, and that something is wrong with this site for not being actively enshittified by and for money for VCs.

It's like how in IRL political talk when someone says "we need to appeal more to the everyday man!" what they actually mean is their caricature of a cishet white man who is subtly or openly racist and misogynistic, and definitely would not approve of these "unwashed migrants" or "disgusting pervy trannies", when overwhelmingly political polling shows that while the media has shifted right wing, most of the voter base is actually not

Like, Reddit exists. If you disagree that these forums hold value maybe you should become a redditor where you can enjoy your dubiously underage pornographic anime girls and quip-based political discourse in peace.

Nobody's brought up "unwashed migrants" or "disgusting pervy trannies" except you, in this post. Why did you bring this up? How does this relate to the thread?

this place is already like reddit, sorry to say. every thread is its own micro-culture completely separate from all the others, just like how reddit boards work. it just doesn't sort by popularity by default and requires an entry fee

...well, I don't see how your analogy is at all valid. My position is that this website could stand to be a little naughtier than it is currently, for the purposes of comedy and making jokes, and being creative. A joke is something you don't expect, and comedy requires a little naughtiness in order to be truthful: and I feel the gains (lols) would be worth more than the potential losses (someone perhaps having their feelings hurt).

This is the reason I'm sad that the frontpage is no longer a thing: because, for better or for worse, it served as a personality, or a 'voice' for this website, that would be commented on and reposted on other websites - rather than the present status quo with no frontpage, and GBS being a swamp of multiple-thousand-page-long megathreads featuring content reposted from other websites. What's your take?

Its these sorts of posts that keep me away from much of the forums. Righteously slaying strawmen, smugly mocking any potential critics. Hardly unique to SA, it is found everywhere online to some extent. But on SA there are threads that don't have this, which I attribute partly to the BBCode forum. When posts are algorithmically sorted or ranked by popularity these sorts of posts rise to the top because they invite aggressive agreement or disagreement. On this sort of forum it is at least possible to have long term discussions where actual ideas are presented and where others are engaged and willing to critique or contribute, etc. Actual discussions may not be common but at least they're possible here, as opposed to somewhere like Twitter where they are not.

Relaxing the rules and making things edgier was basically every single one of Lowtax's ideas for shaking up the forums, and look how those all turned out.

there was literally one specific form of "naughtiness" that was proven to be a major attractor to the forums: piracy

like i dont know what kind of "naughty humor" that is currently prohibited or even frowned on here on SA that would bring people here if it was allowed, because there are currently a million places all over the internet where you can find every possible take on edgy humor, there's nothing unique or compelling about that at all.

also pretty sure the reason the front page isnt a thing is because no one is putting any effort into running it and coming up with a program to pay writers a competitive rate and so on. nothing to do with naughty jokes

They've given up on trying to get LLMs to give them the okay to say naughty words, and so they've set themselves a smaller goal of trying to get SA to approve of it.

It seems to me that, 20 years ago, these forums were less gay than they are now. So I made a graph to provide a visual aid regarding the increase in gayness that I believe has occurred on these forums over time. Because of this increased gayness, it seems that certain words that were considered to be okay to use on these forums in the past are not considered to be okay to use on these forums now. It seems to me that this increased gayness is apparent across many different subforums and is not confined to any specific subforum in particular.

A lot of places seem gayer now, not just the Something Awful Forums. And some folks seem to want to fight for the advancement of gayness and some folks seem to want to fight for the suppression of gayness. Will folks' desire to fight about gayness have an impact on the future of these forums in general and this thread in particular? Perhaps.

You might be on to something. It appears that an increase in gayness translates to a decrease in pedophile mods. I'm phone posting, someone graph it.

the sort of discussions that used to take place on BB boards have largely moved to Discord servers

SA doesn't have algorithmic ranking for posts, but then again the posterbase/mods for some of the forums also don't have a great deal of tolerance for dissenting opinions either over the last couple of years. And the same people keeps arguing with each other in circles over the course of years have produced a lot of personal emnities which are...distracting to say at least.

It's not really a good place to have discussions.

Another disadvantage is that SA is almost 100% English monolingual, which means the information available are heavily limited especially when discussing international events.
