I haven’t followed any of the ups and downs for writers since the last strike (Hence the strike, I assume) so would you mind filling me in on where Netflix plays in this? I haven’t had an account in forever, but I guess they are not paying royalties to writers in the shows they license to stream? Is it something else?

Here are the basics, it's less about what Netflix specifically does, but what streaming does:

quote:

The existing contract between studios and the Writers Guild of America, which expires at 12:01 a.m. Pacific time on Tuesday, sets minimum weekly pay for certain television writer-producers at $7,412. (Agents for experienced writers can negotiate that up.) One problem, according to the guild, involves the number of weeks writers work in the streaming era.

Because of streaming, the network norms of 22, 24 or even 26 episodes per season have mostly disappeared. Most streaming series are eight to 12 episodes long. As a result, the median writer-producer works nearly 40 weeks on a network show, according to guild data, but only 24 weeks on a streaming show, making it difficult to earn a stable paycheck.

Residuals have also been undercut by streaming. Before streaming, writers could receive residual payments whenever a show was resold — into syndication, for overseas airing, on DVD. But global streaming services like Netflix and Amazon have cut off those distribution arms.

Instead, streaming services pay a fixed residual. Writers say there is no way to know whether those fees are fair because services hide viewership data. A new contract, guild leaders have said, must include a formula for paying residuals based on views.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/30/business/media/hollywood-writers-strike.html

And meanwhile, most broadcast companies are saddled with debt, but still very profitable, so wall street is like BAD - I DON'T SEE EXPONENTIAL GROWTH. So there's been a strike needed for a while now.

Once valued at $5.7B, and Disney was going to potentially buy it for $3B, and management turned it into $0. Disney and Fox already wrote off the money they did put in, which is pretty funny.

The only way congress can do anything is by getting 2/3rds of the senate to be non-republican.

There are 11 current republican senators up in 2024. If all of them flip, the senate will be 62-38. That's enough to pass laws but not enough to impeach.

Republican seats up in 2024: Florida, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska x2, North Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming.

I'm generally preoccupied with the concept of the "point of no return" in our political stuff. Not necessarily that things can't ever be fixed after that mythical point, but it basically becomes impossible to not fix it. The American system always yields work-arounds, or different ways to tackle problems, eg: Congress passes a law, supreme court overturns, Congress passes identical law once again with a teensy tweak, etc. But sometimes, the work-arounds just kinda run out.

I'm thinking 2016 was one of those points of no return. That cemented a 6-3 majority that can just go "these new ethics laws are unconstitutional because lol". And naturally, a Congress that would actively attack a runaway court (pulling funding, repeatedly passing laws, subpoenas, investigations, etc) is... not a Congress we've had or will have anytime soon.

Guess I'm entitled to a doomer post every now and then! But, here's to hoping the Proud Boys got a guilty verdict that's about to be read!

He was likely expecting a warm welcome in Ireland, but had to hire his own bagpipers for the tarmac arrival and police outnumbered supporters. He likely left because he was having a sad.

His defense attorney has constantly been saying he wouldn't testify, and even rested his defense. So, the judge, already annoyed with Donnie's mouth diarrhea, decided to give Donnie one more chance to testify and putting said chance on record. https://twitter.com/SenatorDurbin/status/1654498694920560644?t=53nmnn1zZdpchTQ7AIUs-g&s=19

Because Durbinism is "oh gee this is really bad, the Supreme Court should fix itself because we sure can't do it with our current powers".

The correct response is spotlighting and campaigning. Show everyone that will listen that the courts are corrupt as hell. Show everyone that the courts are corrupt as hell and Republicans made them that way. Subpoena everyone even slightly involved. If your subpoenas get blocked, go on every single political show you have access to and complain. If nobody shows up, have hearings with empty chairs with a judicial robe in front of them.

Run ads during campaign season that this all changes with more/proper Democrats in charge. Mention that these corrupt fuckers took away your right to choose and a Republican president is going to nominate more like them. Actually loving do something to change overall public opinion and have a long-term strategy for correcting a captured court.

Because right now, their solution isn't quite fundraising, but it's seeing they're hosed short term and doing nothing to fight for an unfucked medium/long term. They're just cowering and asking for the kicking to stop.

Edit: a good example is Michigan. Democrats have been hosed for decades, made a long-term plan, gave a list of poo poo they'd fix in power, won from higher-than-normal turnout, then promptly went about fixing the poo poo they said they would. Proving that you'll fight gets you the votes to actually change poo poo. Senators are just pre-emptively rolling over.
