well it gets stupider

they lost a lot of european countries to netflix because of the insane segmentation of video available through all of these crazy services. netflix (at the time) at least felt like everyone was watching the same stuff across the world

i guess the greatest irony is that europeans finally benefit from not getting the latest from the us, which means we keep the original hbo app for now

GODDAMN HBO Nordic was such a loving nightmare to use.

HBO Max is slightly better, however they just…stopped airing What We Do In The Shadows midway through the last season for two weeks, for no reason! So we were two weeks behind but don’t worry, the WWDITS social media accounts spoiled a major plot point when it aired in the US.

Hell even S1 of The Mandalorian was a loving shitshow outside of the US. We got the first season nearly a year after it aired because….????? So it was cool we could watch Baby Yoda Mania from a distance and never got to enjoy watching the show as it aired for the first season. What gets me is that ever since, it’s aired the same schedule here as the US, like I get if you had to negotiate rights for other properties outside of the US but Disney why the gently caress would you just delay your Massive IP Show a year because of it.

In the increasingly mega-merged and hedgefundified Hollywood, these companies live or die on their quarterly earnings reports. It only takes one bad quarter for their stock price to plunge, putting the company and the CEO’s job in jeopardy.

But their stock prices are holding steady, right? Right. For now. Because our industry is a pipeline that starts with writers. The TV and movies they’re releasing now are shows we started making for them 4-12 quarters ago. But what happens when that pipeline runs dry?
What happens is they run out of product. No new shows in streaming to drive and sustain subscribers. No new shows in broadcast and ad-supported to bring in ad revenue.

No shows, no money.

No money, bad earnings report.

Bad earnings report, bye-bye stock price. Bye-bye CEO.
After 70+ days with no writers to create their product for them, the pipeline is running dry.

Their stock price isn’t tanking yet. But if they don’t make a deal with us, it will.

And they know it.
If they make a deal soon, they might be able to weather it. Stretch out releases. Rush some new stuff through.

But the longer they keep us out, the longer that pipeline runs dry, the more unavoidable a catastrophic dip in new high-quality shows becomes.

And they know it.
So yeah, the studios are planting articles in the trades that make it sound like they’re so determined not to pay us the 0.02% of company revenues we’re asking for that they’re willing to hold out forever.

Bullshit.
I’m sure the AMPTP bosses would love to break our union. But they love their jobs more. They love money more. They can’t make that money without us.

And they know it.

Ignore the trades, walk the line, stand together, and win. #WGAStrong

It is IMPRESSIVE how in the bag Hollywood press orgs are for the studios, not even trying to hide it

Tbh maybe it’s time to reevaluate those relics as well

Remind me to never be on the receiving end of a Ron Pearlman verbal beatdown. Hell yeah but Jesus Christ dude, I’d leave town after hearing “there’s a lot of ways to lose your house”.

Netflix renewing Glow and then cancelling it made me just kind of give up on their service.

It’s hard to get interested in trying their new shows if they’re only going be around for two seasons at most.

Iirc COVID also hosed over GLOW as well, which I can totally see, though I don’t think Netflix’s weird “People like this show? Axe it” thing.

Saw nothing but praise for Tuca and Bertie and that show got cancelled real fuckin quick (and then renewed for two seasons at adult swim impressively enough).

There’s a reason why streaming services are cagey with their numbers and boy, the longer it goes on, the more suspicious it seems.

I think with Drew Barrymore, she was just out of her depth, despite her pedigree. Her heart is in the right place but her brain is two towns over. She means well but that bubble of wealth is potent.

While I thought she should have REALLY spoken to the people affected by the strike, her crew, uh literally anyone with an ear to the ground, she did change course and realize that this isn’t the way to go. She owned up to loving up. That is a rare thing, and good on her for doing so.

Bill Maher is not owed a living. Maher is owed absolutely zilch. Anyone can go into YouTube and find an insufferable white man and idiot sycophants who agree with them. Probably with a higher viewership, like it’s not 1999 anymore. If he comes back, who cares? I mean, I didn’t even know he had a show again. What, is Spin City also coming back??
