I read an interesting observation that the execs aren't hip to the fact that thanks to Twitter how much of the revolution has been televised and people see writers and assorted creatives as peoples, if nothing else to see how they dunk on the higher ups.

From Twitter: "TIL that when SAG went on strike in 1960, the writers had already been on strike for five weeks and the studios brought in a federal mediator to find resolution.

Their main issue was residuals and a lack of transparency on the 12-year-old "new medium" of broadcasting."

Hmmm. You know? Hmmm.

And none of this is new. One of the classic examples is Sergeant Slaughter. He built his entire persona on rah rah Marine/American exceptionalism, enough so that Hasbro hired him to be an actual member of the GI joe cartoon/action figures and to be the live action face of it.

When he was done with the cartoon and wanted to come back to wrestling, during Desert Storm, McMahon would only hire him back if he agreed to a heel turn and publicly denounced the US Military in favor of the Iraqi National Guard.

What's funny is of course Sarge didn't serve a single day of active duty so it's basically all, I believe the term is, stolen valor. He even gets twitchy if somebody uses his finishing move the Cobra Clutch and so does his daughter who isn't even a wrestler but is trying to be a Media Personality.

There was a loving pandemic that forced cities to create makeshift morgues. Sorry that seeing Wonder Woman 1984 at a "proper" venue wasn't high on my list.

When I went to see D&D in the theaters, they had this little thing at the beginning where Chris Pine told me that they may fight a lot of monsters and Red Wizards of Thay but me, in the theater, I was the REAL hero for seeing a movie the way it was meant to be seen. Most of the cast had the good decency to look vaguely embarrassed.

The general public is also very aware of the ever-changing and increasingly lovely streaming landscape, and how the streaming business model is affecting their viewing habits. Older network shows move from platform to platform, Netflix notoriously cancels their own shows no matter how passionate the fans are.

I mean, 1899 was Netflix’s #2 most watched show for 3 consecutive weeks when it debuted, and then they cancelled it 2 months later. It’s insane. If people watching a show doesn’t make it successful, then what the gently caress defines success anymore? And why would a viewer invest any time into a show if even the most popular shows are at risk for cancellation at any time, just because they don’t hit some arbitrary metric set by an algorithm?

Viewers are definitely frustrated at the business, and I’m seeing lots of public support for the writers from average people (aside from the chuds who think everyone who works in TV is automatically a zillionaire).

And now shows are just being memory holed out of nowhere and seemingly at random.

And that was irrespective of whatever terrible quality it might have had or the shitstorm around it during its debut from anime fans and chuds alike (though I repeat myself).

Yeah, I used to think it was the budget that torpedoed a show and I guess it might still be but who honestly knows? That Gabriel Iglesias show couldn't have had a huge budget and it got the axe and people seemed to like it in that generically inoffensive sitcom sort of way.
