Three weeks ago I stumbled on the link to the PsychOdyssey documentary somewhere on the forums.

After binging it in just over a week, I'm desperate for more good behind the scenes/documentary style content about game development!

Shorts, feature length, podcasts, whatever. Feel free to post them here - I can't get enough!

There's just *so much* out there it's a bit overwhelming for me to try to wade through. I'm looking primarily for actual development stuff and not really reviews, etc.

Moving Pictures:

PsychOdyssey - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRlI72bsNRc

Double Fine has an in-house documentary team (2 Player Productions) who captured the entire 7 year experience of making PsychoNauts 2.

It's 32 episodes long (ranging from 30 mins to 1 hour per ep) and worth every minute. Really intense deep dive into the process.

They also have one on Broken Age, I believe as well as some other content.

Masterpieces: Jet Set Radio Future - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xlCXfikMTM

90 minute documentary on the making of JSRF

Declassified series from NESComplex - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0rcIjXh1J14vE9XrvtVvCKfFs0GfGhpJ
Not quite "making of" but a fun look at some of the odd histories behind some NES/SNES classics.

NoClip Documentaries - https://www.youtube.com/@NoclipDocs

A wide and varied collection of docos and BTS conversations.

GDC Postmortems - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2e4mYbwSTbbiX2uwspn0xiYb8_P_cTAr

A look back at the development of classic and modern games.

What Happened? - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJdyZRNyk92o4AxWF2Yu_0t3NWib1v8yX

A look back at troubled games that may... or may not! have turned out poorly. It's to videogames what "What Went Wrong?" is for movies.

Podcasts:

I'm less familiar with the podcast arena for game dev stuff - literally just diving in today. So these are some that seem legit.

Humans Who Make Games w/Adam Conover
- https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/humans-who-make-games-with-adam-conover/id1432764935

Hasn't been updated since 2020, but seems to have some great guests.

The Debug Log - https://the-debug-log.simplecast.com/

Coffee with Butterscotch - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/coffee-with-butterscotch-a-game-dev-comedy-podcast/id981361117

Seems to be ongoing and recommended via some reddit threads.

Game Dev Advice - https://www.gamedevadvice.com/

Updated regularly, listened to one episode... seemed interesting.

Game Dev Field Guide - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/game-dev-field-guide/id1501991718

Listened to an episode, hosts weren't particularly thrilling but the guest (Godot founder) seemed legit.

Game Developer Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/game-developer-podcast/id1476405424

Podcast by the GDC folks about... you guessed it... game development.

What else is out there that is worth watching or listening to?

NoClip have produced a bunch of 30-1.5hr gamedev docos of a pretty good quality:

https://www.youtube.com/@NoclipDocs

Sometimes it will be on a particular developer sometimes about a particular game or franchise.

What Happened? is a great YouTube series by Matt McMuscles going over the development of games that have either turned out poorly or have had an infamously troubled development, and how those usually, but not always, go hand in hand.

While I'd recommend GDC talks generally for insightful looks into game design and development, for behind the scenes stuff specifically check out the GDC postmortems for various classic and modern games.

Oh I love this stuff. I listen to a podcast called "What Went Wrong?" which is the same thing but for movies. They discuss troubled productions (for sometimes flops and sometimes masterpieces).

Ah! This also reminded me there's a "Game Developer Podcast" from the GDC folks. Added both!

Come across another cool channel: People Make Games

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZB6V9fUov0Mx_us3MWWILg

Their latest post (as of 3 hours ago) is a 2.5 hour documentary on the drama behind Disco Elysium - of which I knew none of.
