While I was in jail we would play Monopoly for upwards of 16 hours at a time. Over and over and over. We could fly through it so fast; the math is easy and becomes rote, the banker is effectively just the guy handing out cash as quickly as he can. And the game is so easily scalable that it's super easy to modify; we made our own version using stolen razor blades, contraband cardboard and crayons.

Later in life I just had it printed and it rocks.

Monopoly and Craps are extremely similar, to me. There is "strategy" but it mostly has to do with making good bets, knowing when to mortgage and when to unmortgage, etc.

Whoa nice, that’s interesting you made your own version. A buddy was stuck on a boat for many months and ended up with a hand carved Settlers set.

Monopoly was not a favorite growing up then played a version with friends that introduced the idea of house rules, removed all currency under $20 and each turn was roll, you buying that? No, ok pass the dice. We completed the game in under 15 minutes and I was surprised Monopoly could be fun.

You mess with the crabbo...

My siblings and I drew up our own set of jokey chance and communities chest cards that did things like swap random bills or properties, or get big cash awards from the bank, without the slightest regard for game balance. It made for silly fun, the typical game was over within maybe a half hour, when one player effectively controlled all the money in the game. That's the only way to play monopoly imo.

No, really. The advanced Monopoly algebra that lets pros finish games in 20 minutes leads to the expected value of spite holding properties to be negative. It is a token you need to use at the earliest opportunity to mortgage and/or then trade for something that will actually resolve the game.

A tangled skein of bad opinions, the hottest takes, and the the world's most misinformed nonsense. Do not engage with me, it's useless, and better yet, put me on ignore.

Kind of want to talk about this for a moment.

So we used to call this ironically Monopolocity which sounds like it's a portmanteau with velocity but in fact this doubles or triples the length of the game.

The standard Monopoly rules all apply except now each corner space is divided into two halves; one which forces the player to move along the diagonal path on the next turn and the other which gives the player the option. Each diagonal quadrant is a "district," and the prices scale with Monopoly (i.e. the cheapest property on the diagonal paths is a little more expensive than Boardwalk). There are three properties in each district but for the CASINO district which just has two. Players don't develop on these interior spots; instead, if a player owns a monopoly, the rent on said spaces is multiplied by 10.

There's one new utility, a couple new Chance and Community Chest cards (I think only four, and they just sort of mimic other such cards but in regards to newer properties) -- including the Bankruptcy Lawyer, which is like Get Out of Jail but instead it blocks the umm... the black square which I can't remember what it's called, but if you land on it, you must either mortgage all your properties or give all your money to the Free Parking thing.

If a player owns the middle property, the train thing, this allows other players to move from one railroad to another that they own, but in doing so they must pay the owner of the middle property as well as the rent at the space landed on and the space arriving to, if owned by another player.

There's a couple silly casino stuff that was placed kind of to round out the spaces to keep it consistent, but honestly that part was never really fleshed out. There is a jackpot square, though -- a jackpot is like a D20 that's rolled whenever a player passes go, and once the jackpot is hit, the player earns... ummm... the D20 x 100 or something. Can't remember exactly now. The jackpot square is placed close to the best properties in the game along with bankruptcy court. However, it's only seven spaces from bankruptcy court to Free Parking. So depending on which route you're going, this is a tense situation. But you can also lose everything and get it back on your next turn if you can nail a relatively high-probability number.

The best game we ever played was like a five hour marathon. It came down to two guys, one who basically owned all the perimeter spaces (standard monopoly properties), but the other guy owned all the railroads. By utilizing the free railroads, the guy could manage to evade the deadly final hotel-strewn stretch of the standard board, and the other fellow could manage to get out of having to go down the middle paths. Huge amounts of money started to change hands -- Boardwalk + hotel and Railroad + travel become thousands of dollars. Anyway, I don't remember who won, but it was a really exciting game.

Here is the actual image that was printed. I think there might be a typo in there, but ah well. Also one of the rents had to change because I didn't anticipate you can't divide 5 dollars in half in Monopoly.

edit: I like to think the reason they didn't put Uncle Pennybags in KISS makeup on the box art of the official version is that KISS would sue them.
