So far - search is fine.

Maps is stupid. Searching for an address doesn't give you a map. Clicking on "maps" takes you to the maps page, but not to the address you searched for.

Enjoy being the product :smug:

but seriously I've been slowly moving off of Google, still heavily rely on search, so I'm trying everything. I don't want to bing up my rear end but I also can't fathom paying $300/yr for searching...... although maybe I would if it was something super amazing.

I like the concept, but there's no way those guys have the same resources microsoft has to throw at making bing good

I'm not thrilled about the idea of paying for search but having watched every free service slowly turn to poo poo over the years I don't think it's crazy

sitting at my desk, wearing one of those old timey green tinted visors. I scribble my signature on the check and seal it in the envelope. on my notepad, I cross off “pay for google” and smile contentedly. now to pay the email bill

One of the most important things I do with a search engine is to search for Wikipedia articles. I'm sure you're wondering, why does this chucklefuck need to pay $25 to search Wikipedia? Why use a separate search engine at all, just use the Wikipedia one? That's a topic for another day. In the meantime, Kagi recommends podcasts to me when I very clearly don't want them (and even if I did they are not related to the query).

interesting. not that sure it is even a bad idea, presumably there's some bing search or so at the bottom of it (as building the whole thing is likely impossible), but probably there's a bunch of manual curating you could layer on top if you're actually making money off your customers being satisfied (as opposed to e.g. in practice making more money from the user searching again and again as they're presented with crap).

cowboy beepboop
Feb 24, 2001

yeah apparently. it's bing under the hood, mostly. you don't see nearly as much blogspam and you can hide or demote sites (ie expertsexchange, pintrest, quora etc). the 'lenses' feature to only show results from 'discussions' is handy too. idk I like it. I like being the customer and not the guy who looks at the ads.

underpinned by bing, does not mine your searches, and has the bangs. so it is worst-case equivalent.

e: lacks duckassist though, so if you want your searches shipped to openai without hassle probably better to stick to ddg

Yeah I'm enjoying filtering out garbage domains and knowing that will be retained everywhere I use this (unlike whatever browser extension I need to use with google)
