there's in general a fair few ad-funded services i'd rather pay for. if, notably, i could then also get them from companies not entirely captured by the ad business either way.

i mean i think this is a dumb take, google sucks now and i’d be fine with a couple bucks here and there for better results and filters and theoretically no ads / privacy (also fewer users probably means less attempt at seo but idk)

i use https://www.ecosia.org, which is yet another custom bing instance under the hood, but i like it: actually functional image search, more relevant results than google, etc. the tree-hugging is just something that makes me tolerate their ads.

when you think about it...i'm the first girl you ever spent the night with

Grimey Drawer
So, on a lark, I've started using Kagi as my daily search engine and I cannot loving believe I'm saying this, but I'm sold.

You win Kagi. You get my $5 / month.

I knew Google and Bing suck these days, but I did not realize how much they sucked I guess.

There are features here that have just completely won me over.

First, the results actually seem to try to combat bullshit. You search for hardware benchmarks and userbenchmark is nowhere to be seen. You search for process info, and I can't actually find a spam entry on the list. They did good poo poo here just as a function of trying.

Second, being able to set site priority is a feature I always knew I wanted, but didn't know how much I'd use. Being able to set priority or just block sites is awesome.

Third, you can just turn on and off 'widgets' in your search with no bullshit. It's just a first class feature

Finally, you can setup rules for results. it's regex-adjacent, but you can do it and that is worth it's weight in gold. being able to force all things 'reddit' to 'old.reddit' is great.

So yeah, I dunno. A month ago I found this concept insane but I'm actually now fully sold on this. Come pay for search with me I guess.

Alright so after 674 searches in May, and another 74 in June until they canceled my account for nonpayment, I'm now all over the place, using Bing as my default but using ddg on iphone because that one is always on vpn and bing blocks me.

I hope you all stop using Google and let it loving die.

Great news everyone, they reduced the cost so now it's just :10bux: / mo for unlimited searches. I'm thinking about diving back in.

hmmmm. honestly if it were $5/mo i’d probably do it right now. $10 is prolly sign up to try for a month and then cancel. i have no frame to decide how ridiculous my waffling on the price point is
