You see it everywhere... Movies, TV shows, adult movies, ... Basically any form of media where people need to act like they're gaming they can't act with a controller at all! Instead of trying to use the controller in a realistic way, they just start button mashing in a way that makes no sense. I often see them spamming one button like X for an entire scene. They often spam one of the shoulder buttons at the same time. Another thing that seems common is shaking with the controller like it's some sort of Wii remote and I rarely see them using the joysticks at all. When they do it obviously makes no sense. It doesn't matter what gender or age they have. Even the stereotypical 20 year old guy would still do these same things like they've never seen a controller before. This bothers me so much... You could have the most amazing high budget blockbuster movie and they would still not care about how normal people use a controller! Is it so hard to pull off or does nobody care?

Because when actors aren’t making millions of dollars at work they spend their free time having sex and being beautiful and being lavished with praise instead of figuring out the authentic button combo to do the triple hadouken I think

it's because in those pornos where someone is playing xbox they're not actually playing a game for real (otherwise the camera would show the tv, where the real interesting action is taking place)
|
# ? May 9, 2023 19:24 |

Because they aren't actually playing games while acting in a scene. The controller is functionally just a prop and they have other things to concentrate on like remembering lines or being melodramatic.

I mean, lots of them are bad at acting lile they are driving a car when they (I assume) have lots of experience driving a car. It's probably a combination of them needing to focus on all the traditional aspects of "acting" added to the artificialness of trying to drive without all the usual stimuli involved with driving, plus the viewer understands the conciets of the production of visual media, even if they are pedants. It's sort of like how mime-ing the jerk off motion is evocative and symbolic, not a realistic 1:1 motion-study demonstration of someone cranking their invisible hog.

It's because actually playing the video game is too distracting apparently OP, they tried it for Shaun of the Dead and kept flubbing lines because Simon Pegg got too into playing Timesplitters during the shoot.

Coincidentally my brother was complaining to me yesterday about a scene in Breaking Bad where Jesse and Brock play Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing with Dreamcast controllers when the game never came out in that console. In return I shared with him a similar grievance about the scene where Jesse plays id Software’s RAGE with a light gun when the game was in fact a normal FPS. Boy I sure hope they fired their videogame consultant for those blunders

I'm actually curious how I'd look trying to mimic playing a videogame when there's nothing onscreen. So much of that poo poo is muscle memory that I usually have to mime things out when I'm asked how to do something in a game.
