A series of gambling scandals have popped up over the last couple weeks in multiple states and sports

It started with news that Ohio had suspended betting on University of Alabama baseball, of all things:

quote:

Ohio gambling regulators on Monday instructed the state's licensed sportsbooks to halt betting on college baseball games involving Alabama after suspicious wagering activity was detected on the Crimson Tide's game against top-ranked LSU on Friday.

Turns out that Alabama's coach was telling someone in Ohio to bet on the game (presumably against his team, since they were getting their rear end kicked at the time):

quote:

Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon was fired Thursday amid a widespread investigation into suspicious betting activity on the Crimson Tide's game against LSU six days ago.

Sportsbook surveillance video indicated that the person who placed the bets was communicating with Bohannon at the time, multiple sources with direct information about the investigation told ESPN.

All very bad, of course. Then a few days later the state of Iowa throws its collective hat into the ring:

And, today, Colorado Rapids player Max Alves was suspended:

quote:

The Colorado Rapids suspended winger Max Alves on Wednesday in connection with alleged unlawful sports gambling, a source with knowledge of the situation told ESPN. The Rapids released a statement announcing a player had been suspended but did not identify him: "We are aware of the reports regarding a Colorado Rapids player in connection with unlawful sports gambling. We take matters of this nature seriously and seek at all times to protect the integrity of the game.

A report from Brazilian outlet O Globo links Alves to the investigation in Brazil and appears to show that he was paid $12,000 by an organization to receive a yellow card in a match against the LA Galaxy on Sept. 17, 2022, which he did roughly 90 seconds after entering the game as a substitute.

Who knows how far this will go, but I feel like we are not even close to the end of the beginning, and lots more colleges especially will end up in this list due to the proliferation of gambling and the fact that it has been embraced by both pro and college leagues via adds and even displaying odds during broadcasts. How would you expect some college kid somewhere not to try to make money when you do poo poo like this:

And just as I went looking to snarkily suggest a thread title change for the NCAA Baseball thread...

the wildest fact reported about the Alabama coach was where the person he called to place the bets was (from that ESPN article linked above):

quote:

The alleged suspicious activity took place Friday at the sportsbook at the Great American Ball Park, according to the Ohio Casino Control Commission.

oh, you mean the Cincinnati Reds' ballpark, literally on Pete Rose Dr.? :haw:

of course, it may have been easy to spot as well:

quote:

Regular-season college baseball does not typically attract significant betting interest or large wagers. FanDuel said it didn't take a single bet on the game, and other sportsbooks also reported minimal betting on it.

yikes.
