I like the Roberta Flack original well enough but the Fugees absolutely exploded the airwaves in the 90s with their cover to the point that it's pretty ubiquitous, kinda like how "I Will Always Love You" became ingrained in pop culture as Whitney Houston's biggest hit while lots of people probably aren't aware it's a cover of Dolly Parton's original song

Hell, I'm pretty sure I remember Dolly Parton gave an interview one time where she was like "yeah that's 100% her song now"

e: for actual content and since we're talking about the nineties, how about Limp Bizkit's cover of "Behind Blue Eyes" complete with inexplicable robot voice

you just reminded me that limp bizkit also did a terrible cover of faith lol

How about Weezer’s cover of Toto’s “Rains of Africa”? That felt completely unnecessary imo, and I really like weeper (blue album and Pinkerton at least)

yeah terrible cover. for a start africa had already been a bit of a popular meme song for a while and they were late to covering it, had already been played to death. and then second of all it was a pointless cover because it was basically the same but with some distorted power chords under the chorus.
