I've been hoarding random junk from shot-down enemy ships in X4. You can use them to upgrade your ships, bit I haven't done much of that, really.I even hired some cheapo poo poo-kicker to fly around a warzone for me, hoovering up all the bits and bobs, before making regular trips back to drop them off for me. He was doing real well until he was eventually killed!  (I should really hire another, just in case I need that junk later...)
