Disclaimer:
Fundraising in this thread is only to be used for accredited charities. The SA forums, staff, and posters bear no responsibility for the donations. This thread also doesn’t reflect any endorsements from the website at large.

This forum has demonstrated again and again that as much as we love :justpost:, we also actively do good in our communities. I know for a fact many of you do mutual aid and charity work, others work in fields that directly help the vulnerable people in :capitalism:, and of course, we’ve also enabled people to oppose the electoral right wing.

It’s also just flat out important to harness and coordinate the weird little community and social mores we’ve fostered here in order to use the most of its potential. There’s a big difference between a forum like this and normie social media.

Therefore, I wanted to make a thread that highlights these efforts (I can edit this and the next post over time to reflect new efforts), and points people in the right directions to affect change. Whether this be for fundraising, volunteering, sharing resources (I have a ton of fundraising, organizing, and similar documents at this point, that I am more than willing to share or teach people best practices to use), or just advice on how to navigate the hell of Action Network (which has a UI so bad that a friend once said she thinks it is a CIA op to give leftists brain damage).

Finally, to be clear, this thread is not equivalent to efforts in the past centered on helping individual posters here. That’s a separate topic that deserves its own attention.

Please PM me or simply post if you have something to add, and I will accommodate you.

Innocence Project of Delaware
Donate here

If you’re not familiar with the The Innocence Project, it is a non-profit organization entirely focused on exonerating people who were wrongfully convicted. Since 1992, it has done so successfully more than 240 times.

In Delaware, the branch is new, and like a lot of progressive things in DE, it is understaffed, under-resourced, and under-funded. Simply put, Delaware’s fundraising culture is not at all like other areas. In the past, it operated in the context of an informal patronage system, wherein DuPonts would take on pet causes like liege lords. Even that has mostly stopped though, and the current rich of Delaware are not particularly inclined to back most causes.

The unfortunate reality is that pro bono legal work is immensely expensive. A single preparation of court documents is roughly $100, a court transcript request is $500, and a DNA test is $10,000. DNA tests are particularly crucial tools for proving innocence, as Delaware has previously used “hair comparisons” (which are basically junk science) to convict people after it mistook cat hair for human hair. And the hair comparisons are used when Delaware isn’t convicting people based on psychic testimony (yes, for real).

With so few resources, and no previous grounding in the state, the local branch is now examining cases going back to 1979 and has an immense backlog of work to tackle. Therefore, I am helping them raise $15,000 by the end of the summer to cover basic administrative costs. The $15,000 will not even touch the funds they’ll need to hire people soon, but it’s a start and it will keep them operational.

I am involved because I want to use my future degree in law to continue to do activist work, and help people. There’s no point living in this nation if you aren’t going to try to give people hope and materially change their lives. And there’s really no better way to do that than donating to this branch. The work they’ve already done gave a second chance to a man who was Delaware’s youngest death row inmate (at 18 years old), but only after he was tortured by solitary confinement by the state for twenty years. When this work doesn’t get done, in the 2004 case of Cameron Todd Willingham, it ends in tragedy as he was only exonerated posthumously after his murder by execution state sponsored murder.

If you can, please help Innocence Project Delaware reach the $15,000 goal, by donating here.

:siren:Currently 28 May 2023, Innocence Project has raised $7,199 out of $15,000. C-SPAM has raised $1,475 of this total.:siren:

Finally, those who donate certain amounts are entitled to different gifts of gratitude (with more to come possibly). If you want a gift, please post a receipt (with personal information left out). These include:

-Every $50, a movie review of your choice by a local film expert, wherein he answers if the movie is “Socialist or not?”
-Every $100, fellow goon, and all round nice guy and Delaware organizing expert, Pillow Face, will write you a thirty second song on a topic of your choice.

GBS Thread with more info
Crohn's and Colitis of Canada
Donate

TheKingofSprings is running to destroy their body for a good cause. If you want to physically harm a fellow Goon while helping to fight a terrible autoimmune disease, please donate.

In their words, here's why you should:

TheKingofSprings posted:

For those who don't know, Crohn's is an autoimmune disease which causes your body to begin aggressively attacking itself, generally focused on the digestive system but also able to attack other areas from your mouth to your joints and straight down to your butthole. Relatives include colitis and the symptoms caused can have a range of names. In addition to profuse bleeding and pain Crohn's can cause strictures and adhesions where the intestines narrow and can even stop the passage of food, requiring surgical treatment often consisting of removal of some or all of the digestive system if the patient doesn't want to die quickly and painfully from a rupture and sepsis.

Why are you doing this?

The long and short of it is, Crohn's sucks. 2 years ago I had to choose between a temporary ostomy and probable death from an intestinal rupture, and it made my life pretty lovely for a year. If through raising money I can stop other people from needing to go through the same thing then it's incredibly worthwhile to me. Nobody should have to go through that if I can do anything to help it.

I started doing the Gutsy Walk this year to raise money and awareness for Crohn's disease, but started later than I intended. I am not satisfied that I have done all I can, which is why I wanted to do more.

OK, so what value will my money provide?

Your donation will support Crohn's research and help fund and find better treatment options and, hopefully, a cure for the disease. Doctors and researchers are continuously learning more about Crohn's with each passing year and their efforts have already paid off significantly. Immunosuppressants and biologic drugs have done wonders for treatment compared to a few decades ago, but the drugs can be expensive and painful to administer. Every dollar will go a long way to improving outcomes for those with the disease.

Other than that though, if you were wanting an additional incentive, I will run. For every 5 Canadian dollars donated I plan to run 1 mile. I will run as much as I am reasonably able to work towards the accumulated miles. My plan is to update the thread frequently to show my progress using a treadmill and mileage counter for indoor and outdoor running. My intent from the start of this has been that I would run the total amount of miles before the end of the year, and failing that I would be permabanned. :toxx: I am able to count by 5s just well enough to recognize the very likely outcome from this is the fundraiser is successful. Even if I fail and am banned, I intend to run until all the miles are covered. For me this isn't just about a fundraiser, this is also about getting fit. Prior to COVID I was on the verge of really getting fit for the first time until 2 years of pandemic isolation and a temporary ostomy decided otherwise. My weight slingshotted from about 190 to 165 and I'm now somewhere around 210. I don't like this and I want to do something about it.

What proof can you give that you won't just run off with the money to live on a private island?

Well, aside from running being the point of this, donations are done through the charity's own widget and go straight to the fundraiser. All donations are easy to track and can have a name attached or be anonymous. I'm not sure about the exact donation deadline but from what I understand it does run a little past the official date of the Crohn's walk of June 4, 2023. As of this posting, 1468.00 Canadian Dollars have already been raised thanks to people's amazing support.

Aside from that, this thread can be to discuss people's fitness goals and tips, Crohn's disease, or general health and wellness in addition to anything else people think it would a useful outlet for. I will answer any and all questions people have about Crohn's disease, what living with an ostomy can be like, or other related stuff as best as I am able. If other people are interested, I can set up a team so that other people can join in and fundraise either by walking or running. If anyone has tips or suggestions for running fundraising or the format of this thread I would appreciate it greatly.

So donate now, destroy my knees and sandblast me with your dollars for a good cause!

When will someone put a stop to my villainy?

By the way, the good news is IP of DE just needs $9,286 more to reach the goal for the end of summer so the first few weeks have went beyond expectations. Bad news is, I'm definitely reaching my limits on DE donors.

updates on IPDE:

We're at $6,114 total with $1,325 coming from here. The general form is at $1,664, and the rest has been checks and donations directly through their website.

The first $100 gift is coming soon. People who want the others can request them. Stretch goal is being worked on, and the $250 tier is also being worked on.

Thank you for supporting them. I got to 40% in two weeks which was much quicker than anticipated.

Just updating to say we're at $7,199 out of the $15,000 for Innocence Project Delaware, but in actuality it might be around $9,000 now depending on when some pledges come in. I'm on track to meet their goal two months early, by the end of June.

So if people want custom songs or whatever other gifts I come up with, please donate. Pillow Face's first request was completed, and his next one, about emfive's subject choice of "garlic" (????????????) is being worked on.
