The world of amateur cartoon pornography is so vast and depraved that I can barely imagine any serious, good-faith attempt to crack down on it, especially by a country like this one. That is one very unlucky deviant.

That said, I have seen folks familiar with internal media stuff (like Mic 'brokenbottleboy' Wright) dropping heavy hints that Schofield is a mega-predator who's receiving the same kind of legal and institutional protection that folks like Nick Cohen did/do. A lot of nudge-nudge wink-wink 'if we said this stuff outright the British media would do everything in their considerable power to add us to the homeless suicide statistics' stuff. Apparently some NDAs are expiring this month, which may change things enough to justify everyone carefully, politely trying to distance themselves from him while protecting their own reputations as best they can.

It definitely seems like we're in the awkward holding phase where a lot of media insider types are indicating that Schofield is a gigantic sexmonster who's the beneficiary of heavy institutional and legal protection, but can't repeat specific allegations against him because he's the beneficiary of heavy institutional and legal protection, and therefore anyone who sticks their head above the parapet will be flayed alive (metaphorically and possibly literally) to send a message. Not the first time that's happened in this country or in this industry, and we know that it's a status quo that can hold for a depressingly long time.

The coverage seems to indicate that Fred Barclay's financial problems are nothing to do with the Telegraph and Spectator, which are instead considered his most desirable and profitable assets by the vultures circling his almost-corpse. His legion of ghouls are going to be fine, and may indeed end up better off as a result of this. Instead, he's apparently been adopting the Trump/Musk strategy of 'never pay anyone anything unless they bring along their lawyers' for years, and, well, Lloyds Bank brought along their lawyers. Frankly seems kind of daft to assume that he had no relationship to British intelligence services prior to then, given that he ended up becoming an asset to them in a foreign war after running a training camp on British soil. Given how suddenly they popped up and how well-equipped they are, I think it's a fair guess that the border insurgency was Western intelligence agencies activating their existing assets in the region. I know we've had a long string of similar stories, and that's exactly why I think we need to step back and contemplate for a moment how absolutely insane it is that Starmer's election campaign for 2024 seems to consist of explaining to the British electorate in detail how he will do nothing whatsoever to help them or make their lives more pleasant. Just a long, grinding effort to make the country's largest opposition party irrelevant/hostile to its interests.

I buy the cheapest pair of black trousers and a white shirt from Asda the once in a blue moon I have to “dress up” and then immediately cram it in the back of a wardrobe or drawer somewhere never to be thought of again.

If it’s not an occasion I can just wear shorts and a t-shirt it can gently caress off for the most part, tbh.

I have a similar philosophy, except that I just stick with jeans/cargo shorts and button-up shirts (long or short-sleeved depending on the weather) because they're both smart enough and casual enough for pretty much any social situation. T-shirts are for the gym.

Like, the retraction isn't going to matter, just lie and say you'll do it and then don't. Nobody's going to go "ah well they said they wouldn't so that means I can't be mad" if you don't give people what they want they're still gonna loving hate you once you're in government.

It actually seems to be a bizarre form of campaigning. The act of withdrawing pledges is itself a demonstration of how sensible, pragmatic, and untethered from ideology you are. They've been doing it non stop for years, I can't see how it doesn't just make them seem like you should assume anything they say will be retracted within a day or so.

Exactly. They're the party of sober, serious debate and careful cost analysis, not blind ideology, which is why it is in fact cool and good for them to do gently caress-all except funnelling money to their mates. I think that most of us would be reasonably satisfied with Osborne getting carted off to The Hague. Absent that being a realistic possibility, though, you are absolutely going to get people hungering for more direct and feasible forms of justice.

I am certainly not calling for the assassinations of senior political figures (hi, mods!), but the unfortunate reality is that if you want vigilante violence against your country's elite to lose its popular appeal, you're going to have to provide some other effective, reliable means by which they can be held to account for vast and heinous human rights abuses. This is especially relevant in the current political climate, where all major players appear to be determined to reduce their public appeal as much as possible while removing any meaningful, useful official systems of accountability, and while I again do not endorse or encourage political assassination as a tactic, I can't help but grimly wonder which one of these chuckleheads is going to get themselves capped first.
