A few days ago I brought up the true fact that since the introduction of the Premier League in 1992, when the old first division became the second tier (still confusingly called division one for a bit), all so-called 'league titles' won since then are fraudulent and invalid. Leeds United won the last top-flight Division One Championship in 1991/92, and are therefore still true and rightful champions of England until the long running 30 year vanity competition goes bust (any day now) With this in mind I thought I'd dive into the stats to see who the champs would be if the true league title changed hands with wins like a boxing championship, if we had any repeat winners or record reigns. For the purposes of this statistical rummage a team loses the title with a defeat to any team in any league or cup competition (friendlies don't count largely because it's hard to find data on these and I cba). Once we get up to present day we can start tracking it on a regular basis so will look to get this up to date by the start of the season. Also I know I could just type in 'who is the lineal champion of England' and get an answer going back to the 1800s but that's cheating. 1992/93 season Leeds United start the season as title holders. They: - beat Liverpool 4-3 in the charity shield on 8th August 1992 (charity shield counts we all love the charity shield - beat Wimbledon 2-1 on 15/8 - draw 1-1 against Aston Villa on 19/8 - lose 4-1 to Middlesbrough on 22/8 (4 title matches, 14 day reign) Middlesbrough - Lose 2-1 to Southampton on 29/8 (1 title match, 7 day reign) Southampton - draw 1-1 with Liverpool on 1/9 - lose 1-0 to Norwich on 5/9 (2 title matches, 7 day reign) Norwich City - beat Chelsea 3-2 on 12/9 - beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 on 19/9 - draw 2-2 with Carlisle United in the League Cup 2nd round on 22/9 - draw 1-1 with Coventry City on 26/9 - lose 7-1(!) to Blackburn Rovers on 3/10 (5 title matches, 28 day reign) Blackburn Rovers - beat Huddersfield Town 4-3 after extra time in an FA Cup 2nd round replay on 6/10 - draw 0-0 with Aston Villa on 19/10 - draw 0-0 with Manchester United on 24/10 - draw 0-0 with Sheffield Wednesday on 31/10 - lost 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur on 7/11 (5 title matches, 35 day reign) Tottenham Hotspur - drew 0-0 with Aston Villa on 21/11 - beat Manchester City 1-0 on 28/11 - lost 2-0 to Nottingham Forest in the League Cup 4th Round on 2/12 (3 title matches, 25 day reign) Nottingham Forest - beat Leeds United 4-1 on 5/12 - lost 2-1 to Aston Villa on 12/12 (2 title matches, 10 day reign) Aston Villa - lost 1-0 to Ipswich Town in the League Cup 4th Round replay on 15/12 (1 title match, 3 day reign) Ipswich Town - beat Norwich City 2-0 on 21/12 - drew 0-0 with Arsenal on 26/12 - beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 on 28/12 - lost 2-1 to Oldham Athletic on 9/1/93 (4 title matches, 25 day reign) Oldham Athletic - lost 3-0 to Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup 3rd round replay on 12/1 (1 title match, 3 day reign) Tranmere Rovers - beat Oxford United 4-0 on 15/1 - lost 4-1 to Ipswich Town in the FA Cup 4th Round on 23/1 (2 title matches, 11 day reign) Ipswich Town - 2nd reign - beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 on 27/1 - beat Manchester United 2-1 on 30/1 - lost 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup quarter final on 3/2 (3 title matches, 11 day reign) Sheffield Wednesday - beat Everton 3-1 on 6/2 - beat Blackburn Rovers 4-2 in the League Cup semi final first leg on 10/2 - beat Southend United 2-0 in the FA Cup 5th round on 13/2 - beat Crystal Palace 2-1 on 20/2 - beat Manchester City 2-1 on 23/2 - drew 1-1 with Liverpool on 27/2 - lost 1-0 to Coventry City on 3/3 (7 title matches, 28 day reign) Coventry City - lost 1-0 to Everton on 7/3 (1 title match, 4 day reign) Everton - lost 2-1 to Chelsea on 10/3 (1 title match, 3 day reign) Chelsea - drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace on 15/3 - drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur on 20/3 - drew 1-1 with Leeds United on 24/3 - beat Middlesbrough 4-0 on 3/4 - drew 1-1 with Ipswich Town on 6/4 - lost 1-0 to Southampton on 10/4 (6 title matches, 31 day reign) Southampton - 2nd reign - lost 5-2 to Sheffield Wednesday on 12/4 (1 title match, 2 day reign) Sheffield Wednesday - 2nd reign - lost 2-1 to Arsenal in the League Cup final on 18/4 (1 title match, 6 day reign) Arsenal - drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest on 21/4 - drew 0-0 with Everton on 1/5 - drew 0-0 with QPR on 4/5 - lost 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday on 6/5 (4 title matches, 18 day reign) Sheffield Wednesday - 3rd reign - lost 1-0 to Blackburn Rovers on 8/5 (1 title match, 2 day reign) Blackburn Rovers end the season as FLHW champions (their second title win), and as per the rules that I am making up as I write this post they will retain the title through the summer of '93 to next season. In one season of football we've had more title winners than in 30 years of the so-called 'Premier' so-called 'League'. Stay tuned for the next thrilling instalment

I double checked because worldfootball messes the dates up sometimes and their official club website confirms that they played two league matches on back to back days. Christmas fixture pileup in the old days was no joke
