I lied I'm really looking for joists. Stud finder is inconclusive. Strong magnets sticks to everything; pretty sure it's plaster with metal lath. Weaker magnets sort of work. I'm going to get so swole looking at gymnastic rings hanging from my ceiling.

Tap the ceiling with your knuckle and listen to the sound, you should be able to tell where it’s more/less dense and find the center. Hopefully you don’t have an upstairs neighbor though, if you knock 3 times they may think you want them.

I thought I had a broken stud finder from the Home Depot and was real pissed off. All it did was beep. But I realized it wasn't pointing at the wall, I had it turned around, whoops.
