I struggle with this a lot, OP, and what I've landed on after years of awkwardness is to rotate between clearing my throat with a raised fist, pulling up my pants a bit, shuffling around in my pockets as if I'm looking for something important, and brushing my hair or scratching my chin. (Disclaimer: If this rotation is used on too long of a walk in sight of one person or group, it will begin to look weird. Works best in short walks).
