Seems like they�re not too expensive and there�s a lot of stuff to do

A week sailing the ocean eating lots of food, theres entertainment and shopping and stuff sounds pretty cool

But then you also hear people say they�re trashy idk

I like the idea of exploring lots of little islands when you reach a port each day

I've been on exactly 1 cruise with few stops and have a couple thoughts:

� They are pretty trashy. The theme is 'inconsistency'. Everything from the food, to the activities, to the amenities range from 'pretty good' to 'nope'. The normal tickets are cheap for a reason and you should expect to get what you pay for.
� Logistics loving suck. Getting on and off the boat was annoying. It's all the problems with airport logistics, with more people and worse logistics.
� Some of the spectacle is kinda cool. Hanging out in the middle of the Ocean is actually very neat.

Not considering this next point, I'd give a Cruise a 4/10 vacation. It has some neat points, but is marred badly by a lot of the 'jank' and 'trashy' that comes with it. The clientele also sucks. That said...

� Cruises are an environmental disaster

It's a very 'boomer' kind of vacation down to the fact that it's extremely damaging to the world around it and it's clientele of course don't give a gently caress about anything or anyone except themselves.

Environmental considerations aside, I'd still not do another one - maybe the 'premium' experience is better, but the standard ticket is OK at best. Considering it's impact, it's a hard, hard no.

Then there's that video that came out of a single person purportedly having an entire fully staffed cruise ship to himself. That would be freaky.

I only went on one cruise and I didn't enjoy it.

There was this one door that didn't look like any of the other doors on the cruise ship that had a crudely handwritten sign on it which just said "BUGS". After like the 5th time I walked by it, my curiosity got the better of me and I checked to see if the door was locked. It wasn't! I opened it and it was a ~100 square foot room COMPLETELY filled to the roof with spiders! Like those prank videos where someone's office got completely filled with styrofoam packing peanuts. I ran away as soon as my brain processed what was happening and all the spiders came pouring out. I could hear all the screams behind me as I booked it to my room.

By that evening, the ship's captain had pressganged most of the guests into spider removal duty. We'd take pool skimmers and run with them along the decks until they were full of spiders, then try to fling them over the side and into the sea. Most of the time the wind would just blow the spiders back towards the ship, where they'd cling to the side and come back onto the deck more determined than ever.

By day 3 we ceded control of the ship to the spiders. In the end no one survived.

They can be fun if you're willing to spend a lot of money on the nicer cruiselines and excursions, but most people are probably better off just taking a normal vacation to whatever destination. The exception to this might be going to Alaska?

I am personally fascinated with cruise culture and YT cruise content because how lovely the idea of cruising is, yet there is an entire subculture of people who basically do nothing but live cruise-to-cruise. The Disney cruise sub-genre is especially interesting because it combines the shittiness of cruising with the shittiness of Disney for a truly unique poo poo experience.

Take away the fact that it's on a boat and you couldn't possibly sell the idea to me. "Here's what we're going to do, we're going to pack into a huge hotel with tiny rear end rooms, and stay at the hotel the entire time. There are a ton of shops and pools and waterslides and there's a go-cart track and a theatre to watch musicals in, and bars and restaurants everywhere. Just shoulder-to-shoulder waiting in line with total strangers constantly, feasting on heat-lamp-cured cuisine in-between actual meals, shoveling this garbage into our faces and being completely schlocked the entire time. But we never. Leave. The. Hotel. Sounds great, right?!" This sounds like the Platonic ideal of how to waste time and money doing something that is not fun. I don't want to eat cold onion rings and drink watered-down cocktails to kill the hours between restaurant trips, I don't want to tour the little mall on the ground floor again, I don't want to do any of this poo poo. Please let me go home.

Then the reveal: "And it's all on a boat!, the whole thing! I saved the best for last!" Hell no. This is a hundred times worse, now I can't actually leave if I want to? Why would I put myself through this? If there are excursions off of the ship, I'm grabbing a cab and getting as far away from this ship as I can and I'm not coming back. I'm a reverse stow-away.

I watch YT cruise content because I'm trying to discover why other people want to do this, no luck yet.

Well that's my story.

I've done a couple, balcony staterooms every time.

Pros:

eat as much as you want
service is usually great
most good boats usually have whatever you need nearby
go to some neat places (Alaska was the best for me)

Cons:

environmentally unsound to say the least
stops are quick and drop you in a touristy port
everything on and off the boat is designed to take your money
tons of people

It's all right but I'd prefer to actually just go and do something for a week in a single city or something, my cruise days are probably behind me

It's like asking if flying sucks and you are comparing flying on a bargain basement Allegiant flight and first class on Qatar or Singapore airlines with your own private cabin.

Spending $50 a night it is going to be a wildly different experience than $1000 night on a cruise.

I only went on one cruise and I didn't enjoy it.

There was this one door that didn't look like any of the other doors on the cruise ship that had a crudely handwritten sign on it which just said "BUGS". After like the 5th time I walked by it, my curiosity got the better of me and I checked to see if the door was locked. It wasn't! I opened it and it was a ~100 square foot room COMPLETELY filled to the roof with spiders! Like those prank videos where someone's office got completely filled with styrofoam packing peanuts. I ran away as soon as my brain processed what was happening and all the spiders came pouring out. I could hear all the screams behind me as I booked it to my room.

By that evening, the ship's captain had pressganged most of the guests into spider removal duty. We'd take pool skimmers and run with them along the decks until they were full of spiders, then try to fling them over the side and into the sea. Most of the time the wind would just blow the spiders back towards the ship, where they'd cling to the side and come back onto the deck more determined than ever.

By day 3 we ceded control of the ship to the spiders. In the end no one survived.

Sounds like a clear violation of maritime regulations. The emergency spider bulkhead should be clearly marked and require no fewer than 2 independent personnel to open. I hope the chief arachnid officer got sanctioned after he was eaten by spiders.
