Yair lost every moment of every moment in his fight against TKZ right up until he didn't.

Nah, he didn't. TKZ was winning, but it was a pretty back and forth fight that Yair won in the coolest possible way.

Volk vs Yair reminds me a bit of how I felt leading up to GSP vs Condit. Yair can definitely win, as Condit could've, but it's hard to bet against a guy as professional as Volk is and as GSP was.

Yeah, Volk just does not make mistakes. Like...ever.

Robbie Lawler was the guy who got me back into the UFC in a big way. His late career title run was unexpected and awesome and result in three of my favourite fights ever. Me and my wife watched his fight with Condit at a Hooters in Mexico City because we couldn't find anywhere else close by that was showing it and it's one of my absolute favourite MMA memories. I'm genuinely misty eyed at Bob getting to walk off into the sunset on a win, and a spectacular win at that. Dude is one of the true originals in MMA and watching him is like watching no one else. god speed.

Marching Powder posted:

was there a dunc post about a dude paying to be suplexed by large women in motel rooms or am i remembering pornography

A writing project I did at one point was a series of stories set in the porn industry, and as a result, I know quite a lot about fetish pornography. One of the more common ones is 'lift and carry' which is simply large women (like, over six foot) playfully pursuing smaller men and women around a room until they catch them, after which they simply carry them around in various ways. That's the whole thing. There's no sex and often no nudity. So, to answer your question, yes.

Holy poo poo lol this fuckin' rules.

I would prefer if no fighters associated with anyone involved in American politics because holy poo poo seems to exclusively attract the worst loving people.

what's up, fellow guy who loves robbie and wound up at a mexican hooters unplanned

It was such a good fight even the guys who were originally there to watch football ended up watching it. Great loving night.

Also, my wife's very middle class Mexican friends, who'd never watched a fight ever, were a bit taken aback. I jokingly pointed out that Abel Trujillo had quite striking eyes, and they proceeded to comment on every single fighter's eyes. Robbie has kind eyes, which I thought was funny in light of the best Robbie Lawler gif.

I can’t believe a man was once allowed to do enough drugs to come within a judge’s whimsical dart toss of beating GSP and Robbie.

I'm still mad at Hendricks. The version of him at UFC 171 is probably the best Welterweight in the sport up to that point. He finally delivered on all that promise. It all came together. His striking, wrestling, game planning. He even added leg kicks. And he dug deep. I don't agree with the decision, but being able to rally and win the last round after rounds 3 and 4 is bloody impressive. He finally won me over. And then he followed it up by never looking even passable as a fighter ever again.

If you somehow haven't seen this fight, go watch it now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRSavbVM_s4it's genuinely one of the best fights the sport has ever produced. Ideally, show it to someone who has watched very little MMA up to this point.

As for major drop offs, I'd still say it's Hendricks. A lot of those guys lost a physical trait that made them good. Chuck and Moraes' chins utterly went, for instance. Yan's fought high level guys and been hosed over by a bad decision. Barao was clearly mentally broken from the two very sustained beatdowns. Hendricks...just lost it. Every aspect of his game suddenly went. He went from being able to box with Lawler in the pocket to looking confused about what a jab was. He stopped kicking only a fight after he started. He could no longer set up his takedowns or complete them when he shot. His gas tank turned comically bad. Like, literally everything fell apart for him. I don't think any of the others fell apart so consistently across the board. Even before the Thompson knockout, he looked like absolute lukewarm dogshit against Lawler the second time and was terrified to engage against Matt Brown. That was one of the worst instances of 'lay and pray' i can remember. Something snapped in him. I mean, missing weight, really badly, a weight class up, when you're loving 5'9 is completely incomprehensible.

I'd actually like to read a genuinely honest autobiography from him. I wonder if he even knows what happened to him

Ah, he must have heard me when I said he should quit and just stand around being good looking.

I really hope Walt Harris picks up a win. It won't be any consolation for the loss he suffered. Nothing could be. But goddamn, going through that and getting beaten in fights is just an even more depressing double whammy

I started typing this before I saw the cancellation. God loving dammit. To be fair to him, 'family tragedy' is a way more understandable reason to do gear than 'broke my leg two years ago'

There was an update that I've now lost saying that Francis is making 8 figures for the Fury fight, not 8 million.

The whole thing really should have pulled the wool from a lot of people's eyes with regard to how poo poo the UFC actually can be at business. There's some quote from White that 'well, he wants to go take easy fights in boxing for more money' and it's like 'wait, that's an option for your HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION? To make more money in the lower tier of a different sport? And that isn't indicative of a problem with your approach?

You point this out and you get 'well, Francis wasn't a draw' to which the obvious reply is 'Dana is the promoter.' And if you can't make someone like Francis, the absolute platonic ideal of an easily promotable heavyweight fighter, a draw, what the gently caress are you doing in the business? And, if he isn't a draw, why is now signed for an insane amount of money for a sport he's never fought in before?

KSW ended with the commentators labeling Szymon Bajor, who is white and from Poland, "the great white hope" to defeat Phil de Fries, who is white, and from England.

And then de Fries choked Bajor unconscious because Bajor tapped three inches in front of the referee's face and he somehow missed it.

Phil De Fries once knocked himself out running into Matt Mitrione's legs so this story is even more ridiculous than you thougt.

Light Heavyweight is really bad and has been for ages. Even back in the day, when it was full of people who were famous and that you recognised, it was bad. It's just that the fighters were famous enough that you didn't realise it.

Strickland is remarkable for having been an MMA fighter for 15 years, a UFC fighter for 9 years and somehow isn't actually good at any aspect of the sport he's been in for that time.

Bobby Green is a lot better at what he does than he used to. I remember him jawing off and trying to slip and counter as Edson Barboza just kicked him in the head over and over.

In terms of weigh ins though Derrick Lewis looks to be in fantastic shape for him.

This reminds me, for some reason, of Shawn Jordan, who was supposed to be a new breed of athletic heavyweight who could do backflips and was going to dominate. Right up until Cheick Kongo pressed him into the fence for 15 minutes. He talked about how he didn't really bother training much since he'd not noticed much difference in his performance when he did. If that isn't the most heavyweight story I don't know what is.
