Before we start, let me say that this is probably going to be a bad idea.

Most of you are familiar with New Legacy, Inc., a group of streamers who specialize in breaking wrestling video games in ways they were never meant to be broken. They are known for their Royaliest of Rumbles series, in which they sim 30 Royal Rumbles across 30 different games, putting the winners together for one final Royaliest of Rumbles and one Royaliest winner. (They tried a Moneyiest in the Bankiest with far less success). Well one day I was watching said Rumbles and thought to myself “what if someone did that but with G1 Climaxes?” That was several years ago, and after talking myself out of such an endeavor during that time, it’s stuck in my craw long enough for me to take a stab at it myself.

Folks, welcome to the G21 Climax.

I also trust that most of you are familiar with the G1 Climax, New Japan Pro Wrestling’s annual summer event that sets the plate for the remainder of their year leading into the new year’s Wrestle Kingdom event. If you aren’t, it’s taken multiple forms over the years, from a challenge series to a single-elimination tournament, but it’s best known for being a multiple-block round robin tournament that features some of the best wrestling of the year. Multiple MOTY winners and candidates have come out of the G1 in the past decades, and some of the biggest names in the business have taken part, in one way or another.

METHODOLOGY

For this, we’re going to be going with the traditional 2 blocks with 10 men each format, 20 total per tournament, on the basis that it makes the math nice and easy and that I’m not doing this with the multiple blocks of the past few years, this is going to take long enough as is. This means 400 wrestlers will be taking part across the 20 tournaments. 80 of those wrestlers have been declared Aces and will be divided into two per block, so as to not overload one side of a tournament with too much star power and potentially leaving one side with Ronnie Garvin as the biggest name.

I will only be using Fire Pro Wrestling World for Steam, on the basis that I don’t have 20 wrestling games. I have one wrestling game. Also, the amount of created wrestlers for FPWW through the Steam Workshop is truly daunting, from historically accurate creations to just about everyone under a copyright to some things that really shouldn’t be seen. For the sake of consistency I will be using wrestlers created by TheAvenger3, as they have potentially the grandest and fullest selection available and I’d rather not mix and match creations and run the risk that someone’s Toru Yano goes God Mode on everyone and wins every match in 30 seconds with a dick punch and roll up.

As I’m only using the one game, I’ll instead try to use a variety of wrestlers from around the world and time. This will lean heavily towards the modern day, but there’s a number of legendary grapplers such as El Santo, Jack Brisco, and Shota Umino. Despite having 400 wrestlers involved there’s no way that I could have included everyone that people wanted, so smaller promotions like Dragon Gate and DDT are left out on the basis that I just had to get the Nasty Boys in dammit. And while I’ll be primarily seeding these tournaments via random select across a selection of categories, such as ECW/WWF Golden Era/AEW/etc…, there may be a time of two where an Aces matchup will be pre-ordained. Hint hint.

Matches will feature the traditional 30 minute time limit, 20 count on the floor G1 format. Game settings include having the matches at 150% speed for the sake of brevity and file size, CPU logic at 7, and no entrances, as I don’t feel like tracking down everyone’s music, potentially getting dinged for copyright, and everyone’s just going to skip them anyway. There’s also no managers, so just imagine Jim Cornette screeching ringside as you already do in your dreams.

Wins are worth two points, 30 minute draws one point, and zero points for holding the L. The winners of each block will face each other in the tournament finals to determine who moves onto the 21st tournament. Any ties will be determined by head-to-head matchup, and in the event that the H2H is a draw or there’s some kind of ridiculous other tie-setup, the block winner will be determined by an elimination match featuring all qualified participants.

I also feel the need to place a disclaimer as to the wrestlers being featured. Wrestlers aren’t known for being the best and brightest and most aware of social norms in the best of times. As such, there may be a time when a wrestler featured may be one that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. The selection of wrestlers overall came down to a judgment of my own, and while there’s some such as Chris Benoit and Jimmy Snuka who’s crimes cannot be separated from their work, I can say that wrestlers such as Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan will be taking part, and had I gotten around to doing this when I thought of the idea, someone like Joey Ryan probably would have made the cut at that time given that it came before Ryan’s behaviors were brought to light. If a match or block features someone that you personally can’t tolerate, feel free to skip their matches or the tournament that they’re featured in, but don’t go and poo poo up the thread and turn it into a morality pissing contest. Also, while the roster is set for the most part as of the posting of this OP, if one of these slapdicks manages to go beyond the pale before their tournament comes up, it won’t be too hard to remove them from the roster and no one will be the wiser. If someone’s actions are exposed after their tournament is over, then what’s done is done as long as they aren’t the one who qualifies. If one of these intellectual titans gets found passed out naked in a petting zoo or some poo poo while their tournament is going on, then gently caress my life jesus and I’ll come up with something.

So who will come out on top in the tournament of tournaments? Will the finals feature a legendary continuance, such as Misawa/Kawada or Rock/Austin? Maybe it will be a match denied to us by time such as Okada vs. Bret Hart or Roman Reigns vs Bruno Sammartino? Maybe the finals will be Taichi vs the Sandman and I can openly weep at the amount of my life I’ll have wasted on this project. Regardless, let the tournaments begin!

I'll put the over/under on me finishing this at around four years, tbh. Ideally I'd do a tournament a month, but I know there's no chance of that happening.

As we enter the final week of Tournament 1, a look at the standings and scenarios towards victory and a spot in the G21 Tournament:

A Block

Jon Moxley and Kevin Owens are tied on top with 10 points, but Owens has the tiebreaker over Mox via their H2H. Owens also has wins over the two competitors with 8 points, Andrade El Idolo and Takeshi Morishima. Mox's one loss was a Day 1 KO loss to Owens, since then he's ripped off five wins in a row. El Idolo and Morishima will meet on Day 17, meaning the winner has an outside chance of sneaking into the top spot if everything goes their way. Psychosis/Yuji Nagata/Katsuyori Shibata are all on 6 and in danger of being mathematically eliminated. Nikolai Volkoff needs to win out and Moxley and Owens to lose out to force a three-way tie up top. Godfather is eliminated but at least got a win, which is more than Rick Steiner can say. Couldn't happen to a better guy.

Owens last three: Godfather/Psychosis/Shibata
Moxley last three: El Idolo/Shibata/Nagata

B Block

AJ Styles overcame his KO loss at the hands of The Hurricane to stun Masato Tanaka in surprising fashion and take sole possession of first place. With three matches left against competitors on the lower end of the scale, Styles is in great position to obtain a B Block win. The Hurricane/Tomohiro Ishii/Masato Tanaka sit tied for second; Hurricane does have the tiebreaker over Styles if Styles slips up, but has taken losses to Ishii and Tanaka and thus loses tiebreakers vs those two. Alex Shelley/Tatanka/Jerry Lawler are all middle of the pack, Butch Reed is all but done, Jungle Boy Jack Perry and Paul London are mathematically eliminated.

Styles last three: Perry/London/Lawler
Hurricane last three: Lawler/Shelley/Tatanka
Ishii last three: Tatanka/Tanaka/London
Tanaka last three: London/Ishii/Reed

I would like to say I very much appreciated the wind chimes SFX on the winners screen, as well as everyone in the opening tag ignoring Nikolai Volkoff's corpse for a good chunk of the match.

And now for something completely moderately different: welcome to the 10x10!

The 10x10 is 10 round-robin tournaments consisting of 10 teams each, basically half a G1. All teams will face each other and whoever does the best wins. In the event of a tie, H2H is the determining factor, and if we get a weird 3-way where each team is 1-1, I don't know I'll figure something out because FPW does a lot of things but multi-man matches ain't one of them.

This is not replacing the G21, but is an intermission between tournaments because if there's one thing I lack it's moderation impulses. There's also a chance that other tournaments may pop up as well hint loving hint.

Methodology is the same as the G1 proper: 30 minute time limit, 20 count on the floor, 150% match speed and CPU logic at 7. 2 points for a win, 1 for a shameful tie, and none for holding the L. No finals unless that weird multi-way tie scenario comes into play, which is almost a guarantee that I'll have spoken into existence.

There may also be some wrestlers in the 10x10 not in the G21, why I don't know. FAKE EDIT: I have figured out why and it's because I'm not putting loving Mustapha Saed into the G21 but I'll be damned if I don't put The Gangstas in here. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

It is also worth noting that a wrestler can only appear once in these tag tournaments, i.e. if Edge & Christian are represented then Rated RKO cannot. We respect the space-time continuum around these parts.

So which tag team will be the Team Supreme? Could it be a classic like the Road Warriors or Midnight Express? Maybe a modern day marvel like the Usos or Young Bucks? Perhaps it'll be like The Colons or Public Enemy and I've once again set myself up for public humiliation. Either way, let the tournaments begin!
