Don't post Small Dash!

It's been a little while, but welcome back to Deltarune! Second verse, same as the first: Like the last Deltarune LP, this will be fairly straight-forward. I am not aiming for 100% completion, this is not intended to be exhaustive, and I am going to restrict it to mostly an SSLP. I will capture videos where it seems important, like for a significant cutscene or fascinating battle. Otherwise, I'm looking to play through the game and show off its exceedingly massive amount of charm.

Last thread's rules apply here, but here's a refresher:
  • Don't spoil poo poo! - I know I normally operate on the "I don't care, spoil everything" principle, but Toby Fox games are different. For those who are unfamiliar with them, let them enjoy it!
  • Deltarune Chapter 1 is done, speak freely - But on that note, we've already done the first game and anything there is fair game here.
  • Updates - haha, yeah, i know. I am terrible at this. However, I want to try and turn over a new leaf and get out at least an update a week. Maybe aim for two? These chapters aren't super long, so I am hopeful I can deliver.
  • Don't feed nine-gear crow - Shoot Visari.
  • No, I'm not going to LP Undertale - Too long. Besides, it's been done extremely well by another goon already.

Update 1: The Morning After Pie

First, let's revisit "The Prophecy" to remind us all what we're here for...

(BGM: The Legend)

"DELTARUNE!"

Alright, let's get this show on the road. Importantly, we are porting in the save from the last thread:

This means we keep the "DASH" name, our item inventory, and the flag that says we killed Jevil (reminder: We got the Jevilstail armour out of that fight).

Game proper starts with a black screen and someone calling our name.

Toriel.

If you recall how we ended the last chapter...

...then better brace yourselves.

Screen quickly fades to white as Toriel screams to reveal:

Haha, Kris, the absolute legend.

Props to Toby Fox for a brilliant fake out, too.

The reveal that this is not the first time and that it necessitated putting a lock on the oven...

(BGM: The Sound of Silence)

Toriel leaves and we regain control of Kris. Before we head off to school, it's important to uphold RPG traditions and search everything. There's not a lot in the way of items, but the flavour text is always nice.

Of note:
  • > search bed
    * (It's your bed)
    * (If you go back to sleep, you might miss a lot of important things.)
    * (Will you go back to sleep?)
    SLEEP < > DO NOT

    The New Game + feature of going back to sleep to skip the opening scenes and get straight to the gameplay remains. We, of course, do not go back to sleep! So we get the (You can sleep in class) dialogue.

  • > search window
    * Even after a long night, the sunrise is the same as always.

  • > search brother's drawer
    * There's 5 dollars in your brother's drawer. Take it?
    TAKE IT < > DO NOT

    We do not, so we get "It isn't yours, after all".

  • > search brother's bed
    * Underneath the bed is an old cartridge of "Cat Petters RPG".
    * "catty and catti" can be seen faintly written on it in gel pen

  • > search computer desk
    * On the computer's desktop is a folder called "EPIC games Stuff!!!!"
    * It's a poorly drawn design for a game...
    * Seems the last boss is a creature with giant rainbow wings.
    * Doesn’t seem like this game ever saw the light of day…

  • > search carpet stain
    * It’s stained.

  • > search birdcage in wagon
    * It’s a birdcage. When the door’s closed, there’s no escape.

Looking at out inventory, we currently have a "Ball of Junk" and a "Glass Shard". The shard is a result of defeating Jevil. From what I can tell, every chapter is going to have a secret boss that rewards you with a Glass Shard should you defeat them. Probably something in Chapter 7 we can unlock if we've got all of them. The Ball of Junk, meanwhile, is a representation of our items from the Dark World. Junk here, but our sweet gear and healing items there. (Note: The game points out it smells like scratch'n'sniff marshmallow stickers.)

Stats-wise, there is nothing to report since Chapter 1. We are still Level 1, having gained no EXP. We have "2" Money and are currently equipped with a Bandage and a Halloween Pencil.

Always good when teenagers call home to check in with their family, no?

* Ring...

Hello?

Dreemurr residence...

Who might this be?

Sigh... Do not make me come over there.

Love the death glare Toriel gives, so I have to give it the larger image treatment. Sadly, you cannot repeatedly call her to get additional dialogue. It's just this.

The hallway gives a few more bits of flavour dialogue:
  • > search cactus
    * A cactus
    * There's not much to say about it.

  • > search drawers
    * (... How to Draw Dragons is at the bottom of the drawer.)
    * (The purple character on the cover is dressed... immodestly.)
    * (...)
    * (Your brother will never return this book.)

  • > search mirror
    * (It's what they call "you.")

  • > search door
    * The door is locked.

  • > search bookshelf
    * (There's no time to read books. Just generally.)

    Ooof... I feel this one in particular.

Heading downstairs, we find ourselves in the kitchen. Of course, first thing we need to do is call home again. Gotta let Toriel know where we are! Responsible teenager ftw.

* Ring
* (The phone is ringing, but you can't get it.)
* (You're already on the phone, after all...)

Ah, well. Can't say we didn't try,

Heading stage left, we enter the bathroom. We don't know if there's anything in the toilet, but we're given the option to flush. Seems significant... so we give it a flush.

A bit of fanfare plays when we do so and we get the text (You flushed the toilet!).

Well done team.

Anywho, flavour text in the bathroom is as follows:
  • > search sink
    * (It is not yet time to wash your hands.)

  • > search bathtub
    * On the shower ledge, there's a small container of apple-scented shampoo.
    * ...and a gallon-sized container of pet shampoo.

Exiting the bathroom, this is what we get when we explore the kitchen and living room:
  • > search stove
    * There's some cinnamony batter caked on the stovetop.

  • > search sink

  • > search fridge
    * There's a photo on the fridge. It's of you, your mother, and your brother.

  • > search microwave counter
    * (Cookie cutters for gingerbread monsters and gingerbread humans).

  • > search trash can
    * It's a trashcan.
    * Somehow, it's emitting a pleasant floral scent.

  • > search phone
    * It's a landline phone.
    * But you already have a cell phone.

  • > search chair
    * (It's Chairiel, the beloved living room chair.)

  • > search TV
    * (It's the TV.)
    * (Looks like it's plugged in, but it's dusty.)

  • > search book on couch-side table
    * It's a book of hymns.

And that's it! Nothing else of note since Chapter 1. Having exhausted our options at home, we move onto the next part of the intro: school.

Scene fades to black...

Next update: We reconnect with Susie!

The Undertale and chapter 1 LPs were great, so I'm looking forward to this as well!

I remember the initial chapter 2 livestream and a bunch of people on SA hooted and hollered when pie theory was confirmed. :allears:

Good news! I've got a few more recipes to share with the thread as updates get going. Though spoiler alert: I've never made a pie before, so I don't really have anything to capture the essence of Toriel's pie. More of a fruit crumble kinda guy.

Update 2: Swing-by With Susie

(BGM: School)

This being Chapter 2, we skip the car ride through town we had in the last LP. Instead, we cut straight to the classroom from the fade to black.

(I was really worried after you disappeared yesterday...)

(I guess we can talk about that after class.)

We're not in our seat for more than a second when Susie gives it a swift kick:

(...if I knew you were going to be late...)

(I wouldna showed up on time.)

Susie, please don't kick your desk.

Treat school property, like you'd treat people.

Ha, really Alphys? You know what Susie is about. Else you wouldn't have shown such concern for Kris or given all those dire warnings last LP.

....

Okay.

Next time I'll aim for the vitals.

Susie laughs at a joke clear only to her.

Th... That's not what I...

We have a lot to go over today...

First, we're starting the reading from page 142!

Any... any volunteers?

The silence is deafening.

Though only for a moment. Noelle is rather quick to jump in:

But this clown gets up real fast. What the gently caress, Berdly?

This fuckin' guy.

Umm, t-that's OK, I can...

"Page 142."

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,"

"Times-a pretty good. Times-a pretty bad."

"Mediocre times. Iffy times. So-so times..."

Look, I'm just gonna come out and say it: Monster-verse Dickens kind of sucks. Though I suppose this level of prose is keeping in line with Alphys's favourite writers.

(BGM: The Sound of Silence)

And P-PLEASE! Remember your group projects!

You were, um, s-sleeping all class..

D-don't worry! I'm not mad! J... just concerned!

(Usually you only sleep through the start.)

... Kris... where did you and Susie go yesterday?

...

...

Um, if you don't want to tell me, that's okay.

I was just really... worried about you.

If... If Susie causes you any trouble, then...

Okay, I... I can't really do anything. Eheh.

But... I'm looking out for you, okay?

Are you, Alphys? Are you? Anyways, at this point we are free to wander around again. Which means for flavour text if we explore the room. There's been some changes since Chapter 1's LP.

Here's what we find:
  • > search Alphys's desk
    * (It's a bunch of roses.)

  • > search desktop computer
    * (The computer wallpaper has been updated.)
    * (The buff embracing heroes are now edited to be 4 inches apart.)
    * (There's dialogue about proper distancing at the school dance.)
    * (You wonder if your mother had some influence on this change.)

  • > search papers on wall
    * (Looks like motivational quotes from various literature.)
    * "Try your best, Astral Wolf!"
    * "Even in your darkest hour...!"
    * (... that one seems to be from a video game.)

This whole partner thing...

You didn't lose sleep over it, did you?

:mrgw:

So maybe you were just...

Staying up late talking to Asriel online again?

...ah, wait, you... can't do that, right?

I... I hope the internet gets fixed soon.

I don't want to revert to my primal form.

Interesting bit of lore here that the internet is down in monsterville. It sounds like for everyone, not just Kris. Don't wanna know what Alphys's primal form is.

If we talk to Alphys again, we get:

Kris, get a good sleep tonight, okay?

On my way out of the classroom, I realize I hadn't checked the clock...
  • > check clock
    * (You checked the time.)

Point taken, clock. Point taken.

Upon exiting, we see Susie has been waiting for us.

You were sleeping like a corpse all class.

Heh, what's the matter?

Had trouble going beddy-bye last night?

Like I could SLEEP after yesterday!?

Just waiting for today felt like... years!!

Did... all that stuff really happen!?

Lancer, Ralsei, everyone... are they still...

... Look.

You've been wondering the same thing, right?

(BGM: The Door)

Everything we've been waiting for is just behind this...

...

If we, uh, open this and there's nothing inside...

Will, uh, we still be...

(BGM: Girl Next Door)

*Fun fact, this is the first new track for Chapter 2 we've gotten. So far everything else has been from Chapter 1.

What.. the HELL.. are you doing here?

Umm... sorry to bother you, but, ummm, I...

Well, I just... Berdly and I were going to the Library to...

Do some r-research for our group projects, and...

If it's OK, um... would you... want to come too...?

We're like, uhhh... busy, with, uh...

Kris gets some absolute banger responses in this chapter. Try and sell this one, Susie!

O-oh? Umm, well... er... that sounds, um, just...

(Kris, if you could bring her by later...)

(It would means a lot to me...!)

And with that Noelle walks off. Whew! Thought she'd never leave.

Why would NOELLE?? Ask ME??

To do HOMEWORK?? With HER?!??

Deathwish much? Does she WANNA fail?

...

Kris, did you notice how nervous she was...?

And like... blushing and stuff?

Kris, you don't think... she... uh...

Ha, cute.

This is OUR thing, y'know?

Let's go!

Hey, alright! Welcome back to the Dark World, thread! I'll take this opportunity to review out stats and items now that we're here. Feels like it's been a long time since we've looked at those.

Our items are as follows:
  • Glowshard - A shimmering shard. Its value increases each Chapter. (Meant to be sold. Goes up by $50 each chapter).
  • Dark Candy - Heals 40HP. A red-and-black star that tastes like marshmallow. (Remember how the junk in our pocket smelt of marshmallows???)
  • ReviveMint - Heals a fallen ally to MAX HP. A minty green crystal.
  • Darkbuger - A mysterious black burger made of... Hey, this is just burnt! +70HP
  • SpinCake - A pastry in the shape of a top. Heals 140 HP to the team. (This was the cake sidequest reward, if you recall).

Key items are as follows. Like last LP, Cell Phone doesn't work in the Dark World. Once again we get the edited clip of Undertale's "mus_smile", which plays in the inaccessible Gaster room. Let yer fan theories go wild! I'm of the opinion it's a red herring, but what do I know?

The Shadow Crystal, meanwhile, is that glass we had in the real world. It's what we go when we defeated Jevil. Its description reads "A sharp shadow moves like water in the hand. You have collected [1]." Presumably there will be a second secret boss we can track down in this chapter from whom we claim another piece.

Then briefly, here are our equipment load-outs and powers:

That aside, I start walking towards the top of the screen and get some sass from Susie for not running:

Hey Kris, uh, you really gonna walk everywhere so slowly?

I know you're kinda, uh, taking it in, but you can run, y'know?

Cheeky.

It's been ever-so-long...!

Yeah, yeah, it's been, what, a day?

Oh! That is... short, isn't it?

It's just that, I've never had friends before...

So I've never waiting so long to see them again, either!

Fine, guess we'll TRY not to let you die of loneliness.

I bet Lancer wants to see us too, right?

Hey... wait a sec.

Where IS Lancer?

Just wait here, alright?

... OK.

(Hey, this better not be some kind of prank or something!)

(I need you to return to the Light World...)

(And go to the old classroom, to the EAST of the closet doors.)

(Inside, gather everything on the ground...)

(And bring it back here, could you?)

(BGM: Empty Town)

We get control of Kris again at this point. (As an aside, how does Ralsei know this stuff? More and more suspicious every chapter, I say...).

Anywho, talking again to Ralsei and Susie get us a pair of extra dialogue. Ralsei's isn't worth repeating. He reiterates our current objective in a slightly different way. Susie's is fun, though:

So Ralsei, you're not going to put your hat back on?

Why? Did I look cuter before?

Uhhhh, NO, I just mean...

You... you think I look cuter now?

Hurry the hell up, Kris.

Longer you take, longer I gotta spend with THIS weirdo.

If you're bored, Susie, we could crochet some team scarves...

Wait, "Kro-shay?" Isn't that the, uh, game with the hammer?

Er... it's like knitting.

Alright. Long as I get to use the hammer.

Heading north we find our first proper save point. Accessing it gives us this:

* You are filled with the power of immediate nostalgia.

Anyways, we can't access the castle right now. Trying to do so annoys Susie:

And trying to open the doors in the town give us variations of "It's locked" dialogue:

So there really is nothing more to do here right now. We have to go do Ralsei's errand. But before we head south to the exit, we can double-check those paths east and west outside of the castle town gate.

Going east first, we come here:

You might remember this area as where we first came to Castle Town in Chapter 1. Apparently that hole there serves a mechanical purpose. If you have a save where you defeated Jevil but for whatever reason didn't collect the items from his fight, they can be picked up here. I have never had that happen, personally, so I am going off of internet hearsay. Lemme know if anyone reading has ever actually used the missing item hole.

Examining it gives us this text:

* (The rubble on the ground seems to have been dusted and polished.)
* (Someone around here really cares about the details.)

Going west takes us here:

To the tutorial dummy. We can still give it a hug if we need. Which of course we do:

* You hugged the dummy.
* Nothing wrong with a little extra fluffiness in your life.

* You're all hugged out. (If you try to hug it again).

Further right we come to the ominous triforce lookin' door. Not relevant this chapter, not relevant last chapter. I'm sure we'll come back 'round to it. Examining it, we get:

* (It seems to be locked.)
* (It may never open again.)

That's it! Let's return to the Light World.

(BGM: The Sound of Silence)

We can't get up to very much mischief and keep Susie and Ralsei waiting. School's out, we don't have keys, and everything is locked up:

Well, that and Kris's conscience(?) keeps them from wandering away. As per video game rules, the only place we can go is exactly where we need to go.

We CAN interact with the water fountain here. It gives us this bit of text:

* (You ran the water fountain.)
* (It's lukewarm.)

Just some throwaway dialogue in a free indie game, or a metaphor for life? You decide.

Anyways, to the old classroom:

The place is a mess. Just cards and chess boards and all sorts of game nonsense scattered everywhere. Game nonsense that is thematically appropriate for Chapter 1... Hmm... HMM...

As we enter, the screen fades to black and we are told that

* You gathered all the junk off the floor...

* ...and turned it into a giant dusty ball.

Kris.

You legend.

Absolute unit.

If we try, once again, to abandon the plot and our friends and leave the school, we find ourselves blocked by Alphys and Toriel.

Th-they're great, Tori!

One of my favourite students. A real star!

Oh, how wonderful!

... they have not been up to anything strange?

Haha, definitely one of my favourite comedy beats in the game.

Well, that is relieving. I have just been...

A little concerned lately.

(Just lately?)

... You take it easy too, Alphys.

I am always cheering you on, alright?

Uhhh... th... th... th... thanks!

At this point if we try going south again, we get the message "(Can't let mom find out you're balancing a giant trash orb!)" Which... well, fair enough.

Sally posted:

this line has been haunting my thoughts for the last couple days... made me realize i forgot some critical dialogue!

the cell phone? it has more uses than annoying Toriel at home. i nearly forgot that you can annoy her at school, too! when you return to the Light World to construct the trash orb, you can call her while she's in the hallway talking with Alphys. there are two branches here...

Exhibit A: Call Before Eavesdropping:

* (Ring, ring...)

Oh, excuse me, I seem to be receiving a phone call.

Kris...? What is it, honey?

... Could you explain what you mean by that?

Exhibit B: Call After Eavesdropping

Actually, this one is essentially identical. Just swap out the "trash orb" comment for this:

This is all just to say that Kris is normal!

We return to the Dark World:

Just as Kris transforms:

So, too, does the ball of junk:

You might've already guess where this is going...

Huzzah! The denizens of the previous Dark World are now condensed into our Dark World! Rejoice!

This also means:

(BGM: Lancer)

Lancer!!!!

Everyone's here!

... but, uh, what happened to, uh, Lancer's castle?

Gone?

That "Dark World" disappeared...

... And turned back into a normal classroom.

... So where's Lancer gonna live now?

Don't worry, Susie!!

We'll conquer Ralsei's castle as our own!!

They're gonna pass out from laughing so hard at their own jokes.

(The power of our Fountain...)

(Will transform this town more and more.)

(From now on, the enemies we SPARE...)

(Will be RECRUITED to our town.)

(So let's keep SPARING enemies, okay?)

I'll talk about this mechanic next update. This update's getting a bit long in the teeth as it is.

We can head NORTH towards the CASTLE.

I have a special surprise to show you there!

Last one there is a fresh and fragrant egg!!

At that point, we have control of our party again and are free to explore our expanded town.

Stay tuned for the next update where we explore our expanded town!

I think it also works if, say, you start a fresh Chapter 2 save but also have a Chapter 1 Clear save with the Jevil fight done. In that case, I believe it gives you the items, determined by the most recent Ch1 Clear data.

Ah, Deltarune - still a classic.

And we've still got most of a whole chapter to go...

the cell phone? it has more uses than annoying Toriel at home. i nearly forgot that you can annoy her at school, too! when you return to the Light World to construct the trash orb, you can call her while she's in the hallway talking with Alphys. there are two branches here...

Exhibit A: Call Before Eavesdropping:

* (Ring, ring...)

The boss battles can have quite a bit going on so yeah videos of those would probably be appreciated.

There's a few mooks with a lot more going on as well so those would probably be fine as well to see.

Update 3: My DASH Town

(BGM: My Castle Town)

And we're back!

Lancer has gone off to the castle, but despite Susie's protestations, we're actually just going to faff about the expanded town and see what we have to see.

Immediately to our left by the shop is one of the block guys we saw in the forest last chapter:

* (I'm bjust a block.)
* (I don't bget it.)
* (Did bwe go somebwhere?)

(BGM: Lantern)

Going into the shop, we encounter Seam again. (Remember: It's pronounced "Shawm"!)

Shop items are the same. We're still stocked up from last chapter. Talking to him gives us new dialogue, especially since we beat Jevil last time. In fact, if you "Talk" with him he'll return right to that very subject!

* ... Oh? What's that? It seems like he gave something to you.
* That's right, you must not have noticed it.
* That Crystal... It's nearly invisible, but you've been holding it this whole time.
* Here, I'll take it off your hands and appraise it.
* ...
* Incredible! To think he had a Shadow Crystal...
* Shadow Crystals, so called because you can only see their shadow.
* ...
* Call it a premonition, but I get the feeling you may find more of these...
* ...

* If you can gather more Shadow Crystals, bring them here!
* I'm sure I can stitch together something incredible for you...

That's about it. There's a new option in "Sell" though for "Pocket Items". Took me forever to figure out what it is, but I believe it's your stored items. You can now do that. Store items. I haven't had reason to yet. There aren't that many in Deltarune. So anywho, we leave and Seam wishes us farewell, sort of:

* See you again...
* Or not...
* Ha ha ha ha...

(BGM: My Castle Town)

Continuing clockwise out of Seam's shop, we find the save point and manual right before the castle. Ralsei's really proud of that manual. Really keepin' it front and centre...

The topics are "Controls", "Recruits", "Item Storage", and "Do Not Read". The "Recruits" one is of interest to us for Chapter 2. It reminds us of what Ralsei said last update: When we SPARE enemies, they become recruited to our town. Don't kill anyone and our place is more populated.

Easy.

Going to the Save Point lets us investigate our recruits and there's some fun bit of text and intel for us to go over. I have TIMG'd them below here for anyone interested in viewing them:

Continuing clockwise, we find the cafe. We chat to this rabbick real quick, though:

* (Sukkiri...)

I am not 100% sure if "sukkiri" is anything. A web search suggests it is the Japanese word for "clean" which makes sense in context, but I can't be certain... I suppose this dust mote is multilingual.

In the cafe there are a bunch of NPCs. Not much to do here. We get some dialogue from everyone, but nothing critical. The only mechanically important use to the cafe is that we can revisit the Top Chef to re-up our SpinCake supply when we run out. We can only have one at a time, though, so we're good.

Dialogue:
  • > search jukebox

  • > talk jigsawry
    * Lemonade? ... Please.

  • > talk hathy
    * (Hathy seems fine.)

  • > talk ruddin with hathy
    * Sure is great to be here with my best friend Hathy.

  • > talk ruddin sitting alone
    * Hey, boss! I'll have a Dark Candy Starfait!

  • > talk top chef

    * Someone is already working there!!
    * A cafe that serves pastries... What a disgrace...
    * What sort of humiliating thing will happen next!?

After talking to Top Chef we get a prompt to CHECK RECRUITS or GET PRIZE. The former is the same as checking at a save point and the latter is our SpinCake reward from Chapter 1. Moving along, we can go check out the Bakery and find out whose moved in:

* Our special chefs spin baked goods at the TOP of their class!

But first, we'll talk to the loiterers outside...

* She hopes you'll like it too.

Ahh... this guy.

And, Trulye, a magnificenth Towne of Castles, it art!

But ho! Hmmm... Something art... Lackingth, it Feeleth.

Couldth thou guys... Perhapsth...

Bringe in an Evil Rulere... Or some Thinge...?

Lancer hath benounced me "Vice Fathere..."

Forthhence, I do ALL the Cookinge and Cleaninge.

Perhapsth, I shouldst seeketh a New Employere...

Yeesh. I will be glad to leave Rouxls Kaard here and never see him again.

Inside the Bakery we find...

Ah, yes. I see what Top Chef was talking about.

Try my delicious hand-formed cookies!

We take a cookie...

I now pronounce you... cookie and wife.

* (LancerCookie was added to your ITEMS.)

Alright, let's take a gander...

... huh...

If we say we don't want one, we get this response:

Even if you get stronger, Lancer Cookies will not falter!

Always reliable, they will heal you in times of need!

(Maybe if you need to be healed 1 HP...)

Anyways, let's talk to Malius. If you recall, we met him in Chapter 1 and he was able to fix a variety of items for us... the Top Cake for Top Chef, the broken key to get to Jevil... and he could "fix" our HP my giving us a massage.

* Well, well. Welcome to TOP BAKERY.

* I do not know what any of these STRANGE TOOLS are for.
* But using my skills I can FUSE ITEMs to create NEW ONES.

Bunch of items here. Some I am not gonna bother with... and some we literally cannot bother with! Chapter 3 teaser items with things we don't have access to yet.

List of item combos:
  • Darkburger + Darkbuger = DD-Burger (x2 use Darkburger)
  • Amber Card + Amber Card = Silver Card (increases dropped money by 5%)
  • Pink Ribbon + White Ribbon = TwinRibbon (armour (+3 DF and increased graze area))
  • GlowWrist + IronShackle = SpikeBand (armour (+2 AT, +1 DF))
  • B.ShotBowtie + TensionBit = Tension Bow(+2 DF and increased TP from grazing)
  • Thorn Ring + Pure Crystal = Twisted Sword (+16 AT and "trance" effect)
We can get some of this gear later on. That Twisted Sword? Unavailable this chapter. The information for it has been gleaned from people who have torn apart the game files. I know Toby Fox has said there's no genocide route in this game, but there's something ominous about the Twisted Sword. Presumably the "Pure Crystal" is gained from combining all the Shadow Crystals we'll eventually get.

We'll see!

Chatting Malius makes him confused on the topic of BREAD. Asking to get healed does the same as before. The team get hammered:

* Your body is a weapon too. You must take care of it from time to time.
* Huh-hah! Let's feel my technique.

* Well, well! Don't you feel better after a nice massage? Huh-hah!

We leave and continue going clockwise around the town...

* Or so I heard it's called.

YEAH, YOU"RE drat RIGHT IT"S CALLED DASHTOWNE!

* Come to think of it.
* Welcome to me too, haha!
* I think we're going to like living here.

* I hereby declare today National Ham Sandwich Day of Independence!

The regular Ruddin says this:

* This guy always seems like he's enjoying life more than me.
* Maybe it's because he's a higher level...?

And to the last building, the Dojo:

  • > search bed
    * (It's a bed for three people, or one three-headed person.)

* It's a PARTY every day!
* And I'M the oldest!
* (We're the same age...)

* Lucky for you... Just hope you don't meet my friends!

This guy here is a Pippins, a scrapped enemy from Chapter 1. Pippins are supposed to be dice enemies.

* I will train myself for the tournament

The jigsaw guy up here provides us tutorial information. Nothing new from last chapter. This screenshot is funny out of context. Reminder, we only put in $1 to the hole last go around. Sorry, we're cheap!

Let's talk to Jigsaw Joe in the centre there...

* Hey, boss! Boss!
* Heh, I'm so glad to have a nice boss, I could shed a tear...

* Boss! You're strong, but there's always time to learn.
* The next step after tutorials, is TRAINING!
* So, me and the boys got you together a DOJO!
* Complete our BATTLE CHALLENGES and get some fabulous prizes!
* Meanwhile, ya might get a little bit tougher!
* We're gonna make you the strongest, boss!

:siren: (Video: Party Dojo Fights, P1) :siren:

These are probably best watched as a video. Combat has Rude Buster playing over it, which is a bop we must not ignore.

(BGM: Rude Buster)

Jigsaw Joe reminds us of our basics. This is an interactive tutorial, despite what he was saying.

Meh.

To spare him, we shave him.

Uh...

Nice.

The Jigsawry is another extended tutorial. We test out grazing by maxing out our TP without getting hit.

Double meh.

The re-match with Clover actually presents a mild challenge and helps knock the cobwebs off if it's been a while since you've played Chapter 1. (Like it has for us, ahh! It's good to be back.)

The goal is to find a topic to talk to them about that appeals to all three. Once satisfied with conversation, we can SPARE them.

Once we've scored all the items here, we can leave! We've wandered the whole castle town now. There're a few other NPCs to the south by the cliffs and the training dummy, but we'll catch them on our way out. For now, let's go see what Lancer has been doing! Surely he's not been up to any minor vandalism.

(BGM: My Castle Town)

* (There's nothing to sphere but sphere itself.)

:what:

* Prince Ralsei, I will keep your hat a-racked until you need it.
* Until then, please allow me to pretend to be a wizard! Hi-ya!

Finally! Inside the castle. Been waiting to peek inside since Chapter 1.

Just wanted to show off your huge house, huh?

No, what I want to show you is upstairs!

  • > search cauldron
Oh!! I nearly forgot!! This is where I cook!

Of course! Cauldron-cooking is very convenient!

Here, Kris, Susie, have a cake!

At which point, a stock explosion clip and sound play as a cake flies out of the cauldron...

...and Susie downs it one go like Booster in Marrymore.

Hmm... A little thick on the frosting.

Hey, anyone was free to make an interception.

Okay, now make a chocolate one!

Why don't we go upstairs first?

The door immediately in front of us is locked. And since Ralsei wants us to go upstairs, that means we will of course explore the downstairs first:

Ahh, it's Ralsei's dungeon!

* We've grown to love this hellish place, where we dress as animals!

Just gonna say, Ralsei, it's a little worrying that you've kept the former monarchs imprisoned. Don't want any competition? And the animal crackers, why are they locked up?

Down the hallway we find the King of Spades, probably the only person who actually needs to be locked up?

... have you come to humiliate me...?

EAT IT, old man!

... hey, why the hell does HE get a giant water thing?

... jealous, are you?

Ha ha ha!! (Glub glub) Feel despair!!

We have NOTHING to discuss.

Then as we walk away...

...

By the way...

You were gonna throw him off a CLIFF!

Ah, your prejudice made my bluff too effective, I see.

... besides, even IF I threw him, he would just...

Bounce.

My son... is...

And with that, we've basically stalled all we can! Let's go upstairs and see what Lancer's been up to. Oh, and check out that surprise Ralsei promised.

... I made rooms for you in the castle!

So you can stay here whenever you want!

Ummm, I'd be happy if this place...

Could be like a second home to you.

A place that you can go...

No matter what's happening outside.

...

Heh, well, we'll take a look.

First up, Kris's room:

Well, it's a lot nicer than what they're working with in the Light World.
  • > search closet
    * It's a wardrobe full of all sorts of different clothes.
    * You could wear whatever you want.

    ... but we won't.

  • > search shelf under window
    * It's a shelf.
    * All sorts of keepsakes could be put here.

  • > search bedside table
    * It's a stand for your manual

Really pushing it with those manuals, Ralsei...
  • > search bed
    * It's your bed.
    * It feels incredibly soft. Like sleeping on a dream...

Up next, Susie's Room:

And Susie, this is your room!

Umm, I tried to make it something you'd like, but...

You can put anything else you want in here, too!

I really hope you like it here!

...

I... guess that's pretty cool?

My own room... like this.

... how long did it, uh, take you to do this?

Well, er, since I last you two, I...

Hehehehe...

(I think she likes it, Kris!)

(Haha, jealous I got the COOL room? LOOK, Kris!)

Now I can stab myself during the night.

Finally some convenience.

Pinecones, chalk, moss, jars of salsa,

Pieces of ice, black crumbs from the toaster, jawbreakers...

... Oh, and like actual food, too.

So I put it over here for you.

Cool, I'll read it before bed.

That'll put me to sleep.

* All the clothes are ripping each other up into shreds.

Hell yeah! Jealous, Kris?

Lancer's Room up next:

I should note that there's a cartoon splat noise that plays whenever you enter the door.

A room as sick as you?! Woah!! I want to see!!

I'll keep digging holes until I reach your room.

Uh, it's got a door, y'know.

A door!? Wow, peachboy, you went all out!!!

  • > search whatever that is to the right of Lancer
    * (It's a music player.)
    * (Listen to the contents?)
    Listen < > Do Not
    * (...)

  • > search shovel-lookin' thing
    * (It's some kind of digging implement.)

  • > search holes 1-4
    * (There's salsa buried in the ground here.)

    * (It's a hole. Presumably dug for fun.)

    * (It's a hole made recreationally.)

    * (You found 20 Rupys in the hole!)
    * (Unfortunately, that's not a useful currency here...)

  • > search bed
Wow!! It's better than I remember!!!!!

I even have my own bed now!!!

Now I don't have to sleep in a hole anymore!!!

No, that was for the bike.

Last door:

Oh, just more rooms I'm renovating.

... so is your room up there?

Er, yes! I still, um, haven't dusted it though...

Yeah, like we need to see your nerdy glasses collection anyway.

So on one hand, I'm sure the next floor is going to be for party members that we get this Chapter--Ralsei seems to want Lightners to return to the Dark World--but on the other hand, this is suspicious. Between this and the locked up monarchs and... well, just all the background lore that Ralsei seems to be hiding from us, there is definitely something going on. BUUUUT, we've gone over this like mad in Chapter 1. I submit these as two new pieces of evidence for the thread, but I don't want to direct the "Ralsei is hiding something" conversation.

Homework calls, though. Kris goes to leave...

So, what do we do now?

Feel free to explore the town until you're ready to leave.

Funny you should say that, Susie.

We head straight out of town!

But make sure to check these side areas for new Darkners:

The hole in the cliff is now officially there. Nothing to collect. We have Jevil's items. But we can talk to Mr. Society!

* Oh, it's quite a wonderful town, really. Thank you!
* ... so... why am I alone here?
* A bit of self-reflection, I suppose.
* I do realize I was quite a coward before...
* So... I wanted to say... well...
* I STILL AM!!!
* My cards, I cannot handle society!

* When I'm ready to meet society again, I'll be back!
* Thank you, thank you for the wonderful home! I will NOT use it!

and then he just... floats upwards:

Huh.

Right, we'll examining the hole nets us this:

* (There's a hole in the wall.)
* (There's nothing inside.)

So we've tapped out of interactions here. To the other side!

* I reckon I knew'n this would'n happen...
* It's not'n no fault of yours.
* He'll'n be back one day.

* Such is the way of the worm.

YES < > NO
* (You put your mouth against the mannequin's cheek...)

Examining the mannequin again, it says:

* (A mannequin dressed in poor taste.)

That pun game...

* Don't tell anybody.

And with that, we've seen all we need to see! Let's go join Noelle at the library and get this group project done.

Wait, Kris, we're leaving!? But we just got here!

Man, I don't wanna go do the group project...

Oh... you two have homework?

Uhh, well,

Susie, Kris, you ought to do it right away! School's important!

Ugh, fine!!! I'll do it!!! Jeez!!!

I'll go and help you, too!!!

Er, wait, Lancer! Perhaps you shouldn't--

Too late, kindboy!! Friendship Forme!!

... What? Where'd you go...?

Don't worry!! I just entered your INVENTORY!!

Dunno what that means, but OK!

:stonk: oh nooooo

Uh, we're good.

Ahah, quite!! We, as a Teame--art good!!

...

Alright, enough already. Let's get going.

See you soon!

Note: We cannot immediately go back into DASHtown at this point...

...Ralsei is standing there watching us leave!

(What's the point of having a room if you can't slack off in it?)

Anyways, true to their word, Lancer and Rouxls are now part of our Key Items inventory. Just, uh... sittin' there.
  • Roulxs Kaard - Thou gazeth upon a man most handsometh. This daringst genius, adoredth beyondth all hey
  • Lancer - Hohoho! I'm a tough boy! Treat me like one of your ITEMS!
Selecting Lancer makes a cartoon splat noise. We can cartoon splat noise whenever we want now! Also, Lancer dances back and forth a lil bit. Roulxs just stands there.

(BGM: The Sound of Silence)

Well, drat. GUESS we gotta do our project.

Least we got Lancer, right!?

... Lancer? Where are you?

drat, guess he skipped out after all, huh?

Nah, Lancer has just turned back into an actual card.

Hmm... so, where should we do this?

Ugh... Well, alright.

Susie runs off ahead.

Their description is: "The Jack of Spades, and the Rules Card."

We can now explore a bit more of the school. Can't go back into the closet--Kris won't let you at this point. But with Toriel gone home for the day, we can examine her classroom again!

  • > search cork board
    * Do you like, breathing? Moving fast, with or without, legs?
    * But usually, with legs?
    * Join the Cross Country Team with Jockington, and Noelle!

And just a general reminder, these last two lockers are Kris and their brothers'. Kris's is closest to Toriel's room.

  • > search dry-erase board
    * ("Ms. Toriel" is written in cursive on the dry-erase board.)
    * (Seems like it hasn't been erased in a very long time.)

  • > search dry-erase felt
    * (You uncap the scented green marker.)
    * (It's almost dry, but that gives it a refined, aged apple bouquet.)

  • > search desktop computer
    * (The computer wallpaper has been updated.)
    * (It's a picture of your brother and you playing video games.)
    * (Your brother is using the knock-off controller.)

  • > search orange
    * (It's an orange. It's unknown if it's safe for teachers to eat this.)

  • > search poster
    * (It's a poster of several basic shapes.)
    * (Circle, Oval, Square...)
    * (Hyperdodecahedron...)

  • > search closet shelves
    * (Kids' books.)
    * (Some of them used to be yours.)

  • > search pictures on closet
    * (It's a primitive drawing of your mom.)

  • > search chair tower

There's nothing more to see here. Immediately upon leaving the school we hear frantic honking in the distance.

:siren: (Video: Beep Beep Mothrfuckre) :siren:

O-officer Undyne!?

When a little dog drove one of those toy cars...

Into the middle of the street and started doing donuts!

In the chaos, all the cars in town got jammed up!!

Thankfully, no one was hurt... but...

Ordinary citizens like you gotta get out of here.

I've got some heavy lifting to do!

  • > search grey car
    * (It looks like a car.)
    * (There is even man inside this one...)

If we talk to the guy on the left, we get:

* I heard a dog was doing "donuts" so I sped over here.
* But I just learned "Donuts" is actually the name of a special attack for cars.

And the feller in the green car says this:

* Traffic's moving at a snail's pace.

* Wow, my first traffic jam!
* I can't help but feel a sense of pride...

Enough of that, haha. Onto the Librarby!

School. Goddamn. Project.

...

Hey, Kris, where the hell IS everybody?

(BGM: The Door)

It's like...

... the inside of the closet?

... another Dark World?

...

Well.

Guess this means we can't start our project.

... unless.

You know. Kris.

If there's a Dark Fountain in there.

You can seal it...

And it'll turn back into the computer lab, right?

:buddy:

...

Kris, you're right.

Like, you said a correct fact.

But you made a mistake.

The mistake of knowing me.

'Cause when I see a big pit,

And as long as you're with me...

I'm dragging you in too!

C'mon, Kris!!

(Note: The sparkle flying off of Kris... we lost something...)

It is curious and wants to accept all kinds of challenges
So one thing notable about Deltarune is that there's a few artists involved that are specifically billed in the credits as Guest Character Designers. All of them stand out as being interesting (to me at least) in distinct ways and so I figured whenever their contributions become relevant I'll highlight them in the thread.

To get us up to speed I'll first go over Chapter 1's guest designer: Kanotynes (twitter, tumblr). An artist on tumblr that Toby presumably discovered via her homestuck fanart. Longtime Undertale fans may also be familiar with some of her Undertale fanart, particularly this gif

For Deltarune Kano designed most of the playing card-themed characters: Lancer, the King, Rudinn, Hathy, Clover, and Jevil. Notably however, most of them weren't designed for Deltarune, but rather independently designed way back in March of 2012 for a school project.

A one-two punch of a literal fever dream Toby had the previous year of an ending of a video game that didn't exist and seeing Kano's playing card designs inspired Toby to start work on an early, pre-Undertale proto-Deltarune, asking Kano for permission to use her designs and to design a Joker to go with the rest. Years later Deltarune resumed production and Kano was brought back on to contribute further concept art relating to the characters.

I'll close this post with other deltarune pics she's done ("my drawings are just fanart so don't take it too seriously"):

I mean... sure, Ralsei is almost certainly hiding stuff. Not sure WHAT exactly, but stuff. I don't think that necessarily makes him less of a friend, though. Sometimes there's... important stuff that for whatever reason you can't share right at the start, or you need to help guide people towards a certain outcome, but not out of malice.

That being said, I just want to talk about the rooms for a second. They make me feel things.

There's a distinct intent here that makes me think that, well. We're going to have to use the rooms for this reason in time, or at least one party member will need to. And there's reason to go for it on display.

Kris' room in Ralsei's castle is pretty clear. It speaks to Ralsei's understanding of the Light World, much like his ability to give directions between classrooms. Because, well. Just compare it to their room at home.

Kris loves their brother, but this is the room made fully theirs. Their Dark World colors. The trophies are over their bed, suggesting they earned them. A heavenly bed.

All sorts of keepsakes could be put here, not just a birdcage in a wagon.

You could wear whatever you want. A phrase narrated while looking at a fantasy wardrobe we the player don't get to look inside. But Kris doesn't put on anything else, not yet. It's simple, but it just kind of stings to me, especially if I go and overthink it through a queer lens.

And Susie's... well, it's a lot more straightforward to see, since she outwardly emotes a lot more than Kris does. She certainly wants to act cool about it, but having her own room, dedicated to her likes and interests and taste in decor, is something she clearly doesn't have. There's a quiet moment where she has to drink it in, wondering how much effort Ralsei had to go through to give her a space all her own, before she lets the happiness reign, relishing in the COOL room.

There's a real sense of care and longing in them. A room of one's own, when even in your own home, that's not something you have. It just... makes me emotional, thinking about them, even if I might just read into them too much. I just wanted to put that out there for this.

Don't post Small Dash!

oh this is real neat! the card kingdom folk always felt a bit off for me... not in a bad way, but in that they felt different from the style of Undertale. i think it was Temmie Chang who did all the art for UT? anyways, neat that Toby Fox is giving work to new artists like this. very feel good

i am guessing by your post that Ch2 also has a guest artist?

Undertale's art was mostly handled by Temmie Chang and Magnolia Porter with a couple of character designs kicked in by one off guest artists here or there.

Thank you! Temmie wasn't the only artist on Undertale and Toby actually did a decent chunk of the art himself (the stuff from the True Lab? 100% Toby), but she was indeed the most prominent; there were def a few other artists involved though. For example Magnolia Porter (creator the webcomic Monster Pulse; having her be involved was actually a kickstarter stretch goal) was the game's "Assistant Monster Designer" and did the designs for Snowdrake, Ice Cap, Jerry, Gyftrot, Monster Kid, and Vulkin. Meanwhile GGDG (Cucumber Quest) also provided some additional location related concept art like the exterior of Undyne's House and the transitional area between the MTT Hotel and the Core (and some other stuff). Plus a few other pixel artists helping with locations and sprites (Kenju, Merrigo, and Chess to name a few), particularly later in the game's development when Temmie got busy with college. If you ever get your hands on the Undertale Art Book it's a fascinating read.

Deltarune's first chapter was actually a bit more closer to "Temmie (and to a lesser extent Toby) did all the art", with all the non-Temmie/Toby art being concept art (both Kano's concept art we discussed earlier, plus GGDG doing Kris & Susie's Dark World designs and sticking around as a secondary concept artist). Chapter 2 has seen the art team expand a bit more, though Temmie remains the main artist.

Yeah, Deltarune!

So, I'm generally a pretty stoic person. Especially when it comes to media. I can watch a scene that is agonizingly painful and come away with a mild frown on my face. I don't laugh much. Getting me to feel feelings is very difficult.

Deltarune has made me smile, laugh, sniffle, and come within a few clicks of writing highly emotional fanfic. This game is really, really good at drawing emotions out of people, and it's not even close to being done yet. I think that's just a sign of its power. Also, it inspired a lot of really emotional fanfic, which varies in quality from garbage to actually incredible.

A lot of the things I have things to say about come later, so I'll keep quiet for now. But just know we're in for a wild ride friendos
