A wild west internet was fine before everything had to be consolidated and monetized by a handful of tech giants or startups looking to be acquired by them. A laissez-faire internet doesn’t work because of monopolies and generally uninformed users.

The solutions should be obvious but ofc nothing is being done and I doubt the internet will ever be fixed in any real way.

...by someone who's underpaid and doesn't have health insurance because delivery app companies were successful in skirting labor laws and making all of their delivery people independently contractors instead of employees 😬🤦‍♂️

(Not talking about actual pizza restaurants like Pizza Hut or Papa John's, getting a pizza delivered online still owns)

Slack and Discord (though both are being enshittified pretty badly, there are still a lot of good communities based on both platforms).

Sites that mirror and archive all of those old 90s and 2000s text only or very image light sites that contain a wealth of information and would otherwise be lost to time.

It's like someone flipped a switch and said "ok now let's start making things lovely"

to echo everyone else, it should be obvious why this shift happened. someone did flip a switch, but the intent wasn't to make it lovely, the intent was to start profiting off of whatever the thing was. since it was free before, and awesome, obviously anything that makes money won't be as good as that previous iteration.

everything got worse and worse as the people responsible for those platforms started trying to squeeze more and more money out of them.

the only way things can stay free and not lovely is if they're run out of benevolence / as someone's personal project, or if they're run as a public service for everyone. the former might sporadically exist, for as long as that one guy cares about the thing, but it'll eventually shut down like all the ones before. the latter is impossible.

It’s obvious that they wanted to make money but it’s not so obvious why it starts happening all at once. There were a lot of good things still going straight through the 2008 crash and it’s weird that things would start getting worse after when they did and the economy was doing better.

true, but also lovely deals with record labels were not replaced by lovely deals with spotify. they both exist simultaneously and feed on each other, and it's both spotify execs and record label execs who profit from this poo poo. like to be clear, in the case of major artists on spotify, the deal isn't between spotify and the artist, it's between spotify and their label. the deal between the label and artist is a separate thing. so in the case of major label artists, spotify pays their lovely payouts to the label, not the artist, and the artist gets paid a percentage of that based on whatever their deal with the label is.

Let's also not discount the fact that part of Spotify's rise was allowing the record companies to take a substantial stake in Spotify itself, so the record companies are basically self dealing with the artist picking up the tab.

Educational YouTube is genuinely one of the best things in the world. This summer I binged Historia Civilis and Mentour Pilot and developed interests in Roman politics and aircraft crash investigations, which never would have happened otherwise. Last year it was religious history and American law through Religion for Breakfast and Legal Eagle.

YouTube has a higher bar to clear than Wikipedia in getting people to do free labor because videos are harder than text. But it’s pretty clear YouTube has a successful enough monetization model because these professionals are all willing to create these high quality videos on the side.

Came here to post this. Death to YouTube and everything because the platform itself sucks and will definitely enshittify until the last dollar is extracted, but I’ve learned *so much* through YouTube’s creators. The most niche subject probably has a handful of videos dedicated to it, if not a channel. It seemed to fill the hole that documentary TV stations left when they all switched to reality, but this is even better than what was on TV to begin with.

This is why specialized channels are great; because of them, you subscribe to all of these specialized interests and everything else can go gently caress itself.

Newtotse.com - Run by Helladamnleet, this site runs on vbulletin so it runs smoothly as hell, essentially an old-school feel with some added features.

Totseans.com - This place is a graveyard, unfortunately.
