What is F.E.A.R. F.E.A.R., also known as First Encounter Assault Recon, is not only a badass first person shooter series where you play as a host of characters, including Point Man, Sergeant Michael Becket and even villain Paxton Fettel, but also a survival horror series as well. The first game came out on PC on October 25th, 2005 with the last game coming out on June 21, 2011 and has not seen a release since. The first two videogames were developed by Monolith Productions (who also developed BLOOD and the Shadow of War series as of recent) with the last game being developed primarily by Day 1 studios. How does it play The gameplay strikes a balance, as said above, with first person shooter qualities and survival horror qualities. Throughout the game, the protagonists explore a series of locations to get to the bottom of a mystery that their superiors want them to investigate (at least in the first two games). Along the way, the player runs into a group of military personnel. In these battles, you can take cover, lean in the first one and of course shoot. But there's one more ability: Slo-mo reflexes. Your character has the ability to perceive time in a slow way but with his reflexes acting as if they were still present time speed due to your super human abilities. This can cause firefights to look very "matrixy" (if that's the right word). However, be alert as the enemies can kill you in only a few bullets which is true even for easy mode. There is parts, however, where you're just walking around abandoned areas. During these times you'll talk with your mission control who will relay new information that you may have otherwise not learned about. The environments usually have lore providing things scattered about the area. These include answering machines or even bodies that weren't killed in the most conventional way. These environments can lead the player into a sense of unease and uncertainty as they won't know what's around the corner. Is it multiplayer The third one is currently the only one with active PC multiplayer. The 2nd one works via openspy (although the servers are pretty dead), and the first (and F.E.A.R. Combat by extension) are kept up by community efforts. There was also F.E.A.R. online, but currently there's no effort to try to get that one working again. I will note that the 2nd and first one both have multiplayer still via the 360 though I'm unaware how active that multiplayer is. And F.E.A.R. 3 is not only a deathmatch type multiplayer game but you can go through the whole story with a co-op partner. I love the FEAR series, and recently I've been really into Trepang2 on steam, which is kind of an indie spiritual successor to FEAR. you're a supersoldiery dude with slowmo and invisibility powers who fights an evil corporation and paranormal stuff. it also has a big emphasis on statisfying VFX during gunfights, and intelligent behavior of the enemies and constant callouts from them on what they're doing. It's one of the only games where I've seen the AI set up like proper suppressing fire on the last area they saw you to keep you pinned in cover or try and hit you when you're invisible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsAQ2mmCqv4 - trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDaXsRCRfT4 - NPCs fighting which really kinda shows how their ragdolls and behavior works the ragdoll physics are robust enough that you can grab a dude as a human shield, then hurl him with super strength into the legs of his own buddies and they'll all go down like bowling pins. They can get up afterwards, unless you pull the pin on one of the nades the guy you threw, in which case they will be turned into spaghetti There's also Selaco, which has a more bright and retro aesthetic but similar gameplay, with brutal high stakes gunfights against intelligent enemies in a highly destructible environment. It shares more DNA with something like Duke Nukem 3D, with a higher emphasis on exploration when you arent in combat (FEAR wasn't as keen on secrets as earlier FPS games) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozxnmQyzll4 - trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XZF52x-4eI - VFX demo Selaco has a demo out on steam right now that is great fun if you wanna try it out. apologies for the lovely post formatting, i am not an expert on it. I wanted to embed some gifs but god knows how that poo poo works now that everything is an .mp4

FEAR's the best, FEAR 2 is a complete downgrade but still pretty fun, FEAR 3 is garbage despite what some people think, it makes you feel like a dork.

It's a real shame FEAR never got the modding that HL2 did because I would kill for some more campaigns. Especially ironic since a lot of the big HL2 gameplay mods, the ones which try and make the shooting feel better are obviously inspired by FEAR's combat.

I like the gun that makes people into skeletons faster than a normal gun.

Did anyone else play the Coop Warfare mod for FEAR? It was one of those horde style mods with a million enemies in every map and never enough health, but I remember having a blast with it over LAN back in high school. There were a bunch of maps, like a remake of a Goldeneye level (with a secret room, only present in one single version of the mod) and a giant airport-looking level with a movie theater playing the music video to Star Trekkin' on a loop at the end.

Honestly sounds like a good game. I've seen a little bit of Trepang2 before and it honestly looks like FEAR but not made by the games from FEAR.
