That means that it will be exceptionally mild when we get it.

Everyone is already sick all the time and in and out of the ER like it's just another regular thing. Testing and reporting = over. We don't do that anymore. And we don't do pandemics anymore. Anything new that happens will be labeled minor outbreaks of things that are MILD and FINE. Hooray for normalcy *cough*

I dread my cross-team meetings with more thsn 2-3 people in them because the first ten minutes always turn into how everyone has been sick lately. Had two people today complaining about how "a cold" hit them earlier in the week and they've been crashing in the early afternoon since then. Very normal

If bird flu starts causing mysterious illness in people consuming dairy it's going to be framed as "that's just COVID, which is mild now."

China stays winning. It's time for round 2
USDA bird flu research in China sparks congressional concern - Washington Examiner

www.washingtonexaminer.com - Fri, 26 Apr 2024 posted:

Research on highly pathogenic strains of bird flu conducted by the Department of Agriculture in affiliation with Chinese Communist Party scientific researchers is drawing renewed scrutiny from representatives in Congress following the growing outbreak of bird flu in dairy cows this month.

A bipartisan group of representatives in the House began probing the USDA this month regarding two collaborative research projects with the Chinese Academy of Sciences conducting potentially dangerous research on several strains of avian influenza that are genetically similar to the H5N1 strain currently circulating in the United States.

This heightened scrutiny comes as outside observers of the bird flu outbreak note that the situation is eerily similar to the secrecy of January and February 2020 before the official beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-VA) joined a group of 20 legislators in sending a letter to USDA Secretary Tom Vilkas on April 12, saying they were “disturbed” that U.S. taxpayer funds were being allocated for research that “could potentially generate dangerous new lab-created virus strains that threaten our national security and public health.”

Griffith told the Washington Examiner this week that he is highly concerned about the USDA’s research, considering the history of biosecurity failures in U.S.-funded virus research in China.

“I am skeptical with U.S. money going to viral research in China after the failures of EcoHealth Alliance and Wuhan Institute of Virology to properly document their research on coronavirus,” Griffith said.

Of chief concern for the representatives is a project between the USDA and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, or CAS, to examine the avian flu viruses that “pose the greatest current risk to both animals and humans.” Experimentation in the project includes “wet-lab virology” performed on living organisms and in test tubes.

The Chinese government lists CAS as an integral part of the CCP’s organizational structure. CAS is also tied to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which conducted controversial research on SARS-CoV viruses in the years preceding the COVID-19 pandemic.

A spokesperson for the USDA responded to the Washington Examiner’s comment by saying that the suspicion cast in the letter is “far off base from what’s actually transpiring.”

“Any time these members of Congress have questions for USDA about our research or our commitment to helping America’s farmers mitigate animal diseases like highly pathogenic avian influenza, they should reach out to us directly before putting misinformation in a press release or public letter,” the USDA spokesperson said.

The spokesperson for the agency also said that U.S. funding is only going toward the American portion of the project, with no tax dollars going to Chinese research partners.

“Because animal diseases present a global threat, it is common for international researchers to conduct independent research that’s connected to the same end goal,” the spokesperson said.

At least three women were infected with HIV after ‘vampire facials’

www.nytimes.com - Fri, 26 Apr 2024 posted:

At least three women were infected with HIV during cosmetic “vampire facial” procedures at an unlicensed spa in Albuquerque, New Mexico, federal officials said Thursday. It is the first time that HIV transmission through cosmetic injection services has been documented, they said.

The three were among a cluster of five people sharing highly similar HIV strains, four of whom had undergone a procedure called platelet-rich plasma microneedling at the spa. The fifth individual, a man, had a sexual relationship with one of the women.

Investigators still do not know the precise source of the contamination. A 2018 HIV diagnosis in a patron who reported having no behavioral risk factors led to a public health investigation when the woman said she had received the cosmetic procedure.

An inspection of the spa found unlabeled tubes of blood lying on a kitchen counter, others stored along with food in a refrigerator, and unwrapped syringes in drawers and trash cans.

The facility also appeared to be reusing disposable equipment intended for single use only, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Reading The Viral Underclass by Steven Thrasher and it's so incredibly cspam.

Just an endless critique on how capitalism is reinforcing viruses and how both parties policies have resulted in the current situation.

I think someone in this thread recommended it and I'm echoing that recommendation. It's well written and an easy but heavy read.

Question for the Australian goons, is the TGA going to approve doses of the vaccine that are more effective against "newer" strains any time soon? I ask as I'm coming up to my due date for another booster, but I had my last booster with the non-XBB variant, as TGA hadn't said anything publicly about any plans whatsoever to approve XBB vaccines in Australia...only for them to proudly announce a few days after my dose that it'd be ready in December 2023 for everyone

I have a trip in a few weeks to see my parents for their birthdays/before their last overseas vacation, & also see my sister who's flying in from overseas: I'd like to be up to date due to my permanent health conditions, but if they're going to approve a new one shortly, waiting a bit might be more beneficial.
