Arguing about metal lashings and structural integrity misses the fact that a bunch of VC people thought it was artistic to stack a bunch of IBCs in the mud, and people thought it would be cool to climb on it. No part of it was cool or interesting.

Gumball Gumption posted:Also most of those kooky art folks have always been right wing rugged individualist types. That's really the thing with hippies, that whole philosophy is about believing yourself to be some flavor of magical ubermensch. Something about anarchist projects starting out as vaguely anti-capitalist, then getting co-opted by capital with no push back whatsoever, then sending the cops to run over people protesting your mud orgy seems incredibly on-the-nose.

Al! posted:i mean from an art historical perspective this isnt saying the thing you think its saying. abex was seen as a uniquely american movement, directly opposed to the old world french salon style of painting that was still very much what people thought of when they thought of "a painting". theres also a lot of other postwar stuff going on in new york that gave rise to the loose collection of artists known as abstract expressionists. It didn't need to "invent abstract expressionism" to shape the professional art culture. They just needed to financially support something that wasn't communist, and slopping random blobs of paint on a canvas is as free of ideology as you can get. Art movements don't exist in a vacuum, they are largely a result of the tastes of their buyers and the desires of their patronage networks, which is why every painting in the middle ages was either a scene from the bible or the portrait of some fopish dandy lord, that's who had enough money buy a painting.
