there's a stop sign near me with a sign under it that says right turns don't have to stop. and people use it that way. it's fuckin weird and i don't think i've seen such ambiguity in a stop sign ever elsewhere.

It just means people at that stop sign need to stop, but other traffic not at that stop sign, in a different part of the town, another country or maybe going the other direction, they don't have to stop.

Apparently in some parts of the US you only have to stop if there's another car coming, which kind of defeats the purpose of controlling the intersection with a sign that specifically instructs drivers to stop. What you actually need in that situation is a yield sign.

Judging by the folks who drive through my neighborhood, it means "slow slightly, but proceed straight into the intersection to menace the crowd of pedestrians actively using the crosswalk on the other side with your hulking vehicle."

when i lived in the south they had the stop signs back like a block from where you were actually meant to stop. hosed up. i guess maybe it was there because people were too slow at reactions or drunk to register the sign quickly. drivers were so bad there, every green light was half wasted.

It means you have to stop. Just you, no one else. Look at all of them, rolling carefree through the intersection. Why do YOU have to stop?! hosed if I know, you just do. And you know sure as poo poo that if you ignored the sign just once, that'd be the one drat time a cop was around to nail your rear end. Life sucks.
