Have you guys heard about this? Apparently the UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has vowed to ban the controversial Bully XL breed, saying the dogs were "a danger to our communities" and would be banned by the end of the year. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-66820591 quote:The American bully XL dog is to be banned, the prime minister has announced, following the death of a man in a suspected attack. If you've built up a trust relationship through training, that communication is bidirectional. Example: We had kids over and the littlest one decided on trying to pick up our dogs. The first thing the dogs did was give us the side eye - which meant, roughly, "hey buddy im super uncomfortable here can you intervene for me"; if you pay attention to dogs in groups, they will side eye each other too, it's a universal "I wouldn't try that if I were you, buddy" / "Dont't.". It was all they needed to do, because being a responsible dog owner means looking out for those signals and acting before things escalate — we made up an excuse and moved them somewhere else and they were fine. If we hadn't intervened at that stage, the next thing they would have done would have been growling — this is a "I am stressed, you're pissing me off, back off now Please". If the dog can't remove themselves from the situation, and they're past the point of growling, they'll snap — if you're a good owner then you've taught good biting hibition, this won't be hard enough to break skin. One time our eldest (rip T_T) snapped at me because she reeeeallly did not want to go out but it was obvious she needed to piss, it didn't break skin (ahe caught mostly air, deliberately afaict), and you could see her do an "oh poo poo" or whatever the dog equivalent of it is shortly after, she inspected where she'd snapped at me and then licked me as an apology. Another time, we gave them raw chicken wings, and the second oldest spent like 20 minutes licking it, nervous to bite into it because it was too much like human skin — we had to convince her it was ok before she actually went for it. But then loving useless dog owners who want a dog as a Thing don't bother setting up that trust relationship and building that communication through training, so you have an already stressed dog (It's stressed because it doesn't understand what's expected and what the owner wants), and then on top of that a tiny being invading their personal space, and their only verbal way of communicating has been skinner boxed out of it through hitting or shouting — what other way can it communicate "stay the gently caress away from me"?
