General, the Punta Arenas airbase is in rough shape. The PLA mined the field and dragged obstacles all over it. Runway 30 still has destroyed vehicles, old railway cars, and buried mines. However, we have been able to de-mine a portion of the airport and the main apron of the civilian side. We were also able to remove the obstacles on those few areas. Naval Fleet & Aviation Orders - Operation Durazno, 10 APR 10

The rapid fall of the Chinese offensive in Chile, and the subsequent retaking of Punta Arenas, has been one of the first major signs of allied success in The Long Afternoon War. We have worked hard to push out the invaders, and finally we are enjoying the fruits of our labors. However, the Chilean town of Porvenir and much of the populated areas of southern Argentina remain within Chinese hands. The next stage to our campaign will be crossing into Tierra del Fuego and retaking Ushuaia, Rio Grande, and Port Williams. To this end, a new area of operations has been designated for the southern regions of Tierra del Fuego - AO Cartridge.

We have had a two-week ceasefire while the Chinese forces withdrew from Punta Arenas and reinforced Tierra del Fuego. It is expected that they have dug in and will firmly resist any crossing. Chilean, Peruvian, Brazilian, and Argentine marine amphibious forces are currently preparing for this effort - marshaling near military arsenals at Antofagasta, Chile and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They've had weeks to prepare, but this will not be an easy task.

AO Dart (Patagonian Fjords)

In the fjords, our fleets have sailed southeast as far as the Magdalena Channel to reoccupy large parts of the Magellan Strait. With the PLAN withdrawing from the area, our forces are able to dominate the region - for now. Argentine Marines aboard the ARA Veinticinco de Mayo have secured a strategic radar station and a number of Chinese outposts along the Magellan, in particular Isla Carlos III, and are defending the region from aircraft and littoral raiders as best they can. Additional anti-air equipment may be required to protect these assets. Several cities, ports and airfields have been retaken as well, though many of them were sabotaged by the withdrawing Chinese forces. It may take extensive time, supplies, and repairs in order to put them all in working order. Still, a degree of normalcy has returned to Patagonia. For two weeks at least.

Our submarine forces in the west have regrouped and resupplied their fuel, food, and munitions at the Puerto Montt Naval Base, and moved into a defensive position near WP Grau. They were able to view the extensive Chinese efforts to withdraw their forces from the Magellan Strait and reconstitute the 2nd PLAN Fleet. While they were not permitted to engage the transport effort during the ceasefire, the CNS Carrera and the CNS O'Higgins remain ready to respond to any attacks in the AO.



AO Arrow (Punta Arenas)

With the end of the ceasefire drawing near, CSAD has organized a major strike operation against Porvenir Airfield and its defenders (including an SA-10 and HQ-7 SAM site, and several air defense battalions). To this end, the South America Combined Armada will be putting its might behind the effort and has moved several air units forward. The ARA 25 de Mayo is now much further along the Magellan Strait and Ford Squadron is now capable of threatening much of Tierra del Fuego. The USN F-14 Tomcats of Dodge flight are now moved south to Rio Chico, and the USMC F/A-18 Hornets of Devil flight are now moved to Rio Gallegos, in order to reduce travel times as the war moves south. The British Harriers of Enfield flight remain at Bella Vista for now, though there has been much discussion of moving the jump jets ever closer to the frontlines.

This Air Force-led operation intends to strike hard against the PLA near their western-most airfield of Porvenir. Taking out their SA-10 SAM site will allow our attack aircraft to freely bomb their newly-erected defenses and hopefully break their will to fight near the Magellan. Dodge will provide a dedicated CAP to our forces, though the F-16s and F/A-18s will retain some self-defense capabilities with their long-range AMRAAMs. Devil will assist Jedi and Rattler in their SEAD mission, using a mixture of HARMS and bombs to safely dismantle their defenses and allow our aircraft into the airspace. They will then be followed by strike units from Enfield who will have Mavericks and targeting pods to identify ground targets and deliver precise attacks against them, and Ford, who will finish off the burning strike points with rockets and bombs.



AO Stone (Argentine Sea)

There has been a significant shifting of naval forces in the Argentine Sea. The heavily-armed 1st PLAN Fleet, with its large flagship the DDG Hangzhou, has continued to withdraw southeast towards the 4th PLAN Fleet and the CV Liaoning carrier. Meanwhile, the 3rd PLAN Fleet continues to lurk near the Falkland Islands. Responding to these shifts, the S Tupi has withdrawn to resume its protection of the Brazilian Mina Gerais carrier and the allied fleets near Comodoro Rivadavia. In her place, the Ecuadorian submarine BAE Shyri has arrived on station in AO Stone and will be joining the ARA San Juan in defending Rio Gallegos and monitoring the outlet of the Magellan Strait.

The SEAD operation will have a rolling wagon wheel like this:


We assemble at the green area just west of Punta Arenas at various altitudes. (Tentative, considering moving the box slightly farther west).

We initiate attacks from roughly the same direction with both Anti-Radiation Missiles and Air Launched Decoys. We will attempt to use MQM-170 ground launched drones as well.

The return route is strict as not to stray into other airspaces or weapon engagement zones.

Alrigh, we'll be doing CAP again, dissapointing as that might be to our pilots more accustomed to bombtrucking, at Punta Arenas to cover our SEAD-flights in their hunt for SA-10:s, and assist at that with our TALD:s.

Right, lads, Brass's given me a chance at redemption after the kerfuffle two weeks ago. The ego remains bruised, but there's no salve for such a wound quite like payback. We'll wait for MATADOR to get up, after checking all systems green and making sure the crew's loaded the right ordnance. We're looking at four self-lasing Maverick E's and two Sidearms for self-defence, along with one targeting pod of course for aforementioned lasing.

Lads, I suggest we scan the channel before crossing I don't much care for learning that lesson again, identify any ships which might challenge our crossing, and then pick our targets as we cross. Good? Good.

In the event of enemy air, or ADA coming back up, our egress will be INTO the wind, WEST, back to our HOLD. Additionally, once we're out of missiles, we'll cross back over to Punta Arenas and fly HOME to rearm, if we have time.



Any questions on the op?

Right, so I've heard grumblings that "we don't like the rumbling of our painted dirt airfield". For now, tough. We've sent a forward team to Punto Arenas and to Rio Gallegos to assist in any repairs or aid they can give, of course, but their jobs are to provide training as to the proper brewing of a cuppa. If we're lucky, they'll've done a good enough job to make the Punta Arenas airport lounge habitable, though I somehow doubt they'll have scones or crumpets. As such, landing on their absolutely luxurious and spacious runway segment is to be on an EMERGENCY BASIS ONLY. They've suffered enough under the occupation and the shelling, we can give them a bit of time to recover first.

In summary, Take-off, proceed to HOLD, attack HOLE, return HOME except under significant mismanagement of your own fuel.

While I try to figure out how to fly this ATR76 and deliver some valuable cargo in MSFS, and catch up with this pretty bulky thread, can someone summarise a bit the lore behind... us?
I did read the op, I understand the global scenario but in game who is who? Is it always pvp, meaning both parties are flown by actual people, or it's pve where some marvellous goon leader set up a campaign with objectives to kill/bomb (meaning bogies are not actual people)? What decides who's advancing and who's retreating?
As for the civilian missions, am I always working for the same faction or do I need to chose each time (or at least not fly a mission for the bads so to speak)?

Very good questions! Our flights are PVE, players always fly for the "good guys" so to speak while mountains of work are done by our mission makers to reflect the state of the world at the beginning of each op.

In addition to the mission maker, a few goons have an extra role as a Commander. One goon plays as the CSAD Supreme Commander, and primarily makes the broad sweeping decisions and goals. Then the Air Force Commander, Ground Forces Commander, and Fleet Commander make their decisions on how to achieve the Supreme Commander's objectives.

Playing the role of "The Bad Guy", Vähä is the GM and resolves troop engagements and sets the enemy responses to our actions.

For the Mobility Flights, all of the flights are designed to benefit CSAD, so except by not being done the MSFS flights never help the bad guys.

The first post has a MIRO board which lays out most of what's happened and gives the who's who, as well, which I'll link below. Hope this helped!

We will perform SEAD at the SA10 site at or south Porvenir. We will carry a mixed loadout of harms, jsows(unitary) and amraams.
Plan is to trail dodge by about 20nm and wait for them to launch TALDs at the site in order to wake it up. We will not get closer to the SA10 than 40nm, instead prefer to wheel south. If it wakes up, we'll launch our HARMs in PP(missile-loft) mode (for quick reaction) at the track radar (code:110). JSOWS will then be primarily targeted against SHORADS at the SAM site (WP3) and near the airstrip at Porvenir (WP4). TALD flight time is estimated to be no more than 6 minutes, they're considered scrapped after this time has elapsed after Dodge launches them.

As a continguency: if the SA10 site does not go active, the JSOWS are targeted against the SA10 track radar. HARMS will be in this case be targeted according to original plan if the site goes active against the sams. Otherwise, the HARMs will be used against targets of opportunity. The porvenir waypoint (WP3) may not be an accurate location of the SA10. If the site is not found, use targeting pods and ground radar to detect the site likely south of the town.

Second element is equipped for self-escort
The entire flight will have sufficient fuel to stay on station for a while (~40 minutes unengaged).

Bingo is 4000lb. Air refuel is available at primarily Texaco, but should not be needed.

A group of Skyhawks is called a "nuisance"...

We're striking the SA-10 site and supporting units in and around Puntas Arenas. Nearly every friendly airborne asset in theater is participating in this attack and Ford's mission will be to cleanup launchers, search radars, and any other enemy units in and around the SAM site after other flights have degraded the SAM's tracking radars. While the SA-10 radar should be destroyed by friendly ARM launches there is a high probability of this high value target being defended by a wide variety of SHORAD. There is also an SA-11 BUK system in the area that may still be functional. Once the SA-10 tracking radars have been degraded we will move in quickly, proactively suppress SHORAD systems with our Shrikes and strike anything around the damaged SAM site. In and out as quickly as possible, no loitering. The exact location of the SAM is not known at this time but we should have little trouble finding it from the smoke and fire after it has been hit by friendly ARMs.

Right, we'll keep this nice and short. We lost one pilot to an ill-advised attempt at sampling some "biscuits" from the Punta Arenas flight lounge and he was down for the count, and one other pilot was called away for a very important meeting, hush hush and all that. No losses of airframe, no losses of pilots, four expended AGM-65E2's and one overall excellent mission for Enfield.

I took off on MATADOR, got locked up by one of the OHP Frigates on the way to the HOLD point, and turned to engage on OLE. Missed one Maverick, must've been another American one, got one good hit on a SA-11 launcher, one good hit on a gun truck. Must've got nicked a bit on a pass, the last Maverick wouldn't fire. Which is a shame, I was lasing a MI-24 and was a bit excited to have an A/A kill with an AGM, but oh well.

Nothing significant to report on landing, textbook vertical landing.

Gentlemen, it's been a genuine honor. In time, I may return, but in the mean time I have some things to do back across the pond. Hush hush things, of course. Godspeed, and God Save the Queen.

ELINT and OSINT intercept indicate that command and control breakdowns are crippling PLA operations and their hasty withdrawal, Operation Divine Wind presents a prime opportunity to maintain pressure and prevent their reorganization. Targeting the "templated" HQ-7 site at Caleta Rosario (either ship-to-shore or air-to-ground), the lone SAM defense protecting the western approach into Inutil Bay, is critical to neutralizing local enemy air defense capabilities. Once this site is neutralized, a strike package can exploit terrain masking to assault the PLAGF BSA at CRUCE ONAISSIN, as well as the nearby PLA 7th Brigade just to the north, preventing their consolidation and regrouping. Flying below 500m ASL and 300 AGL (HARD CEILING of 500m) will challenge the templated S300s at Tolhuin and Rio Grande to lock onto our aircraft effectively. This coordinated operation will exploit PLA disarray, deny them time to fortify defenses or mount counterattacks and sustain the momentum of our advance in the region. Hey there Gilbercitos, going to make this one short and sweet, have a plane full of grumpy cargo, and the sooner I land the better. Anyway, let's sign off on this thing and hit the skies!


Departure from Morón was nothing to write home about, but I guess it was since I'm posting about it in this blog. The Airbus wasn't fully loaded with fuel, so while we had a modestly heavy cargo, she still lept off the runway without much fuss. Climb out and cruise was also "honky-dory", if I remember my American slang correctly. Gear up, flaps up, feet up.





"God can't this thing go any faster? Are we there yet?"

Early approach was smooth, but as we neared the airport, a line of storm clouds kicked up a pretty decent wall of rain and dust. Seeing that Río Turbio is an uncontrolled airport, and lacks any instrument approaches, the captain and I discussed our options. After one last review of weather at the airport, we decided to slowly proceed inbound above traffic pattern altitude, and if we could not clearly find the runway, or if conditions continued to deteriorate, we'd divert to El Calafate.



Thankfully, we were picked up the approach lights about 8 miles out, and quickly configured for an uneventful landing.

Even with the war swelling the population, Río Turbio is still a pretty sleepy hamlet with no real night life.
On the plus side, I was informed the company credit card was unfrozen, so it's a steak night. You gotta treat yourself, right?

As discussed earlier, tthe rest of Devil Squadron deployed, so by my count, they are sitting at 10 USMC F/-18Cs out of 12 in the squadron (2x shot down across two missions).

Wherever the Devils are, they get Stinger protection from USMC LAAD units.

In a major operation, CSAD forces struck the heart of the PLA air defenses on the west coast of Tierra del Fuego. There was a fierce resistance by both ground defenses and PLAAF fighter aircrafts, and many allied aircraft were lost: 3x F-16, 1x F-18, 2x F-14, 5x Skyhawk. Their sacrifices will be mourned, but in the end we were victorious. Significant amounts of PLA war material was destroyed, and their effort to hold the line at Porvenir Airport was soundly defeated.



Despite China's attempt to dig in, we've been able to devastate their defenses and open up much of northern Tierra del Fuego to air attack. After a few days to regroup, we are now focusing our efforts on a major Brigade Supply Area (BSA) at Cruce Onaissin. This target has been ripening on the vine for quite some time, and finally it is ready to be plucked. CSAD joint military intelligence has done a mission workup that they have coined Operation Divine Wind. Meanwhile, the war continues in other parts of the combat theatre. Our submarines have been resupplied and a ready to engage, and our fleets have moved into defensive positions to secure our gains. A number of airbases are reporting supply shortages of various kinds, particularly the newly-regained Rio Gallegos and Punta Arenas airports. Our fight isn't over.

The joint CSAD forces will rally near WP Mary, above Isla Dawson, before heading into the attack. The F/A-18 Hornets of Devil squadron will provide CAP on this operation - protecting the area and ensuring that our attack aircraft will remain unmolested. Once air superiority has been gained, the F-16s of Rattler squadron will perform a SEAD strike against the remaining HQ-7 SAM site (A1) near Caleta Rosario. With that defense taken out, our strike aircraft of Ford's A-4 Skyhawks and Dodge's F-14 Tomcats will attack the BSA site (A2) and nearby 7th BDE (A3). Satellite reconnaissance does not indicate organic air defenses - the targets are instead largely relying on a pair of S-300 sites located to the southeast. While these defenses are formidable, military intel believes that nearby terrain has created a radar gap that can be exploited. Ford and Dodge will fly below 150m / 500 ft and thereby evade the S-300s and strike the rear area successfully. Deliver your ordnance promptly and then exit the area to the northeast near WP Huracan. As ordered, our Chilean submarine group is to engage the 2nd PLAN Fleet and push them out of the area of operations. Ideally we would like to threaten their access to Ushuaia and Port Williams, and jeopardize their supply route to southern Tierra del Fuego.

Similarly, the Argentine and Ecuadorian submarine group is to engage the 1st PLAN Fleet and prevent them from freely regrouping. They have split into a number of surface action groups (SAGs) that are defending several large groups of landing ships, as well as a critical supply route from WP Beach to the Islas Malvinas. Seek out one of the frigate groups and send them to the bottom.

US DOD update:

After multiple contract disputes and "refinement" of the fielding timeline, the subcontractor refurbishing old QF-4s into F-4Es ready to be re-combat coded into the arsenal say that they should be ready to go in two weeks. If it's not ready this time, the US vows it won't get fooled again.

In the meantime, the pilots sent to the states to train up on QF-4s have been at Holloman Air Force Base for months now, and they've probably hiked every inch of Cloudcroft has to offer.

Hi, I don't know what Springfield is being asked to do, but please move us up to Rio Gallegos too. This will allow a full combat load instead of wasting pylons on ordnance, even though we need to wait 45min for SEAD flight to AAR before their 15min ingress to suppress.

The Plan
Waypoints subject to whims of mission maker. Remember to reconfirm on the cockpit before takeoff or during cruise.

Fly to PLATE to avoid going to near enemy positions. Form up with other flights at EVITA. Descend and cross over SCDW. Maintain 2~3nm from shore on ingress to CSS: PLAGF BSA, and no greater than 150ft altitude. Use your navigation computer, increase altitude if needed for drop parameters shortly after making landfall. Right hand turn to egress nap-o-the-earth to SCDW. After SCDW increase altitude as desired. Avoid nearing enemy lines as you RTB.

If a sudden delay is required, pull back and orbit SCDW on the deck, or EVITA at altitude.

TF 'Lanza' Mission - Operation Arco

We just received orders in from High command, the big boss wants the fly boys to have a better view of the southern skies, and we have just the thing in reserve to make that happen.



This here is the SABER radar, courtesy of our Brazilian allies. It is a field deployable early warning 3D radar system with IFF capabilities, and it's lightweight and rugged design allows it to be deployed in adverse locations. We have been ordered to deploy it at the glacier radar site that has been consistently contested over the last few weeks, where it'll give a wide view of the Magellan strait and towards the South. The alpine conditions will be challenging, but I have faith in your ability to carry this tasking out.

Mission Objectives

We've found a nice location SW of Punta Arenas to bring the cargo as close as possible via land routes to the Glacier site, to cut down on transit times while sling loading, The Taskforce departed the PA Airport earlier and are on standby at the IP for the mission.

Get your bearings once the cargo is ready to load, and pick up the 3 crates and small team of operators for the equipment, and proceed South to the Glacier site. Once the radar and the avengers start deploying, we'll have a couple minutes where the new installation is extremely vulnerable. Pilot's, you must do everything possible to keep that site safe while they setup, as it's imperative that this radar site enters operation. There have been intermittent reports of some PLA patrol aircraft in the region, so stay on your toes.

Tasking/Flight Profile/Terrain Considerations

- Use your ADF's to find the LZ and starting point, it's easy to get lost in the fjords.
- Stay as low as practicable to avoid detection by any PLAN vessels on the horizon to the South, or any PLAAF aircraft in the area
- Deliver the cargo near the Radio transmission tower.
- Keep an eye on the winds as you come over ridges and up hills, the top can be much more gusty and throw you out of controlled flight.

Well, finally it is time to blow poo poo up on the ground, and it will be just sligthly dangerous due to altitude constraits putting us in small arms range.

Mission

Mission is simple, together with multiple other flights bomb the everloving gently caress out of enemy troops and equipment in one pass at a CSS PLAGF BSA at WP3, alternative target CSS BDE at WP4, but that has heavier equipment so our effectiveness might be diminished. Bombing altitude will be low, at max 500ft from sea level.

Flight plan

Take of from SAWC, turn to WP1 at EVITA which acts as IP, climb to 32,000'.
After order to go given, fly to WP2 at SCDW, from there turn to our target at WP3 and drop to 500'.
Drop our Mk-82AIR:s at WP3 in one pass.
Continue same course over TdF, once Atlantic reached turn north, follow the cost until over mainland.
From there climb to cruise altitude and navigate back to SAWC at WP5.

2x AIM-9, 18x Mk-82AIR, 2x Ex.Fuel.

So I will change this up before mission time to have some level of dive-table versus level bombing to account for bleeding energy and popping up to avoid AAA.

Nav plan will be the same, but likely loadout and attack profile need to be reworked.

We did an early run with a pop up and rocket attack that went well a few months back.

Yeah. I really wanted the variety of executing a new profile and skillset (flying dead rear end level and on speed/climb for reticle accuracy), but sounds like that’s too dangerous for this mission. Will look at shallow dive profiles with mk82 snakeyes.

The mk84 centerline is fun but reasonable chance of self or other flight frag….

Strike

The enemy is having a rough time of it, let's make it worse...

You've seen the Admiral's review of the situation and we've been tasked to give the PLA further encouragement on going on away. Our mission is to strike a command and supply point south east of our last objective. The enemy has a long range SAM system located south of the objective, well within range of our target so to avoid its tender ministrations we will be staying low this sortie. The target is in a valley with ridge-lines to the north and south. On ingress we will remain below 500' feet with a popup near the objective to deliver our ordinance before getting back into the dirt and continuing outbound to point HURICAN before returning to base. If multiple passes are required we will extend out north east from the objective at a low altitude before returning for a popup reattack. Do not remain exposed above the ridge-line for more than a few moments.

As always our greatest threats will be AAA and manpads. Keep your nose moving, and pay attention to your surroundings; don't give them an easy shot.

Carry the bombs you like, but for lead, I am now going to opt for 1x mk84 centerline, and 2x mk83s on the wings. Lighter than a bunch of mk-82s in a bundle, more fuel efficient this side of carrying tanks, faster and slicker due to less drag. Doesn't spread as nice on drop, but big bombs are big.

Dive table:
Approach around 500, pop up to 3,000+
Release: ~500 knots
Release altitude: 1,500 feet
Dive ~20 degrees
Mil Reticle: 52
Release: Ripple long delay (they'l still all land within 50 feet of each other most likely)
Fuze: Nose/tail

With that loadout, no bags required, and (some) fuel to spare, assuming SEAD does its job on time. In test, HQ-7s are now very lethal with an STR and still no joke without one, so if that's on our RWR at objective, a real decision point of ablative armor versus scrub mission based on SEAD incomplete.

It will be harder to maintain speed with the mk82 bundle, so maybe just take centerline and leave your wings clean or bring fuel if you want and ditch it before attack run. MOBILITY FLIGHT UPDATES AND RESULTS





Transfer of Apache Parts to fix Apaches onboard the RN Carrier is complete. The Fleet Air Arm of the RN, under which the British Army apaches are assigned currently, grants their use in the AO for the Ground Commander.

Airfield survey was completed but as far as GM knows, ground commanders will not make new FARPs. Is this correct?

Seabees deployed to Puerto Santa Cruz. They're now in the AO. However, the USMC F-18s have left the airport already to Rio Gallegos. If ground commander wants to repair Punta Arenas Airbase, these seabees will accelerate the process.

Task: a flight to move Seabees from Puerto Santa Cruz to Punta Arenas, and that will open up one of the runways fully upon completion.

Flight AAR:

Overall, went well. 3 took off, 3 landed, weapons generally on target. Destroyed one building/ammo bunker, some trucks, damaged/destroyed trucks and a CSS-7 TEL unit (by dumb luck it was in among the trucks). We carried a mix of mk82, mk83, and mk84.

Only real improves were some communication issues between Jedi, us, and the GCI, which resulted in us entering the objective a bit later than intended. And Prime did something or other to end up in a fuel emergency and a very high risk landing on an ostensibly closed runway, but he made it.

Some photos. I did not have time or awareness to take screenshots while flying low level and as flight lead, so these are largely from others' posts or just pictures after going home and sitting in the pattern to let the various fuel emergency planes land first at Punta Arenas.
