I'm typing some expectations here, just so that we can be on the same page going forward. I'd guesstimate that both in Arma 3 and DCS, we will take the dial of nerdiness and click it one step higher from here on out. To not feel like we're just pulling the rug, the next Arma 3 mission will serve as a sort of onboarding activity where we'll have a training map open before go time, and we'll help anyone get ready.

Arma Expectations:

In Arma 3 missions, the focus is on preserving teams and individuals, following orders, and avoiding freelancing. The expectation is for participants to have basic knowledge of Arma, including controls, the use of TFAR radio, knowledge of weapons, map familiarity, and understanding miscellaneous systems. The mindset should revolve around teamwork and discipline, with an emphasis on not rushing off due to boredom. The mission organizers, Elendil, Zeph, and Jerik, run Antistasi and Liberation regularly, providing low-stakes opportunities for players to familiarize themselves with Arma. Efforts will be made to offer preparation for complex systems that may appear in missions. Respawns will be highly limited, likely narrowed down into a single group respawn at middle point.

To achieve these expectations, participants are encouraged to engage with the community on Discord, practice on GoonTTI servers, and ensure readiness for mission days by preparing during the week leading up to it. Air Goons provides various resources, including practice servers and a dynamic campaign, to help players get acquainted with mod and control issues.

Some of the ways you can read about what is a good starter knowledge is the Air Goons SOP: https://www.airgoons.com/w/Standard_Operating_Procedures

I will uh, take driving more seriously next time.

And remind myself that Arma only tracks velocity, not momentum when it comes to collision damage.

The Argentine and Brazilian naval fleets are to continue their previous taskings. There may have been some delays in carrying these orders out, but we cannot afford waiting any longer. The Argentine fleet is to return to port and repair damaged ships, while the Brazilian fleet is set to sail out to sea. The Minas Gerais and her escorts must maintain the threat against Islas Malvinas and prevent the PLAN from freely maneuvering or reinforcing their naval groups. All sailors and aviators are to maintain a state of combat readiness, along with standing alert fighters and contact with P3 Orion aerial maritime reconnaissance.

The ARA San Juan and her commander Cpt. "Alchenar" are ordered to sail south, cautiously probing for the 1st PLAN fleet. This fleet has consistently managed to elude aerial sweeps, while still delivering cruise missile attacks against the Argentine fleet. It's time to make contact. Perform a stealthy reconnaissance and ascertain the location and composition of this fleet. Attacking the ships is of a secondary importance - the admiralty wants to find their weak points and exploit them. Be aware of the following intel: 1st PLAN fleet includes at least two Type 052 Destroyers, some four frigates of unknown type, and likely the Hangzhou, a Sovremenny-class destroyer of USSR-origin. The fleet is screened by Type 037 Corvettes or their equivalent Tarantul-style ships captured from Middle East and Africa. This SAG escorts and screens for a fairly significant military sealift consisting of bulk freighters, oil tankers, landing ships, and container ships, most of civilian origin, but some PLAN Auxiliary ships that are extremely similar to the Canadian MV Asterix and its like. Most of these ships are incapable of defending themselves, minus perhaps a few rifles on board and the possibility of a MANPADS (Man portable air defence system, think of iglas and stingers, shoulder launched missiles with short range).

My intent: in the absence of other naval assets I will establish contact with and determine the disposition of 1st PLAN Fleet, specifically forces protecting sealift moving to the beach and the location of the SAG conducting operations further out to sea. I assume PLAN will be conducting sea control and ASW operations in a zone parallel with their land forces to screen them and protect unloading operations. I will seek to define this area and then bypass it to the East rather than penetrate it directly, attempting to make contact with the main PLAN SAG. Having ascertained their location and as much information on composition as possible, I will then break contact. I will strike targets of opportunity only if I can do so without risking counter attack.

Mission report: ARA San Juan 4-5th March 2010

Patrol commenced at 2000 local. I proceeded East at cruise speed, come up to periscope depth every hour on the hour to take ELINT readings. Signals suggested 2 vessels acting as a forward screen, with emissions from 2 helicopters detected further south (at one point in the patrol emissions from 3 helicopters at once were detected, but otherwise never more than two).

At 0424Z(0024 Local) I encountered a Type 037-IG Houxin Gunship at S52`25`18, W66`06`47. I observed it to pass North and East over me and then an hour later reacquired it heading due south at W66. I summarised that this represented the northern extent of PLAN patrol areas. I then shadowed the Gunboat south.

Heading south I continued to take ELINT soundings on the hour, which allowed me to describe a box within which PLAN aircraft were operating. I continued until 0900Z (0500 Local), at which point I detected a Navigation and Surface to Air FCR at close range to the East. After diving and then surfacing 5 minutes later I was able to determine the contact's course and plotted an intercept. At 0930Z sonar resolved the contact as a MV Asterix type vessel - known from intel to be PLAN operated in the area. Noting the target was high value and appeared to be unescorted I resolved to attack. As I was directly in the MV's course I maneuvered SE for a perpendicular attack run.

At 0942Z and with the MV 3NM distant sonar resolved an underwater contact approximately 6.6nm away and on the opposite side of the ship. I paused my attack on the possibility that it was an escorting PLAN submarine, but at 0947Z the contact was positively resolved as biologics. At the local time was dawn I made a shallow approach, raising the periscope briefly to confirm there were no close emitters.
At 0948Z I launched a 4 NT47 torpedoes at the target at a range of 2NM and turned on a NE heading. At 0950Z indications of 3 torpedo impacts were observed.

I then sprinted for 15 minutes at full speed before slowing to a creep and continuing NE. Having put the last position of the MV over the horizon at 1451Z I briefly raised periscope and detected emissions from multiple surface and air contacts in close proximity. I continued on a bearing of 69.9 degrees (back-tracing the MV's course) until 2112Z whereupon I raised periscope again, at this point all radar emitters were located within the ordinary observed patrol box and I summarised that I had successfully evaded detection.

At the time of writing I am continuing to follow a reciprocal course to the PLAN MV of 57 deg at S52`25`25, W64`04`44. I am commencing snorkelling to recharge my batteries and intend to attempt to make contact with any PLAN naval forces IVO the Falklands to establish their operational area.

I attach a video of the patrol on the popular webhosting internet page known as 'youtube': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhijOZ4KOcc

I will do it. I will sink the Moskva.

e: seriously, accidentally done the shaping for this operation. PLAN is now aware that they have a hostile submarine operating to the East of their patrol zone and sitting astride their sea supply route between the beach and the Falklands AOR. They have to either extend that patrol zone to the east, accept the risk to their shipping, or cease whatever operations were underway. If they extend the patrol zone then that will thin out the ASW presence around the beach which will give me an opportunity to re-approach and attack. I can then go to ground to evade counter-attack and when you see the big moskva shaped explosions the airforce can come in to sweep away any asw air assets and maybe attack a frigate or two and give me an escape hatch. Joint operations across two games!

9 MAR S42 San Suan - Mission Log

On approaching the Falkland Islands I observed a PLAN Square Tie Radar operating at the following coordinates.

Plotting a course north and to the west of the islands I detected indications of intense ASW activity, at one point emissions from 7 air contacts were observed in the vicinity south and west of the Square Tie. I summarised that as indications of a significant PLAN air buildup on the West Falklands.

At approximately 0700 ZULU I detected a vessel immediately identified as a Civilian commercial trawler.

Detected no other contacts and judging the ASW activity in the shallows to be too intense to attempt to penetrate, I set a Westerly course to see if I could detect any PLAN surface contacts operating in the area but no contact made.

As of 00:05:19 ZULU I am at S54'35, W64'43. An uneventful 24 hours.

San Juan - Mission Report 17 March 2010

Plotted a course south intending to intercept the invasion fleet on return to Ushuaia in or around the La Marie Strait. An Emcon sounding revealed two likely ASW patrol contacts, one appearing south of the invasion area and one appearing in a blocking position directly SW. I replotted a course around the observed blocking patrol and decided to risk a deep sprint followed by snorkelling once past it to reach my intercept point.

I bypassed the patrol area, but unfortunately while snorkelling detected close EMCON and was forced to go deep and evade East. Active Sonarbuoys were detected in my wake but no attack was prosecuted. Approximately 19 hours into mission I arrived at the intercept point and waited. The ASW contact that prosecuted me appeared to have returned to its standing patrol. The single contact that had been at the invasion area had progressively been noted moving SE along the coastline and by 24 hours into mission was approximately 25-30NM NW of my position at S54'37'08, W64'51'00.

No surface contacts detected.

In my sleep God gave me a vision where he showed me a shipwreck getting blown up by Chinese rockets.
