I'm excited to CFIT into a new part of the world.

Flying an A4 and having a friendly SAM down an enemy interceptor in front of our flight:

DCS with goons is fun and chilled. Having a basic joystick helps, but some people play with a Gamepad like absolute maniacs.

I'm going to have to buy a new nvme just for dcs maps and f-16 skins.

Facetracking with a basic webcam works really well, I did it for years. The delanclip is fairly cheap and a significant upgrade, and is what I had before the final transition to mega-dork-vr-haver.

The best thing about this campaign is no idiot f-18 hornet pilots trying to say that it, in any way, competes with the superior vipenation.

The A4, despite being free, is one of the best modules in the game. The real price to entry? Learning to taxi using differential breaking, the toughest challenge in DCS. Also, as a bonus, you shoot shrikes and sidewinders when the plane goes WowowueiueuaeehhaheahehaehaHHAEHAEH instead of watching some idiot MFD.

The F5, conversely, can suck a dick. SU25 for life baby!

Baguettes 1 and 2 ready for action. Glad the team has a superior (French-made) plane available to support the escort.

When it comes to tasking the flight if Mirage 2000Cs, we're best flying a barcap at high altitude and vectors for intercepts at need, or an escort for strike.

We have legs, especially at altitude, as we'll take a tank by default and can go Hella fast. Will be sporting two excellent fox1s and two good Fox2s per plane. Our radar is very capable but has no data link.

The Long Afternoon War - Mission 1 - Pontiac 1 AAR

Flight Members:
Pontiac 1-1 | Prawned
Pontiac 1-2 | BlueNexa

Tasking: TARCAP
Kills: 4x J-7
Losses: Zero
Expended: 3x Super 530D, 2x Magic 2

Summary:

We departed Rio Turbio and proceeded to our assigned TARCAP orbit between Waypoints 1 and 2, intended to provide air cover for the A-4 Skyhawks assigned to strike the enemy fleet.

Immediately upon reaching WP1 we were vectored onto a pair of J-7s coming in low and fast. Fortunately we had climbed to ideal engagement altitude of 30'000ft and were able to down the first J-7 without difficulty via Super 530D. The second bogey managed to evade radar lock initially, but we were able to dive on him and eliminate the target with a single Magic II.

We then returned to orbit altitude of 30k and on to WP2, when we were soon vectored onto another pair of J-7s. The engagement played out much the same way, with both Pontiac 1 Mirages firing their Super 530Ds down onto the enemy, resulting in one bogey splashed but again the second J-7 was able to beam and dodged the SARH missile. Bogey 2 then manoeuvered onto tail of Pontiac 1-2 before firing a missile - BlueNexa skilfully deployed her countermeasures and evaded the missile, before I was able to come around and fire a Magic II which successfully strike the final J-7.

The area quietened down as we returned to our CAP patrol, before eventually returning to base with textbook landings. An excellent first mission and great success, pictures to follow in due course.

Congrats to BlueNexa on her first campaign mission with AirGoons, engaging the enemy and returning in one piece! As a special honour, she was able to engage and down Deadseed (an experienced F-16 pilot) in a pre-game warmup bout :captainpop:

Pontiac 1, AAR - Campaign Day 2

Pontiac 1 flight, comprised of two Mirage 2000Cs, took off from home base at Rio Turbio as the sun rose in front of us. Pontiac 2's flight of three Mirages followed closely behind.

We proceeded to our Waypoint 1 at 30'000ft for intercept tasking, and were quickly called onto a pair of enemy J-7s moving onto our strikers low and fast. We engaged first with our 530D SARH missiles, Pontiac 1-1 scored a hit but the second bogey was able to evade Pontiac 1-2s missile - fortunately she was able to quickly swing around behind the enemy, and downed him with a Magic II before he could escape or fire back.

We began our climb back to cruising altitude but were quickly vectored into a trio of J-7s approaching fast from bearing 180. We turned on, but in our haste our flight separated. Pontiac 1-1 successfully engaged one J-7 with his second Super 530D, while Pontiac 1-2 attempted to get a lock she was hit by a SAM launched from the nearby PLA fleet. The same fleet launched at Pontiac 1-1 who went defensive, and managed to evade. He fired a first Magic II which missed, then realised he was in the mix at low-alt with two J-7s. Fortunately, Pontiac 1-1 was able to splash one bandit with his last missile and finish the final bogey with guns during an intense dogfight.

The aforesaid dogfight severely depleted Pontiac 1-1s fuel, and he was forced to land on a highway on the friendly side of the front-lines, some 100 miles south of Rio Turbio. The plane is in good order and can be recovered, and if refueled should be able to take off from the highway and RTB.

Who's got the lead in kills so far? It looks like Prawned had 3 kills in that last sortie, including a hot dang gun kill! (it still counts as a gun kill if the enemy succumbs to the damage a few minutes later, right?) Any aces yet?

Also, how's the overall air war looking, it seems like the strike craft are taking it on the chin while the air superiority craft are doing pretty well.

I managed four kills last mission, so on 7 at the moment.

Pontiac 1 AAR for 18 November 2023

Two ship of Mirage 2000Cs successfully loaded up and launched without incident, travelling to our BARCAP route along the border of the same fence and within support range of the strikers.

We were vectored onto two bogeys, which turned out to be PLAAF J-7s and in fact was a three ship in close formation. We successfully engaged and downed all three enemy fighters, but expended most of our munitions and returned to base to re-arm and re-fuel.

After topping the tanks, we returned to our CAP route for a short time, however the skies were clear and we returned home a second time without engaging any additional enemies and without incident. All in all, a solid mission.

Pontiac 1 Flight Plan

We'll be loaded up with 2x Magic IIs, 2x Matra 530Ds, a centerline tank and an eclair pod set to 48 flares. I'm not sure if we're still based out of Rio Turbio or if we moved to Gallegos after the last mission, as three of us landed at the latter due to fuel shortages.

For CAP we prefer a simpler flight plan, along the fence of our CAP area so that we can be quickly vectored onto targets threatening the strike. Our Waypoint 1 should be home base, with Waypoints 2 and 3 forming the CAP line along the fence. Waypoint 4 should be a rendezvous point 30-40 miles back from the fence in case we need a position at which we can regroup safely. Rough diagram below.

Pontiac 1 Flight

A fairly standard CAP and uneventful flight.

We took off from Rio Turbio as a two-ship Mirage 2000C, and made our way the 80km to our first CAP waypoint - South of Rio Gallegos. We then patrolled along the northern coast for some time, before being vectored onto two J7s which were poking their head north of their side of the fence.

Our initial missiles, two Fox 1s and a Fox 2, missed due to evasive manouevres and countermeasures from the J7s. Pontiac 1-1 ended up in a turn fight, 1-2 was able to come in and eliminate one J7 and then got stuck chasing the second J7 which in turn was chasing 1-1! That continued for some time, the J7 showing uncharacteristic energy retention and fuel efficiency. 1-1 had to disengage and begin a return flight to Rio Gallegos due to fuel constraints, whereafter the second J7 mysteriously exploded - likely due to an earlier gun strike by 1-2.

1-1 was forced to land on the road 20km short of Rio Gallegos, but the landing was successful and the plane undamaged. A fuel truck was dispatched to get it refueled. 1-2 landed successfully at Rio Gallegos.

Two kills, no losses.

PONTIAC 1

Combat Air Patrol, north of the fence line which marks the heaviest of the PLA air defences.

Our in depth recon indicates excellent flying conditions.

We will seek to engage enemy fighter craft and protect friendly strikers. We expect to see J7s, and perhaps a few J11s. We have managed tk eliminate a few J11s but expect the PLAAF to continue to field a limited amount.

Pontiac will take off from Rio Turbio with burners as it is a short runway, then immediately throttle back to mil for a climb to angels 32 while on route to our CAP waypoints. We will patrol said waypoints while waiting for a vector to enemy targets. Priority will be keeping situational awareness and not overextending.

Loadout will be 2 x 530Ds, 2 x Magic II, centerline tank, éclair pod for countermeasures.

PONTIAC 1 FLIGHT PLAN

FLIGHT
2-4x Mirage 2000Cs

TASKING
We are tasked with CAP today, although as enemy air is expected to be light and there is a flight of Tomcats already in the air for CAP, we're taking on a dual role and sporting a few of bombs as well. Our flight has suffered some combat attrition, and it's likely we will only have 2-3 planes in the air.

We are based out of Rio Turbio (WP1), and will take off on burners due to the short runway and heavier loadout. We'll then proceed through FORK (WP2), to our holding station at COLO (WP3). I've requested our WP4 be Punta Arenas to assist with reference, and for target acquisition for bombing runs.

We will stay on station at WP3 until tasked, but I will push that we be given the opportunity to drop our bombs quickly so that they can be used. If we are called to intercept, A2G ordinance will need to be jettisoned.

MAP

WAYPOINTS
WP1 - Rio Turbio
WP2 - FORK
WP3 - COLO
WP4 - Punta Arenas

LOADOUT
Centerline fuel, Eclair Pod (48x flares or pilot preference), 2x Magic II, 2x Matra 530D, 2x GBU12, 2x Mk-82.
The GBUs are subject to change, if no-one wants to buddy lase for us as the M2K cannot take a laser targeting pod.

PONTIAC 1 AAR

Keeping it brief as we don't have much to report after last night's action.

We started as a two-ship set up for CAP, as after planning we realised that the M2K has an avionics limitation that doesn't allow it to carry fox1 missiles alongside ground ordinance.

During startup, Pontiac 1-2 suffered debilitating technical difficulties which prevented her from joining the flight, and so it ended up being a solo mission. I went on CAP, and it was otherwise uneventful except a vector onto what was believed to be a PLA VIP departing from Punta Arenas. Unfortunately his direction of travelling natural notched on my radar, and so struggled to get a radar lock before being targeted and fired upoon by the naval assets offshore. I was forced evasive and back North, by which time the VIP had snuck off like a rat.

Stayed on station, a brief refuel and back, then back to base for a Miller. No enemy air assets engaged, the skies were quiet.
