FORD 1 & FORD 2

  • Assets: 5× A-4E Skyhawks
  • Frequency : 131.50MHz
  • Airbase: ARA Veinticinco de Mayo (Tower: 225.00MHz, TCN: 25X (VCM), ICLS: 1)
  • Loadout: Varying, see slides.
  • Condition: Alpha - Orbit steer point 2 until local air superiority is achieved by Pontiac.

Intent : Sink or render inoperable a PLAN Type 054 frigate guarding the Strait of Magellan.

Gameplan

The invaders have stationed a guided missile frigate in the Strait of Magellan, guarding the bend in the Strait leading to Puntas Arenas. Command wants it sunk and our squadron has been tasked to put it on the bottom. Normally attacking such a vessel would be suicide for our fighters but we have several advantages:

  • The Type 054 frigate is primarily armed with anti-ship weaponry and while it can launch surface to air missiles its VSL magazines will likely have a limited number of rounds to expend.
  • The rugged mountainous terrain of our land provides ample cover and the opportunity to sucker the enemy into wasting SAM shots needlessly.
  • The Type 054 has laughably poor coverage (see insert) with its close in weapon systems.

Our plan is to duck into the mountains north of the target while one flight member at a time pokes their head above the peaks to taunt the frigate into firing one or more SAMs. Once missiles are in the air the pilot will dive back below mountain top level to evade the missiles. When we are confident the frigate has expended its available missiles or has decided to stop wasting them on us, we will reform and rush out to sea to attack. The CWIS on this frigate can only cover arcs directly to the sides of the ship. We will attack from the stern or bow of the vessel, where their guns cannot reach us. We will not loiter and reattack but continue on course after dropping our ordinance to assure that we do not stray into the ship's field of fire. While the CWIS should not be a factor with this attack profile, small arms may be expected. Follow the Strait home.

  • Ford flights will depart mother flying the ship's 090 radial and climbing to 1000' before entering a holding pattern 10 miles from the boat until all Ford members have rejoined.
  • Once collected, Fords will continue on route to steer point 2 (FP on map) while remaining below mountain top level.
  • Ford flights will orbit steer point 2 until Pontiac flight has confirmed it controls the skies over the Strait of Magellan, then continue to steer point 3 (IP on the map).
  • At steer point 3 (IP) Fords will once again enter an orbit below mountain top level while each member of Ford flights in turn ascends above mountain top level to bait the PLAN warship into firing an anti-aircraft missile before descending back into safety behind a mountain to spoil the shot.
  • Once it has been determined that the vessel has expended all anti-aircraft missiles or has chosen to cease firing needlessly, we will strike.
  • Fords will assume a trail formation and manoeuvre to approach the enemy vessel directly from the stern or bow (see slide inset) at low altitude (400-500') and high speed (400kts) and attack as the ship comes into range. After attacking, flight members will continue on same course until well clear of the ship's weapon range.
  • Fords will follow the Strait of Magellan home while reforming. Steer point 5 is approximately where we should pick up mother's TACAN signal.

Loadouts:

Most members of Ford flights will be armed with Zuni rockets. While lacking the pure explosive power needed to destroy a naval vessel, we will be bringing a lot of them, and our pilots are experienced in their employment.

Ford 1-2 has opt'd for high drag bombs and a pair of sidewinders, just in case Pontiac misses a hostile aircraft or doesn't exist come game day.

Ford 1-1 will be armed entirely with high drag bombs. While snakeyes are an unconventional weapon to use against a warship, our low altitude high speed attack profile is ideal for their employment, and it will look totally sick if Mederlok and I can pull it off.

Notes:

  • The weather is awful with a low ceiling, fog banks, rain squalls, and limited visibility. Figure out how to use the terrain avoidance mode of your radar so you don't fly into a mountain side. Remember to pay attention to your surroundings and do not fly into a fellow flight member.
  • Our landing at the boat will likely be CASE II or CASE III. DCS's carrier logic does not handle multiple returning birds in CASE II/III and will assign marshal points all over space instead of a nice stack. We'll be ignoring that and establish our own marshal 15nm behind the boat on the reciprocal of the BRC. We'll trap in order of fuel remaining.
  • A tanker will (probably) be available at the boat. I don't expect anyone to actually be able to use the tanker, but it's there if anyone wants to take a shot.
  • Our divert field is Puerto Natales, roughly 100mn north of mother. That is a long way to go if you're short on gas, so decide early if you think you won't be able to make the boat.

Thank you to Big Soda for the graphics, they're pretty awesome.

Mission
TASMO/SUPPORT

After the events of our last sortie, Ford flight blacked out on the way home. We came to to find ourselves aboard the Brazilian aircraft carrier, Nael Minas Gerais, with no idea how we got there. Our trap sheets are blank and the Gerais's LSO cannot recall waving any Argentinian scooters aboard but the boat's flight maintainers did find numerous airline bottles of liquor scattered around our cockpits which were quietly disposed of.

Command has prepared a large strike package to attack and sink a PLAN destroyer causing trouble in the Atlantic. We're running support on this mission and our job will be to clean up remaining enemy vessels after the pointy nose go fast assets finish sinking the destroyer itself. The remainder of the enemy fleet is made up of corvettes and frigates which we have plenty of experience dealing with.

Excellent work last mission. Technically, no members of Ford flight were lost (except those of us that got lost) and several PLA air superiority fighters were downed by Skyhawks. Credit to our air battle managers for getting Big Soda into position for the kills.

This time we're back to our bread and butter. Creating artificial reefs from Chinese vessels. The PLA appears to be getting ready to embark their forces on transport ships and command would like us to convince them not to. The fleet of haulers is defended on the water by a single Type 054 frigate. We know how to kill these without too much trouble and we will be helped by our friends in Gary flight who will fire a number of anti-ship missiles at the frigate to pave the way for Ford. The fleet is also defended by ground based air defense systems which we will have to contend with.

The plan is simple. Fly to Mt. Conico and hide behind it until Pontiac has secured the air. Gary will then begin their attack and we will follow in behind their anti-ship missiles and sink whatever survives the barrage.

TASMO

Welcome back Ford. Our mission this week is relatively simple; continue the attack on the PLAN fleet we struck last sortie and/or attack targets of opportunity should the fleet no longer be present. Intel is not certain if the PLAN frigate guarding the fleet has been sunk so keep an eye out for that; we will strike it first if necessary. It is also possible that corvettes remain but they are less important than the frigate and transports. If the entire fleet has weighed anchor and departed our ABM will assign new tasking. The land based air defenses that gave us so much trouble last sortie have presumably moved north and should no longer be a factor but let's not assume they haven't left a trap for us. Venom will be providing SEAD over the AO during our operation and will let us know when they are confident that no SA-11s are laying in wait for us and shoot at any surprises that pop up.

Last sortie we lost a pilot (still MIA) to the PLAN corvettes patrolling the Otway Sound. Today we have an opportunity for some payback. Our primary targets are the enemy's remaining warship assets in the sound. We do not know their exact location at this time. It is possible they are still in the sound or have departed south through the Geronimo Strait heading for open waters. Regardless, we will find them and sink them. In the mean time keep your eyes and ears open for any sign of our downed wingmate. It is possible he ejected and evaded capture.

Should we be unable to find the PLAN vessels and/or have weapons and fuel remaining after sinking them we will continue our patrol to take a peak at Carlos Island. PLA marines have attempted to take this island several times and we would like to continue to dissuade them from doing so. Should fuel permit we may extended our patrol to the Magdalena Canal. There have been reports of submarine activity in the area. Stay alert for any other hostile activity. We are not required to attack everything but command will want accurate position and unit composition of any hostile or unknown activity along our patrol route to assist planning future sorties.

Strike

Where the f*ck are we!?

When command said they had a mission for short field specialists I was expecting something... wetter. Rio Chico is going to be our home this sortie and its a tight fit. Our mission is to support a major attack on the isthmus. Our target is the 27th ARTY BN located roughly in the center of the isthmus approximately a mile south west of a warehousing facility and town surrounded by featureless desert.

We'll be attempting to attack through a thinner part of the enemy lines west of the target. After rendezvousing at HOLD, we'll wait for code words MATADOR and OLE signaling CAP and SEAD are on station and strikes may commence. We'll then head to IP where the first element will attempt to attack the target while the second element remains near IP providing cover for the attacking element and calling out SAM launches. Once the lead element has completely its strike it will return to IP and elements will switch rolls.

The terrain is very flat with no cover. Do not linger over the target. Attack whatever you can as quickly as you can and return to IP. Drop flares liberally. If time permits we will rearm at SWAC and come back for a second round, there is no need to conserve ammo and counter measures.

Avoid flying south from the target; the PLA still has significant SAM defenses in that area.

  • Strike by element any artillery targets at TGT. One element attacks while the other provides cover and spots for SAM launches.
  • Return to SWAC for rearm and refuel if cleared for follow up strikes.

Notes

  • Assume there will numerous AAA systems and shoulder fired SAMs in the area. Our weapons necessitate short engagement ranges so be ready to break off attacks and employ counter measure the moment the covering element calls a missile attack.
  • Rio Chico is very small with limited facilities. There is only a single taxiway at one end of the the runway so we must take care not to cause traffic jams.
  • Steerpoint 4, LAND, is 5 miles west of Rio Chico. Turning to 080 will put you on runway heading. Land on the numbers and you should slow in time for the taxiway to parking. Don't forget your spoilers. Park as far back into the lot as you can.

Reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Whatever Ford did last week, command liked it so they're sending us back to do it again. We're going to attack the PLA's 3rd BDE on the eastern edge of AO Bolt and try to knock out their artillery. We'll rendezvous en-route to IP where we'll hold until our friends in Jedi have suppressed enemy air defenses and we are cleared by Vulture to begin strikes. Running the enemy out of missiles does "technically" suppress their air defenses...

The PLA have made a naval push around Rio Gallegos and it looks like they're planning to land a major force in the area. Someone must have told them Ford was in town.

Command has planned a large operation to attrit their landing forces while they're still embarked. Normally Ford would not have much to contribute to this operation given the fleet's long range defenses and our... modest technical capabilities; but the strikers with proper anti-ship missiles need a distraction to help get their rounds on target and we need a mission.

For most of the war our AGM-45 Shrikes have been useless so the lunatics in the ammo department took one apart and figured out why. The seeker heads are installed upside down. No idea how that can happen and there's no time to fix them so we're going to be using them (and us) as decoys.

Since Rio Gallegos is out of commission we'll be taking off from Puerto Natales, where we diverted after our last sortie. We'll head east until reaching our rendezvous point (PLATE) with Dodge who will be attacking the fleet with ASMs. We will ingress ahead of dodge, skimming the ground and sea until entering effective Shrike range on the fleet where we will throw our defective weapons in their faces. The hope is the fleet will be so busy shredding our trash for us they will not see Dodge's functional weapons coming up behind us and we might get some hits on the landing ships with our rockets.

Dodge is considerably faster than we are. Dodge will hold at the rendezvous point until Ford reaches our IP (BOCA), when they will begin their attack run.

Our primary goal is to fill the sky near the enemy fleet with enough junk to blind them to Dodge's attack; any of our weapons that manage to function and strike an enemy vessel is a bonus. After expending our Shrikes we will attempt to hit any PLAN landing ship within range before departing.

  • Return to Puerto Natales.

Notes

  • Puerto Natales is a small field with a lot of jets based at it. We will tune the air tower after start and follow ATC instructions.
  • The waypoint list is not lying. We will be skimming the ocean during our attack. Review radar altimeter functionality before takeoff. Please see the link below and highly suggest binding buttons you can easily reach to turn the autopilot on and off and turn altitude hold on and off.
  • We will be operating at our fuel limits. No choice, its a long flight and we need to bring sufficient ordinance to complete our task. Review tanking procedures.
  • Mederlock will be providing a review of our tactics enroute. He put in a lot of work figuring this out. Please see squadron instructional annex for extreme low altitude flying.
  • It is entirely possible that enemy air craft will leak through, be prepared to defend yourself or for a mission scrub if CAP is overwhelmed.
  • Weather is terrible and our home field will be socked in on our return. Follow the ATC's instructions.

Flight Plan
  • Depart Puerto Natales and rendezvous at the mouth of the river south of the airfield.
  • Patrol down river to DIEGO and waypoint 2 attacking identified hostiles.
  • Fuel and weapons permitting, continue patrol past horseshoe island searching for other hostile forces.
  • Return to Puerto Natales.

Notes

  • Puerto Natales is a small field with a lot of jets based at it. We will tune the air tower after start and follow ATC instructions.
  • There is a high possibility of friendly units in close proximity to enemy forces. Identify targets prior to attack.

Strike

I'd like you to go blow up Isla Carlos III...

The Admiral certainly knows the way to an attack pilot's heart. The PLA is setting up in Isla Carlos, again. They still haven't learned their lesson so we're going out there with a massive strike package to remove them. Elements from multiple flights will be participating in this operation. Dodge and Devil will be providing CAP, Springfield will be striking other targets in the AO and Rattler providing SAM suppression. We'll also have to keep an eye out for a C-130 flight, Ascot, and not collide with them as they will be using the same Fjords for cover that we are.

We'll depart the Mayo when Dodge and Devil are approximately 15 minutes away from the target area. I don't know how long we'll have to wait but that will give us time to debug any issues; we have not launched from the Mayo in quite some time. Our flight plan will have us hiding behind the mountain range north of the Strait where we will wait until Rattler and Enfield have had time to perform any suppression of obvious enemy air defenses. One the code word Olé has been transmitted we will rush in around the point and plaster the northern site of Isla Carlos. Ordinance permitting we will also strike the southern portion of the island. It is a short flight so we are going loaded for bear.

While it is foolish of the PLA to continue to try to occupy this island they are not fools. Expect more air defenses than previous missions. Manpads and AAA is guaranteed. Enfield and Rattler will attempt to locate and destroy short range SAM systems such as SA-8 and SA-15s but they're tricky units to deal with. We are carrying a full load of flares for this operation and should not be shy to use them. We'll try to stay at a reasonably high altitude of 8000' over the target to avoid AAA fire and give us more time to react to SAM shots but it is inevitable we will lose altitude during the attack so keep moving.

Do not target fixate. Pay attention to what is going on outside your cockpit and take defensive measures against any missile launch.

Flight Plan
  • Launch 15 minutes to DODGE/DEVIL's arrival and rendezvous en-route to RDV.
  • Fly to the IP and orbit until code-work OLÉ.
  • Attack Isla Carlos's northern site at TGT. Reserve ammo if possible for an attack on the southern site.
  • Return to MOTHER.

Notes
  • The best option is an attack similar to last sortie where each element rolls in on target in turn with the lagging element providing over watch until their turn to attack. Enfield will also be assisting in spotting enemy fire. Extend out from the target to get out of manpad range before turning for reattack.
  • Do not past the no fly line. Other flights will be working in that area and it is exposed to enemy long range SAM systems.

(RL events have me rushing a bit this week, sorry about that)

The Admiral wants our radar site back so we're going to clear out the bad guys and open the way for the Marines to reoccupy the mountain top. The flight to the target area will be standard fare for Ford at this point; stay below the mountain tops to avoid tipping off the enemy that we are coming. When we are several miles from the target Ford will climb above the target site to give sufficient altitude for attack runs and time to react to manpad fire. Our orders are to strike enemy units around the radar while avoiding damage to the radar itself. We will load lighter weapons than usual for this purpose, Mk-82s or MK-20s and FFAR rockets instead of our favorite Zunis.

After clearing enemy defenses from W1, should fuel permit, we will continue south to perform a recon in force at W2 and W3.

DEAD

A group of Skyhawks is called a "nuisance"...

We're striking the SA-10 site and supporting units in and around Puntas Arenas. Nearly every friendly airborne asset in theater is participating in this attack and Ford's mission will be to cleanup launchers, search radars, and any other enemy units in and around the SAM site after other flights have degraded the SAM's tracking radars. While the SA-10 radar should be destroyed by friendly ARM launches there is a high probability of this high value target being defended by a wide variety of SHORAD. There is also an SA-11 BUK system in the area that may still be functional. Once the SA-10 tracking radars have been degraded we will move in quickly, proactively suppress SHORAD systems with our Shrikes and strike anything around the damaged SAM site. In and out as quickly as possible, no loitering. The exact location of the SAM is not known at this time but we should have little trouble finding it from the smoke and fire after it has been hit by friendly ARMs.

The enemy is having a rough time of it, let's make it worse...

You've seen the Admiral's review of the situation and we've been tasked to give the PLA further encouragement on going on away. Our mission is to strike a command and supply point south east of our last objective. The enemy has a long range SAM system located south of the objective, well within range of our target so to avoid its tender ministrations we will be staying low this sortie. The target is in a valley with ridge-lines to the north and south. On ingress we will remain below 500' feet with a popup near the objective to deliver our ordinance before getting back into the dirt and continuing outbound to point HURICAN before returning to base. If multiple passes are required we will extend out north east from the objective at a low altitude before returning for a popup reattack. Do not remain exposed above the ridge-line for more than a few moments.

As always our greatest threats will be AAA and manpads. Keep your nose moving, and pay attention to your surroundings; don't give them an easy shot.
