The Nam Allegory is really beaten over your head. To make it less on the nose they made all of asia a country. Truly White Guy Sci-fi  the movie is a lot closer to Avatar I, Robot Elysium than the praisers will probably want to admit

Avatar had the whole James Cameron thing going for it. This director is not that level, even if the lame story may feel on the same level. I’d say this film is on par with Elysium for like mid-tier / mid-budget scifi that is ultimately forgettable. Too bad we live in an era where everything has to be either a HUGE MINDNUMBING SUCCESS or it will absolutely kill the genre that it exists in as producers and studios are so adverse to risks now. So basically this film is going to kill any attempts at mid-tier / mid-budget scifi for the foreseeable future.

I’m not dancing on its grave or anything but it just feels like everything that isn’t an existing franchise has to make a billion dollars and become some sort of new bankable franchise to be considered a success now. At least anything in-genre for like scifi. But yeah I had high hopes for this film but Elysium is a great parallel.

You said it is going to "kill any hopes for mid level sci fi for the foreseeable future" which is a really strong take to make on a movie that hasn't even had its run yet! I hope that it is profitable, because its actually quite an achievement in that Gareth made it for quite cheap but it looks spectacular. Theres a really fun story he gave in an interview about getting them to greenlight it. He got some money to scout some locations and he used like half to actually go scout but he used the other half to go to ILM and ask them to put some CGI stuff ontop of the footage he shot with his own camera as a POC of overlaying effects without needing greenscreen setup. It blew the studios away so they gave him the money to film this. Being able to shoot whatever angles you want without worrying about green screen setup is a novel concept for movies like this because the on location shooting is very evident and helps sell the world. It looks good.

The sentient bipedal suicide bombs telling Alison Janney that they were honored to serve under her before shambling like metal linebackers off to their doom is one of the most surreal things i’ve seen in a movie in quite some time. This movie has some really cool stuff in it!! The aforementioned suicide bomb robots, I love how the first one was like kinda nervous / looking at his buddy like why would you program it to be nervous lol. There is a bit where they brain scan a guy who has been dead for hours and put his brain scan in a robot body and he comes to life instantly asking about his wife and kids and poo poo and theyre trying to get useful information out of him before his lovely dead brain scan fails in 30 seconds. Very creepy!!! Dude cradling his robot gf who got blowed up by a cop grenade (given to her by another robot who is also a cop) a monkey blowing up a tank (honestly my favorite part) after the robot holding the detonator got shot

I extremely enjoyed this movie. The art direction and aesthetic is great and the pacing is fantastic. The story is very conventional and the acting is narrow and really only as good as it needs to be to serve the real basic story but the execution was great, the visual effects were fantastic, and there were a ton of fantastic moments. I hope it makes a lot of money because I would love more of these. My absolute favorite moment, in addition to the suicide tin cans mentioned above was the musical cue where Radiohead kicked in when the VTOLs were coming in hot for a landing. Just absolutely perfect. The scene at the wooden bridge where the US Army tanks show up basically reversing the intro to Terminator 2 and giving AT-AT vibes was just so dope too, thematically and visually. ephori fucked around with this message at 07:05 on Sep 30, 2023 |

I enjoyed it, saw it on the local LieMAX and it looked fantastic, both in picture quality and the VFX. Because most of the robots were bipedal I assume it was a relatively simple rotoscope over human actors which sold it a lot more than all the Marvel/DC superhero acrobatics which just look worse at 3 times the budget. So many unique designs as well, loved those little suicide bomber robots, and how the AI cities looked, reminded me a bit of the Deus Ex prequel games. I did see someone point out that (aside from the obvious Vietnam/Afghanistan references (was the general's speech in the beginning a real one about Al-Qaeda but with AI swapped in?)) it does have echoes of orientalism in how all of the synths are Asian in appearance, but I'll leave it to someone with that heritage to write interrogate that in depth.

The robots in the film are portrayed doing a bunch of stuff that actual robots wouldn't do: eating, sleeping, praying, conducting funerals, watching robot porn. The movie seems to beat the point over and over that these are just people who The West (as it is called multiple times) see as soulless drones. The actual General Westmoreland (the not-at-all subtle model for Ralph Ineson's character) famously said “The Oriental doesn’t put the same high price on life as does the Westerner. Life is plentiful, life is cheap in the Orient,” and that's the racist attitude I think the movie wants you to believe the US Army has about the people (in this case, shown as manufactured, to make the "plentiful" and "cheap" explicit) of "New Asia".

Was looking up the trivia and technical specs on IMDb, and apparently this is the camera the film was shot with - a £4,000 pro-sumer camera. Also, the child actor for Alphie was so good, apparently she was only 7 during the shoot.

Yeah, this movie was Gareth Edwards saying “America bad” for 2 hours using robots in the same way “Barbie” was 2 hours of Greta Gerwig saying “Patriachy bad”. Both movies had nonsensical stories where things happened just to exposit to the audience (what should be) an obvious message in an engaging way. Barbie was arguably more effective at it, but big loving kudos to Edwards for getting 80mil to poo poo over the US.
