ok ep 8 started off really slow but the pay-off and cliffhanger were worth it, imo. also always appreciate a villain with the 100% insanity+happy-go-lucky god combo

You might have said it was slow, but nearly the entire first half I was in anticipation like "Spirit, what actually happened when you were a kid?" I better not be disappointed by it turning out to be nothing.

This whole arc is weird. The backstory for Spirit is appreciated but the execution is off.

that's how i'm feeling after this newest ep yeah. i appreciated the deeper delve into her backstory but this battle is kinda going all over the place. some neat visuals tho, and the bits of romcom between the two villains was some nice levity

I def agree with this. I like the characters in Shy a lot, both their visual design and their characterization. The fighting is, uh, pretty bad.

Kufufu is a lot of fun, though, and her asking for more head pats from Tzveta had me smiling ear to ear.

So people who have read the manga, I have to ask, do our heroes, like, win eventually? Is there a point where they make headway against the antagonists or refute the bad guys?

Yes But in terms of headwday It doesn't feel like they can significantly impede Stigma and his attacks become more and more frequent. There are some good heart-to-hearts though

after ep 10 i'm leaning harder in this direction, the pacing issues are really coming to a head now that this battle is stretching out into a fourth episode. i appreciated Shy finally becoming a powerhouse at least but drat you could've halved Pesha's mother's backstory and not make it full-on misery porn. is the pacing this wonky in the manga too?

The backstory and characterization stuff is good and I don't feel like it's overstretched. If the author and director can keep delivering this then fine why not make everyone's initial backstories 6 hours long. Even if it's kind of weird from a real-fight perspective, the fight stuff also works well as a visual metaphor for how everyone is feeling in the moment so it's fine imo.

That said I am concerned this is all we're getting for this go-around depending on what the episode order was on this season.

Same.

Also I want to issue a slight correction to my last post. The fight isn't just a metaphor for how they're feeling. It's canonically physically related to how they're feeling since the strength of their superpowers are based on the moment to moment magnitude of their emotional stability and conviction to help others.

Coincidentally, the villains' power seems to at least be implicitly based on the magnitude of their insecurity and commitment to maladaptive coping mechanisms.

Yeah the bad guys talk a good game but everything they do just makes the problem worse. "Oh I'm so cold" uses ice powers to freeze an orphanage. Everything Kufufu does is just toxic enabling. Etc.

Meanwhile Shy is trying to stop Tzveta at any cost and constantly risks her own life to do so. Spirit has rallied but she looked lost there for a while. Hopefully things will wrap up next episode.

I'm terrible, all I could think of during Spirits and Tzveta's last drink was that scene in gravity falls where the paper copy of dipper accidently "drinks" himself to death

I feel like this series should've been paced for two cours if it wasn't already. Almost half of this series is about Spirits despite it supposedly being about the titular character.

Maybe Shy is simply too shy to always be in the spotlight.

For real though this Spirits stuff dragged a bit. Not that individual moments were bad or whatever but I feel like we were at this drat orphanage for like a month now.

It does feel like we should be raring to go for the next arc, which is a lot more Shy focused, but weren't sitting here fearing a OPM2 happening.

It felt dragged out compared to manga yeah and it did feel like it stretched out cause they wanted to wrap the season up with it and not get into anything else

Feels like the first arc of a show designed to run for hundreds of eps but it's going to end in two

It was 4 eps right? So it was basically a month.

Last episode just kind of a wrapup and setup for season 2. But also, season 2 confirmed.

Considering the timing they must have been notified of the renewal in advance of the general public but how much in advance is unknown if it impacted their season 1 plans in any appreciable way. If it didn't the ending is kinda ballsy.

finished up the last two episodes. the resolution for the Pepesha arc stuck the landing imo, and i liked the build-up for season 2. the cameos of the other villains upcoming & seeing if they also were/are part of the other heroes' lives has me pretty hype.

i think overall it was a good first season. really liked the characters, the animation flourishes were cool, and i particularly liked it not dwelling on humiliating Shy and instead showing her incremental growth. i really hate cringe comedy based on a character just being different/awkward and that it didn't go that route was welcome. the Pepesha arc taking up nearly half the season made it feel pretty drawn-out though, especially when it apparently was quicker in the manga. also wished that most of the other heroes didn't just show up for a single scene before backing out aside from brief cameos, but that feels like a personal nitpick. think overall it's a 6.5/10 for me, bumping up to a 7/10 after reflecting that if i wasn't watching every week or every other week then the Pepesha arc wouldn't have felt so tiring. looking forward to S2!

I'm for sure on board with basically all that, symbolic. I'm very glad it's getting a season 2 because there's so much promise here and a lot of the season showed that, but it was weighed down by some pacing issues. Learning that the manga wasn't quite so bad and that the next arc or two in the manga are themselves better paced has me excited for the next season.

Just expanding a bit - I am so fkn on board with liking how they didn't go all in on humiliating Shy with cringe comedy. It felt like an unflinching yet sympathetic representation of someone with social anxiety trying to do well despite their challenges, neither downplaying the struggle nor mocking her for having them. I'm rewatching Bocchi rn and there's a lot of parallels there.

Pepsha arc felt like it was stretched an episode too long so the season wouldn't start another major arc before the end but it did hit all the big emotional beats. Plus it ended with Iko and Teru which is always welcome

Glad tha manga scans are picking back up plus I recommend getting the series itself. Up there among my favorite ongoing series
