Killers of the Flower Moon is the next film by Martin Scorcese, grandfather of Tiktok star Francesca Scorcese and well-known for his viral Twitter posts about Marvel movies. An adaptation of the 2017 book by David Grann, KotFM is a film about about a couple who gets wrapped up in the investigation of several murders of Osage people that have occurred on land recently discovered to have large deposits of oil. It is receiving every accolade you can imagine. The reviews are off the charts. It is three and a half hours long. Accept no substitutes. Special attention is being paid to the performances of Lily Gladstone, as a woman navigating what her Native American identity means to her husband and to her country, and of Leonardo DiCaprio, as a man who dates women with fully-developed prefrontal cortexes.

The film is currently available in limited release and will see a wide release at your local mall theater on October 20th. It was developed by Paramount and Apple Studios, which means if the idea of staying in one chair for four hours puts you off, it will likely be streaming on Apple TV+ by early 2024, so you can renew it for the first time since Severance ended.

What movies do I need to watch before this one?

I have been informed Martin Scorcese has a direct sightline to my computer chair and I don't feel like moving my home office.

Can I expect any coupons or discounts on tickets?

If you think about it, watching a four-hour movie is kind of like a BOGO.

What other Scorcese movies are worth watching?

It would take less time to list the bad ones really, but most agree his best is Goncharov.

Saw it on Saturday at the London Film Festival (introduced by Marty himself and Chief Standing Bear of the Osage Nation) and loved it. Despite being sat in the incredibly uncomfortable Royal Festival Hall fold-down seats, I was transfixed and it hadn't felt like 3.5 hours had passed by the time it finished.

Lily Gladstone is a lock for a best supporting actress nomination, and I'd put good money on her winning the statue itself - there's one moment in the film where she cries out in pain that brought tears to my eyes.

It looks fantastic and there's some great shots that I'm still thinking about, plus an appropriate use of sudden violence without being gratuitous. And the final scene is just perfect in how deliberately awful and critical it is, with a very unexpected cameo. Can't wait to watch it again.

Probably depends on your theatre - my local that had a 35mm print of Oppenheimer had inserted their own 10 minute intermission, though it was right after the nuclear blast, which defused the tension of the following gym hall scene.

Saw this recently — it doesn’t have an intermission, but it also feels so engrossing that you’ll probably not really feel like it’s missing one at all.

The format of the ending took me out a little bit but one would think it's obvious why Scorsese felt he had to do it this way.

Just back from this, incredible. The shot when they are descending into the valley to identify Anna's body and all the heads are turning stuck with me. And echoing what everyone else is saying about Lily Gladstone's performance - she has so much to do and doesn't put a note wrong.

My one complaint about the book is that it felt like the author put himself in the narrative too much. I'm expecting/hoping that's not the case here.

Film ending spoilers Scorsese literally appears but it is an incredibly effective and moving reading and after really grappling with Wes Anderson's obsession with framing devices it was kind of cathartic to see something so effortlessly _excellent_ and masterful

Nthing Gladstone's performance, but after quite a few recent phoned in roles De Niro was absolutely fantastic. The character is such a pastiche of the elements of his previous Scorsese roles on the broad beats (particularly Goodfellas, Casino and The Irishman) but it's so wholly realised to feel unique and just really, really loving good.

Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, why should we let them have ideas?

After seeing it at a 9pm showing last night, I was afraid I would fall asleep, but I was engrossed the entire 3.5 hrs. My morning after thoughts on the movie are that I think I have some issues with the narrative framing of the film I understand that the Osage were purely the victims of the white people, but the suffering of Mollie and the seeming lack of agency/stymieing of Osage agency was hard for me to watch, but I think the movie was masterful in telling the story and communicating the themes that Scorcese wanted to tell.

The scene where Ernest flips on the FBI with all the oil industry folks and his white family has really stuck with me, and the final reframing of the story as a post ww2 radio play really knocked the movie out of the park for me. The on purposely hypocritical reframing of the story as a piece of entertainment with Scorcese self inserting really got me and managed not to feel cute to me.

Sent kids to daycare and took time off to watch this in a theater. It’s fantastic but also very indulgent. Not in a bad way, but there’s lots of lingering shots and extra scenes provide tone and setting. The events are brutal and the callousness of the perpetrators is tough to see. You really get the sense that people didn’t care about hurting the Osage or other natives.

Culturally it feels like the film went all in with the language and costumes and depicting various ceremonies and traditions. And as others have said, then ending is quite special.

Gangs of NY has personal meaning to my relationship with my recently-deceased dad which is why it's my favorite Scorsese film in a way I don't think can or will be topped

Outside of that, I'm definitely willing to call this the best Scorsese film of the rest. Highly recommend catching in a theater like I did because being shellshocked in a packed theater that we didn't know how to react when the end credits not only came, but went, tops anything I could imagine feeling seeing that on an Apple TV+ screen that has the black credits showing my reflection on the monitor at the end of it all

A masterpiece in a year that's had a fair amount of those already. Count me among the group that think if you missed the ending, you really missed the film, period

Loved all the poo poo people (including myself at one point) had to say in the buildup to release about this being 3.5 hours, just for me to come out genuinely thinking there's not one scene I'd have cut

Worth the 3.5 hours. Felt meditative like The Irishman which is where I guess Scorcese is now.

Really impressed David Byrne was able to do Once In A Lifetime in Dhegiha Siouan. Real talk, I was intrigued that most of the film was not subtitled.

I saw on a small screen theater and kinda regret it cause the movie really feels cinematic, the images need a big rear end screen

I was looking at showings apparently due to run time every other showing of this at Hollywood theater is in the upstairs smaller screens. So glad I saw it on the larger screen, even though the power went out for like 2 min like 95% through the runtime of my screening!

When the film starts and there is both an excellent montage of the quick history of the Osage wealth and then a long dolly shot of tons of people in period garb getting off hopefully a real steam train with seemingly minimal or zero CGI… I knew that I was in good hands for the next almost 4 hours.

Someone said this had a meditative tone, and I think that’s correct. A comparison to another 3 hour film this year would be Oppenheimer (loved also). These films are almost opposite in pacing at times. Oppenheimer states with a breakneck speed first hour while Killers is happy to watch dancing or listening to the rain.

There’s more tension in the later half, but early on the film can deceptively draw you into its peace if you don’t know much about the history.

I think I liked it even more the second time around, loved Lily Gladstone's performance even more and could really pay attention to, as Scorcese has said, how expressive her face is even without saying anything. Seeing it on the IMAX screen I could also appreciate how beautiful it looks, not just in the production design but the framing and camera movements - when it moves, like with those boom shots, it really moves. Plus those couple of one, or almost one, long shots with two characters talking - we see it with Ernest trying to get John Ramsey to do a job, or Ernest letting Hale know the BI have arrived and are digging into the murders .

Plus that ending and coda again, perfect.

This movie was really amazing.

I knew the general shape of the situation but really had no understanding of the details... I loved how despite the obvious immediate revelations about Ernest being trash, I still kept holding out hope that he'd have more complexity or experience some serious inner turmoil. It was really amazing how brutally stupid he and the others were though, really successfully pulled the rug out for me there while still being completely believable.

The end bit with Scorsese himself reading Molly's obituary rang very hollow considering that he stuck her as a character in bed for the last hour and a half of the movie. Choosing to follow DiCaprio and DeNiro instead of the actual Osage characters was a head-scratching decision.

Nothing hollow about it. Ending was magnificent in contextualizing us watching tragedy for entertainment and reminding us these were real events that happens to and were commuted by real humans .

A companion movie from the Osage point of view would be interesting like with flags of our fathers/letters from iwo jima. But this one certainly treated the Osage people and culture with a lot of respect and put it all out there.

Yeah you can say “this is bad” but at the end of the day you still made the dang movie with De Niro joking about how you’re shooting people in the front not the back and playing it for laughs. Good movie I thought but the ending felt like, defensive in a way that put me off.

I thought it was kind of neat that the ultimate ending isn't totally dissimilar to other Scorsese crime movies and that no matter the time or place the takeaway is and always will be 'wealthy white men will never truly be punished for their sins' but he usually does it as a farce, not a tragedy

yeah i deliberately chose to go in blind and the combination of dicaprio's blunt idiocy and deniro's manipulation of him has you wondering, however briefly, "does this guy know what he's doing?" movie answers that pretty quickly after that though. kind of mirrors Mollie's perspective in that she knows ernest is after her money but still trusts him in spite of it. makes their final scene all the more cutting
