I've been buying legit copies of stuff from our local used record store and ripping them for Jellyfin (I keep the disks, but since we have a toddler I need to hide them, effectively). TNG is definitely a bit large even there though, and there's no guarantee it'll rip successfully (looking at you, weirdly shaped Simpsons S7 DVD box set that I need to return as I can't rip it). I did buy all the 'old' Star Trek movies for my collection, though, even Nemesis, as they were $1 each.

I just go to goku.sx rn, or any site like it if one gets shut down, and they all have pretty much all the shows and you just click to watch and stream like with Netflix or whatever. I'm not even sure what site I'd use to grab a show torrent these days, just always easier to stream. The only complaint I have is one of the file hosts is kinda bad so I have to switch to another one if they're the default.

Still better user experience than most of the streaming services I pay for, plus I often have to watch stuff I paid for through Goku because the legal paid sites are so poo poo.

If you don't mind watching away from home, you can always post up at an appliance store with TVs and watch whatever they have going on in there. Some places you might need to buy something to avoid getting kicked out to buy some extra time, but you can just return it later or get something you needed anyway.

Public trackers like that will sometimes generate nastygrams from your ISP (if you're on some popular new thing, the studio will know about the torrent and make the ISP snitch, as an IT person I had to send a company-wide email asking employees not to loving torrent Avengers Endgame on our office wifi), but those warnings are basically toilet paper until you get like 6, then they might shitcan your account. It takes some effort to pull that off. They've been known to send people emails for torrenting professional porn which is funny if it's a kid doing it and their mom gets an email from Xfinity about Anal Destroyers XVII. Then there's private trackers for all kinds of things, but they're all very strict Don't Talk About Fight Club etc, etc to keep studio agents from infiltrating.

LMAO you don't need a VPN to get to torrent search sites. You need the VPN to download a torrent without the MPAA seeing that you are downloading their poo poo.

Torrents are extremely public. It's simple to monitor stuff like the list of IP addresses downloaded Madame Web last week. They then look up which ISP owns 192.420.6.9, go to that ISP, and say "who was using that ISP on Thursday the 18th?" At which point there are 3 answers:

1. you have a major ISP like Comcast or Verizon, who says "It was Microplastics, who lives on 22 Butts St."
2. you have a small and cool ISP like Sonic who says "Do you have a subpoena?" and then turns around and sends you a letter saying "if you download anything else we'll kick you off"
3. you have a good VPN, who says "we have no idea who was using that IP on the 18th, we don't keep records".

Fun fact about Comcast. For years their Docsis 2.0 cable modems could be JTAG flashed to give free internet, by reprogramming them to the spoof the MAC address of someone else with an active account. Xfinity was falsely accusing and maybe even prosecuting thousands of people of downloading all kinds of illegal poo poo that other people did. Xfinity quietly patched it up with Docsis 3.0 apparently, but kept it hush-hush and never went after the hackers, so they wouldn't get exposed to all the legal retaliation. Very cool.

Yeah I'm sure they could infiltrate most private trackers too, they probably just figure anyone using those are savvy enough to either ignore or fight the validity of the citations, whereas public tracker users are loving stupid enough to say "I'm so sorry!! don't put me in jail!"

For on-topic, it seems very similar to Google. I think they're not wasting time nagging people who keep updating the ad blockers because they realize we'll stop at nothing. And they'll probably keep abusing the pushovers with increasingly more ads and nags. That's why I have such disdain for goons who admit they pay for premium.

There are also some other risks depending on where you are. In Finland and I think elsewhere in Europe, maybe sometimes the US too, there's a whole extortion business where will send you letters going "you've been pirating, send us 800€ or we sue". They probably will not sue, over here only one of these is an actual law company which does it once in a blue moon to try and make an example, and the others are cases like singular retired lawyers making a buck on the side who have never ever gone to court over this, but they will still keep bombarding you with menacing letters for years which is not great for your stress levels. What makes it extra scummy is that the legal penalties here are nowhere near as high as amounts they try to extort. They're trying to scare you with court costs.

Duck and Cover posted:

Yeah but the moment the effort level increases to monitor what's going on, it's far less likely to happen because it costs them money.

Yeah, in the US that's usually the BSA run by Adobe and Microsoft, they are shakedown thugs who target piracy of software, not movies/music: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_Alliance

They only go after other corporations. They tried to pick a fight with my startup and I told them to kiss my rear end. Goons were aghast, like "that's a company of almost entirely lawyers, don't gently caress with them" but I had my poo poo together with every PC that I gave to users fully inventoried including all installed software and keys. Adobe was auditing us for poo poo we paid for and I showed them the receipts, and they were like "that's not sufficient proof" and I'm like "gently caress you it is" and they're like "nuh uh". We got them to gently caress off but our lawyer and I probably used up half the billable hours ending their nuisance as the figure they were trying to extort us for.

edit: They even literally tried to audit our Adobe CC accounts, I'm like you stupid assholes, you can see they're subscriptions, they would cease working if we weren't current on them. It was really stupid like the BSA lawyers handed us off to an overseas support thing to audit us with, to save themselves money I guess but aggravate us more.

There really is a meaningful difference in the quality and quantity of what’s available on the private trackers versus the public, especially if you’re looking for anything that wasn’t released in the last few years. TorrentLeech is relatively easy to get in to, and it’s what TPB or Demonoid was like back in the day, but more so. The person upthread who mentioned seedboxes as the way to go is right: for like $5/month you’re set as well as a VPN, and you can trivially climb into the private trackers. I switched into that method last year, and it’s pretty sweet.

This probably depends greatly on where you live. I'm not an expert on how this works, but I would imagine copyright extortion companies can't trivially monitor what goes on in private trackers? If it takes some effort to get access they're not going to care because it's about making money and if someone has to put manual effort into it that cuts into the profit. Though by the same token, you're also probably safe by just using a VPN.

The vast majority of everything on torrents are posted on Usenet first, which is the same ~$5/month and people set up their Plex servers where all their friends can just type the names of things and the Plex server will fetch the best copy from Usenet automatically.

Yeah Sonarr can use bittorrent.

BitTorrent is like a gathering of Orks in the midst of a Waaagh! Each Ork brings their own bits and bobs of dakka and gubbins, and they toss them into a massive pile in the center of their camp. From this scrap heap, Meks and Weirdboyz cobble together makeshift weapons and contraptions, with each Ork grabbing whatever they need to join the fight. It's a chaotic but collaborative process, with every Ork contributing to the arsenal and everyone benefiting from the shared loot.

Now, Usenet is akin to a well-organized Grot-run workshop deep within the heart of an Ork stronghold. Inside, a cunning Runtherd oversees a meticulous inventory of all the teef, scrap, and shiny bitz collected by the Grots. When an Ork wants a new shoota or choppa, they place their order with the Runtherd, who then delegates the task to the Grots to gather the necessary materials and assemble the requested item. It's a structured and efficient system, ensuring that every Ork gets exactly what they need for battle.

So, BitTorrent is like the raucous gathering of Orks tossing scrap together to create weapons and gear for the Waaagh!, while Usenet is like the organized workshop where Grots diligently assemble custom-made weapons for their Ork overlords. Both approaches result in an arsenal of dakka, but they cater to different preferences — the rowdy and collaborative spirit of the Orks or the structured efficiency of Grot labor.

The other big one was what.cd, I liked it a lot better because it was actually a well organized and curated library of music you can browse as opposed to the kinda flat "list of torrents you search through" thing I remember waffles being. It was such an awesome thing to find out about as a teen used to slumming it on the pirate bay.The ratio requirements were kinda tough, but a few years before its demise they changed it so that long-term seeders were still rewarded even if they didn't get much actual upload, and that's pretty much the norm now.
